He knew it was gonna be a losing battle if he tried to fight it, so he gave Debra what she wanted he took “responsibility”. And Debra didn’t really care about “improving” their marriage, she just wanted someone on her side and tell Ray to stop being lazy, not realizing counseling isn’t one sided.

They were both a bit devious here. Ray was obviously performing for the therapist. And Debra, instead of calling him out on it, should have just pretended to believe him so that she could get him to change his behavior regarding responsibility. I think they both need to take a chill pill and have some of Debra's famous lemon chicken!

It's so interesting that depending on their point of view, people will side with either Debra or Ray. Some say Debra is a nagging, snobbish, uptight yell machine while other say Ray is an insensitive, selfish idiot who can't taking anything seriously. Personally I think they both have issues and neither of them is always right, so in that respect, their relationship is pretty relatable.

And even going to counseling it shows their flaws. Ray doesn’t want to go because he doesn’t want to face the deeper issues in their marriage (hilariously revealed later😂). Debra for her part doesn’t really care about “improving” their marriage she just wants someone to tell Ray to stop being lazy not realizing it takes work from both parties, and she can’t play the martyr like she usually does.

I feel like Ray takes Debra 4 granted and will take his mothers side over his wife all the time. Everything is a joke to him. Frank and Robert will always have Debra’s back when it comes down to it.

I think the way Debra constantly physically hits Ray and I know people think it’s funny but it’s serious if it’s wrong for a man to hit a woman it’s equally as wrong for a woman to hit a man.!It also leads to people like Peggy Mussolini who also attacked Raymond physically this should’ve been addressed a long time ago!

Debra, to get her way, gets Ray to go to Female Marriage Counselor. Its a set up, women usually get sympathy at these sessions. Husbands end up losers. Hence, Debra starts off right away with fake crying. Ray gets what's going on and reverses the whole psychology of the counseling session. Brilliantly written, and well acted by all. And Very Funny.
