This is helpful. Now I can make a pencil case without the seam falling apart. Thank you.

Yes this way of sewing a seam will work on anything where you don't want the seam to pull open easily. The smaller the stitches the stronger the seam.

I use this stich when I hand sew dresses but I use stitches that are 1/16 of an inch. these stitches seem a bit large. however you have done a great job!

I dont understand how to start/finish. I have a string threaded, and knotted on both ends, pull it through but the knot typically doesnt catch, much less going back and forth, also, it's hard to tell for sure in the video because it's low resolution, but it looks like he's pulling 2 threads through at once?
@ChildOfAnAndroid

Essentially the knot wont catch, you have to catch it. Hold it in place whilst you create approximately 3-5 stitches over the top of each other, this holds it in place and you can now start the backstitch as shown here.

First stitch. "We are going to go forward about quarter of an inch". Proceeds 3/4 of an inch! 😂😆🤣

I can't stand messy looking stitches. I've taken to making a straight line on my fabric with a straight-edge (or ruler) and pen or pencil. Then I can always hit the line perfectly.

How come you only used a little bit of thread? You tied two ends together to make the knot right? How do you judge how much you'd need and what do you do if you didn't get enough thread the first try? I'm completely new to needle/thread crafting. I'm trying to make a shirt for a doll from 2 pieces of fabric

SourceLight it's easier to use only a small amount at a time because after each stitch you have to pull a lot of thread through, and depending on what thread it is, it can get wound up and knotted when pulling through. I am new to hand sewing as well and had the same question. I found out the hard way. If you don't end up having enough thread, you can always just tie some more to the end or end your stitch by knotting and starting a new line.
