My quarter horse gets this regularly. I also use the soft curry on him first, but actually found a product that clears it up quickly. It's called Equiderma Skin Lotion and the crud clears up after about 3 daily applications. It comes back every spring but I can stay on top of it.

My paint gelding gets this seems like every other year and some years worse than others. I use mane and tail shampoo on it scrubbing gently, rinse and then apply MTG with a bit of Tea Tree added to the oil mixture, apply while damp wiping away any excess. This has worked well for me for cannon crud, rain rot and scratches. I find it doesn’t come back as quickly and keeps him itch free for longer. A few days of treatment and it clears up. Afterwards, I do this every other week as a preventative if I think the weather is going to be really muggy as heat and humidity make it worse. My vet checks it from time to time during our shots visit to make sure there is no skin cancer developing.

This is one of those things that if you hadn't done a video on it I would have never known what it was. I find these videos useful. I like that you include your vet's recommended treatment. Dogs can get something similar often called "hairy feet" or paw pad hyperkeratosis. The dogs I've known also often tend to get it up on their carpal pad, the one by their dew claw. There can be other underlying causes, and those would need to be treated, but sometimes a dog just gets it. Often Omega fatty acids 3, 6, 9 in the diet can help, as well as removing the excess growth, and using a paw balm. I know horses are a different species, so treatment is different, but this video was fascinating. Thanks, Brandie!

So this seems different from "Scratches" or is the same thing? (mud Fever, Dew Poinsionisng, Greasy Heel...OMG there are so many names) I Like Coat Defense, so many uses for it! I also have that same silicone curry/scrubbie and it is my favorite go -to for many things, especially bathing! My gelding's two back white socks often get scratches at least once a year. I have learned to keep his pasterns/heels clipped short, but when its super muddy it is inevitable.
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Very different from scratches and it’s pretty common. I’ve only owned two horses who have it, but have seen it on a lot of other horses. It never truly goes away from my experience, but it’s easy to manage. Scratches on the other hand is absolutely horrible
@MrHorsepro
@MrHorsepro 4 жыл бұрын
Scratches, or equine pastern dermatitis (EPD), is not a disease but, rather, a cutaneous reaction pattern. Scratches can affect any breed but are prevalent in draft horses due to long pastern hair (feathers). It most commonly affects the rear aspect of the hind pasterns and especially non-pigmented skin. Without treatment, the lesions can spread to the front of the pastern and fetlock. Clinical signs vary, but initially, owners might notice edema (fluid swelling), redness, and scaling, rapidly progressing to oozing, hair matting, and crusting. If the cause is vasculitis (blood vessel wall inflammation), ulcers might form on the skin. The secondary bacterial infection is a common complication and can perpetuate the signs. In chronic cases, skin can thicken and fissure due to constant movement and flexion in this area. The lesions are often painful. Treatments After your veterinarian identifies the causative factors, it is time to pursue appropriate therapy. Here are some environmental changes you can make: 1. Avoid turning affected horses out in pastures with mud, water, or sand, which can worsen the condition. 2. Keep horses in clean, dry stalls during wet weather. 3. Do not turn horses out until the morning dew has dried. 4. If you suspect contact allergic dermatitis, try an alternate source of bedding that isn't treated or aromatic. 5. Clip heavy feathers over the pasterns to reduce moisture retention. 6. If you suspect PLV, avoid UV light exposure by stabling the horse during the day and/or wrapping the affected legs. 7. Clean affected skin immediately after exercise using an antiseptic shampoo.

That’s a great question and I probably should have discussed that. Maybe I’ll do a video on how to handle the horses hind legs. I will crawl around on the ground by my horses hind legs if needed, but there’s no way I’d let my kids do that. They are simply too young to read the horses and not aware enough to get out of the way of needed. If a kid or beginner had to do this (or myself with a horse I do not trust), I would recommend standing next to the horse and face forward, bend over at the waist to scrub the leg. Never kneel. When I’m working with a horse I don’t trust, the last place I want my head is in kick zone. When I bend over away from the leg, I’m more likely to get kicked in the rear end or leg and that’s much better than taking a blow to the head. Many people are taught to never go by the horses hind end, never kneel around a horse, never do this, never do that. Personally I think that’s totally unrealistic and we need to make adjustments to fit the situation. I teach my students HOW to be around a horses hind end and give examples of situations to help them make safe decisions.
