In the Philippines, hanging clothes to dry is actually the norm. It's rare for a household to have a dryer. We actually rely for the sunshine to dry our clothes. This tip actually gives me an idea on how to hang clothes better. Thanks

Same in Scotland despite our rubbish rainy weather, if its a dry day the washings out! . Using a dryer is really not enviromentally friendly waste of electricity . I only use mine if its raining and usually just towels and bedding . Also dryers ruin your clothes much quicker. Nothing better than wind dried clothes - I always smile on a windy dry day when I can get a washing out as it rarely needs ironed either when I bring it back in. Also keeps the smell of the fabric softener longer if it's air dried.

Some folks think there's no rhyme or reason to hanging laundry on a clothesline but there IS. Things dry better, quicker , softer & w/ less wrinkling if hung certain ways. I've hung laundry outdoors most of past 47 yrs. Live & learn. I prefer not to overlap & use 1 clothespin unless both pieces are very thin material. I turn clothing wrong side out to prevent fading. I hang sox by toe, not folding over line so entire toe gets sanitizing sun. ..turned inside out if there's an issue of toe fungus because sun will kill it. Also, everything lasts a lot longer if line-dried. Dryers pull fabric apart...that's what the lint is in the lint catcher.

I agree... they do have less wrinkles when line dried. On T-shirts, I will machine dry them once and awhile, to get rid of lint (not so often). My grandma never used an electric dryer until the day she died. Thanks Pat... much love! Mike

It's the way in Scotland dryer only used for rainy days... Fabric softer smell lasts longer too. So much more environmentally friendly. We have rotary driers mostly especially in small gardens so you can get loads out and it spins in the wind. Very rarely need to iron if the wind is enough.

Jill-I always hated using a clothesline because my clothes came out stiff and wrinkled but I always wanted to use mine. I watched your video this morning and decided to give it a try as today was laundry day. Wow! My clothes dried so fast and no stiffness or wrinkles. Sold! I will be using my line as long as the weather holds. I love doing laundry now!!!! Thank you, thank you thank you!!!!

I add one cup plain vinegar to the rinse cycle and this removes any soap residue which results in stiff clothes when line dried. Also snap shake items before putting on the clothesline which results in softer towels etc. Also turn all dark items inside out so they dont bleach in the sun.

I really like this channel. I’d like to share an economical and eco friendly way to scent your clothes in the drawer. Marshall’s sells wool dryer walls that are not as noisy as tennis balls and are fluffier. Tap some essential oils on the wool about 5 drops per ball. You’ll find you will NEVER need dryer sheets again

When we were growing up my mom would say, "no, don't use that dryer, it cost too much". She taught us how to hang clothes. Your vid brings back memories... she always told us to air fluff them first, etc., exactly how you're doing. I still use the line, especially in the summers in Arizona. Jeans will even dry quick here!!! People laugh at me for using a line. Why not?! Thanks Jo!! Much love!

My sister moved to Florida a couple of years ago, and when I visited her, we would go look at new housing subdivisions being built and I would say, this would be a good place for a clothesline, and she'd go, silly, you can't use clotheslines in Florida, they're banned!!! WHAT!!!!!!!!!! I would think Florida would be the perfect place for clotheslines and since millions of people live there with millions and millions more moving there, I would think clothesline would be perfect for lowering the electric bills and the usage of it.

Yes, gravity will pull the water down. She is saying that if you put the heaviest part of the garment at the bottom, the weight of it, as the water is pulled down by that gravity, will help smooth the fabric, thereby taking out the wrinkles. That's not a waste of time or effort at all. It's a timing-saving tip that keeps a person from having to iron the clothes that are hung that way. :)

You hang jeans the way we do. My husband taught me when we got married. I love your tip about holding a whole stack of small items in your hand at one time. I have nowhere in my home for clothes baskets to be when not in use, so I usually take a stack of heavy towels out to the line, flop them over, then go back and straighten them. And sometimes I set the wooden clothes rack in the bathtub and hang socks or other small items on it, then I don't have to pin them. However, if I hang wet things in the bathroom, I run the bathroom fan because we have to be careful about too much humidity in the house. I also hang shirts on hangers, then hang them outside or on the shower rod. Then when they're dry, they can go right in the closet. My husband fixed some wires so that the plastic hangers have a place to hang outside without getting blown away.
@ProudKansan08

I didn't have a clothesline, I had a chain link fence, so, what I did, was hang everything I could on hangers and when the shirts were dried, hang them up, or in the case of my late husband's white tee shirts, I'd fold them up and put them up. Other stuff like sheets, towels and blankets would get thrown over the fence and clothespinned down if it was really windy outside. I think if i had a clothesline, I'd continue hanging the shirts on the line hung on hangers and that way, I can just hang them up when they're dried. I thought I was the only one who did that. LOL!!

All very good, however, when hanging t-shirts or items like this - don't fold over the line and peg, instead, just peg one side of the garment as this allows the t-shirt to "open" and allow the air to also circulate inside the garment. So instead of having the front and back of the garment stuck together to dry, when they are separated they dry as 2 thinner pieces of cloth and therefore dry faster. Same goes for trousers, when pinning the legs, just pin one side of each leg to allow the leg itself to have air circulation.

A pulley-type clothesline saves a lot of labor because you can stand in one place, instead of having to push/drag the laundry basket along as you move down the line. But, for some reason, they're not too common except in the Northeast.

My clothesline space is limited, as I don't want to string a lot of clothesline everywhere. So, I use thick plastic hangers and hangers with built-in clips to hang everything but towels and bed linen, which I take to the laundromat. I find that I can get three loads of wash on a line about 15' long using hangers. Without the hangers, I could maybe get one load on. I clip the top of the hanger to the line so the hanger won't blow off. Works like a charm. Someone said you can double the hanger with each facing the opposite way to prevent the wind from taking it, too. Seems to work.

Before my old Maytag died on me a couple of years ago, the clothes coming out of the washer were hardly wrinkled. If it was a particularly windy day, the wind blew the what there were wrinkles out. I didn't have a clothesline, so I hung stuff up on hangers and hung them on the fence. I know, ghetto, but, I was thinking outside the box. A year before my husband died, he did finally hang a rope across some poles and that was my line, but, I still used the fence for the most of the stuff. My new Maytag HE wrinkles the crap out of the clothes, but, when I get a clothesline sometime, I'm going to follow your directions about putting clothes in the dryer for 5 minutes. Everyone I knew, including my Mom, would just take the clothes out of the washer and go hang them. This might help get rid of the wrinkles my washer does to my clothes. Thanks for the tips. Just think, everyone I know, including me, have been doing this wrong!!! EYE OPENER!!!

Yes mom taught me same tricks. vinegar rinse, snap as you put in basket. exactly how I hang clothes, except shocks buy the toes. Oh the house smells so fresh and clean when you put them away. Do the same ting in winter. Have a chinese laundry rack and an umbrella dryer. Bought for camping to hang swimsuits and towels but comes in so handy in the winter. Also works just blowing a fan on the cloths dry by morning.

There is definitely technique to hanging clothes! (I say this from the experience of exclusively line drying) So glad to see what other do! I've found that on extra windy days it helps to push the clip down on the line as far as it will go, gives tighter pinch, making it less likely to be blown off. I also find it helpful to kinda string what clothes I can, on my arm (I know, sounds weird). Through the neck and torso of a T-shirt, or down the leg of shorts, etc., keeps both hands free! Peace!

How do you stop your clothes from blowing over the line though? I'll have them clipped on the top like your supposed to and the bottom will flip over on those windy days. And then it leaves a mark.

All good advice. I wait until I am outside to give my clothes a little shake to keep from getting lint on the floor. Also I use a few more pins than she does. Like in the middle of towels and tshirts so the sides may not be pointy. And I offset the fold in the sheets so they dry even faster. But wait until you bring the clothes in to flush in the dryer and only if its necessary. Thats the whole point of using the clothes line.

I noticed you use wood pegs. I prefer plastic as they never stain the whites. Also you have a multi line. What if you have only one line and need to save space. criss-cross the t-shirts to save on space. Also hanging fitted sheets, the elastic corners hanging down catch debris such as leaf and maple keys.

Great tips & I do most of your suggestions after a lifetime of hanging out laundry on our clothesline. We don't own a drier as they're too costly here & we mostly have great drying weather. One tip that works well for us (as we get a lot of leaves falling from the neighbour's trees) is to fold the fitted sheet in half over the line & tuck the elastic curves into the centre so they don't catch any leaves in the cups they create! 🥰 Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
