Due to an injury, our 7 week old foal, Manzer, could no longer put his head down to eat. We knew it was time for a foal feeder so we could elevate his grain and also keep his mother from eating it. In this video you'll see Manzer's progress and witness his mothers frustration.
If you enjoyed this video and would like to learn more about horses and real life in the barn, I encourage you to follow my journey with horsemanship. You can start by subscribing and make sure to ding that little 🔔 so you never miss a video. Thanks for watching!

Just wait until the mare learns to grip and lift the front of the feeder and then lets it snap back to the wall which throws the grain up to the front where she will snag it out with her tongue! Had these feeders all through the barn for my Arab foals for years. I swear the mares taught each other how to do the trick to get to the foal food!! Added another plate on the inside lower wall of the feeder which stopped the snapping and robbing through better attachment, but the feeders looked like they had been through a war! You are doing a great job with the foal.

So glad you found a solution to feeding the cutest little guy! I think Horses naturally graze on something throughout the day in the wild, so keeping his stomach from being empty too long hopefully will keep the ulcers healed. Yay Manzer and nice job Brandi! ❣🐎 Hope his back will be better sooner without all the pulling to try to reach his food. Is Nika still nursing? Is she genuinely extra hungry from making good mares milk....or is she just being a stinker ? Thank you for for sharing the journey ! ☺️💕🐎

Kathleen Drozdowski thank you! Nika has always been a chow hound with grain so I totally expected her to act this way. She also doesn’t like to give up so stay tuned for more of the foal Feeder saga, haha. Horses do like to spend most of their day grazing and that’s something I really love about the hay Chix nets. They horses are able to eat more naturally and the hay lasts a lot longer. They never run out of hay with the nets so feeding time is less stressful for them.

MICHELLE DICKERSON I use absorbine Ultrashield EX and it is the only thing I’ve found that makes a little bit of difference without causing chemical burns on their skin. Unless you live in our area, you really have no idea what we are dealing with. It’s hot, humid, and swampy, there isn’t a spray that exist that will keep the flies off the horses in our area. Absorbine at least gives them some relief. Luckily fly season is short in our area.
@LynneDemonQueen1
@LynneDemonQueen1 4 жыл бұрын
Have you tried citronella with dish soap and water mixture? Darn pesky flies react differently to different fly sprays in different regions. Piranha worked great in SoCal but not in Albuquerque, repel x worked best there, and only the citronella mixture helps any in Oklahoma.
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Lynne Rocco I have not. When I was a kid we made a concoction that our farrier recommended for when he would trim. The flies would be so bad that it made his job really difficult. I remember it had dish soap in it and one of the horses had a reaction to it and lost a bunch of hair on his legs. Makes me a little nervous to try it again especially since I have a few pinto horses with really sensitive skin.

If u dont want to expose so much feed at a time (mice will run off or contaminate any uneaten amount) u could put a sturdy container upside down in the bottom of it and put another sturdy container on top of that with one feeding amount of grains in the upper container. that way he could reach and eat the total one amount of grains in one feeding and not have the uneaten amount exposed to vermin.

Try "Creep feeding" instead. Foals can go under to a Safe place. The mother Needs food as well. She is thin and is nursing a big foal. She is obviously Hungry.
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Cathrin Gustafsson we don’t have an area set up to do that and don’t want to put up any new structures. What we are doing now is working very well for us. @@VersatileHorsemanship We do it the easy way. Nail a wood piece high enough for the foal to get under to its food but too low for the mare. OK its a difference in opinions. I don't want to see the ribs. If mummy gets more food the foal won't need any extra than milk. Both are beautiful.
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Cathrin Gustafsson my mare has a huge barrel and her ribs have always shown. It’s just the way she’s built. Did you see that massive belly? She needs some serious exercise and a cut back in calories. With the way our stalls doors are and how frequently the stalls are used by other horses, we can’t simply put a board across. That would certainly be an easy fix, just not an option for our current set up. He is still nursing often and they have unlimited hay.
@cathringustafsson2426
@cathringustafsson2426 4 жыл бұрын
@@VersatileHorsemanship Less calories? The belly is huge since she has carried at least one foal and if she only gets hay it does not get smaller. Exercise? On those hooves? She was HUNGRY and they need alot of concentrated grains while nursing . Our really good pasture. The foal is fine and takes all nutrients from the mother. It doesn't seem to need any extra at this time.
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Cathrin Gustafsson lol, what’s wrong with her hooves? Yes she needs exercise, just like every mama who has ever carried a baby and needed to get their body back in shape. She does get grain, but doesn’t need as much as she was getting the first few months of nursing.

Why can't u do more for flies? Put cedar chips down at least where they eat..
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Mae Neisler the flies are normal for our climate. It’s hot, humid, and swampy. Putting down cedar chips won’t do a darn think besides make a wet mess in the paddocks. I do everything I can to keep the flies under control. It’s like this for everyone in our area.

I see others use cedar chips and they do not make a mess . You really know it all huh? Not so much
@VersatileHorsemanship
@VersatileHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Mae Neisler I absolutely do not claim to “know it all”, I simply have dedicated my entire life to caring for horses and think I have more experience than some other folks who just watch what others do. I strive to improve my Horsemanship DAILY and I do have almost 4 decades of my own personal experience taking care of horses. I do use cedar shavings which does nothing for the flies in a paddock. It can help in a stall because it can be easily cleaned up after absorbing wetness from the solid surface. At my barn (which you have never been to nor do you know my climate) the ground gets very wet. Cedar shavings would absorb the water and turn into a soupy mess that can harbor mold and fungus. Mushrooms will grow on any type of wood shavings. Thank you for the suggestion, but your recommendation doesn’t work for me. Please refrain from leaving negative or rude comments on my channel, I will not tolerate it and the next time you will be blocked.
