How To Grow Your Avocado Seeds the Right Way

Love this video Graft Man! I just finished up eating an amazing Pinkerton piece of fruit yesterday/today. Since Pinkerton is such an amazing variety (super small seed for the fruit size and delicious) I wanted to see if I could sprout it. I have never tried this but I do have 8 grafted avocado's in my backyard (all different species), one in ground and 7 in large containers and boxes with the intention of planting more in ground. Someday I will take on grafting to have some fun as well but first I'll start with trying to sprout/plant some seedlings! Thank-you for all the wonderful information you are posting.... you are contributing in a big way to my success as an avocado hobbyist! Chris

I have honestly found better results using soil to grow my rootstock. Those in water tended to be "leggy" and also were a bit shocked when transplanted, which meant a lag before I can graft. In soil (even plain river sand), they can handle the re-potting and are ready for grafting in no time

Great video AJ. I’ve been using Reed seedlings for years and my best grafts have been on those. I recently started growing Fuerte seeds on your suggestion. They are doing great. Going to graft on those soon. Thanks

G.M. preguntas- For the toothpick seeds in the water cup, do you keep inside in shade or outside in sun? How about when they begin to develop leaves (full sun)? How often do we change the water? Looking forward to your soil episode. This potting mix didn't look like the 100% Decomposed Granite from the previous videos. Thanks again for the content.

I have a Mexicola type (black, smooth skinned) that I call “405 Freeway”. It should be a very cold tolerant type, but I don’t have first hand experience with that because my area doesn’t get so cold

I have no formal training in this area. But to my understanding, multiple shoots coming out of a seed means that it’s polyembryonic and in other fruit, if it’s polyembryonic like in mango seeds as an example, then one of the stems that comes up is true to type. Another words, one of those probably is going to carry the same genes as the parent, a real Fuerte with seedling vigor.

I totally get your point, and it’s certainly possible, however it seems like all of these shoots are connected to one root system. With polyembryonic mangoes you can separate each of the shoots and see that they have their own individual root system. Not the case with the avocado

Avocado seeds are not polyembryonic like southeast Asian mango varieties. You do occasionally get multiple shoots, but they are not independent plants. Just let the shoots grow to the point you can identify the strongest and remove the others.

I've had some success with just leaving the pits in a shallow container of water (changed weekly) until the root barely sticks out of the seed, then immediately putting it in soil before it has time to grow much at all. I didn't notice any transplant shock, it also means you can basically just stick it in the top layer of the soil and not have to worry too much about the root system. My seedlings grown this way are still young though so I can't really vouch for the long term effects.

Attempted my 2nd graft today, felt better about 1st one than 2nd as thr scion was smaller than root I put it on. Didn't feel great about either wrap, so I put a zip tie for added measure 🤓

@@AJTheGraftMan I just cut thr zip ties today. How will I know if it was successful? On some of your videos it looks like it's growing through the wrap, but it doesn't look like that with mine. It still looks alive but nit growing through. It will be 30 days on September 6

@@PalAl11 some grafts take quite a while to grow. As long as your scion is still green, then it’s alive and kicking. I did an avocado graft that took 4 months to grow out and push leaves through the grafting tape.

Hi yes I have a few trees and seeds available. Yes those should give fruit someday, though some seedlings will never fruit. Others can make great fruit. It's a gamble.
