My ninth grade social studies teacher taught us the US flag code of conduct. I later on, told my mom about it during my first year in college, and she relayed it to our local Buddhist temple, because they've been flying flags in the wrong way for several decades.

Thank you! Strong winds blew our flag down. Luckily, it did NOT hit the ground. It was resting across the stair railing so now I'm wanting to get it remounted with a sturdier bracket. The plastic bracket did not stand up to the 50+ mph winds. The solid wooden pole did though. I just ordered an aluminum bracket to replace it. I wanted to make sure we were following the flag code before we move it to the less windy side of the house.

I’ve never installed a flag before, I really want to show pride and support in my country with all the craziness so I wanted to be sure I did so properly respecting the flag and our vets! I have metal siding, looks kind of similar to the ie, I wonder if I can find a box like that to install to the house but for now I found a small flag kit I can join to my package box out front where it’ll be safe so anyways thank you on the etiquette

When using the surface mounting block like shown, is there anything specific you need to be aware of when attaching to vinyl siding? Do you have to put caulking on the back?

I would run a beed across the top and sides and try to get it into stud so it doesn't try to flex back and forth in high winds

This was all well and good, but the wind where I live just YANKS the entire FLAG HOLDER plus all the long screws RIGHT out of the 4 by 4 tall post I use off my front porch. After three attempts to secure the holder with screws, I haven't rehung my flag. I'm about one of two of us on our street who still hangs our flag out. I wonder if gluing the nails in would keep the metal holder from being snatched away by the wind. My flag is very large with a yellow fringe. I angle the holder to fly the flag at a "V" angle rather than square out of the holder.

Which takes longer to do, half mast or full mast? Half mast. To properly do half mast the flag is supposed to be raised then lowered as a sign of respect.

Nothing looks better on/in front of a house than Old Glory waving in the wind. We have a 20ft aluminum pole with a 4x6 flag on it. We've tried just about every brand of flag available and out here in coastal CA we are lucky to get 1 year before it has to be replace. The wind and UV rays are brutal on flags. Btw, I believe it is illegal in California(like most things are) to burn the non cotton flags. You can also take it to your local VFW post and they will take care of disposal.

Apologies, I have not done this before. I have vinyl siding, what do I need to find to make sure that block does not fall down? They picked any old spot on that wall but do I need to find a stud behind the vinyl? Or is this so light the vinyl can support it fine?

Stud is great if there happens to be one where you want to hang your flag. Chances are there might not be. There is wooden sheathing that covers all the studs when your home was constructed. That's what they were supposedly drilling into. You can't miss it. Mount your flag exactly where you want it this way.

Just look up Congressionally passed 36 USCode 176. It's all there. What you're not supposed to do: Display the flag horizontally, like they do when they unfurl a flag at the start of sporting events. Display the flag on an athletic uniform. Use the likeness of the flag for marketing purposes, like the NFL does or USAA insurance, as two examples.

Nathan, I thought flags were not suppose to be dipped when hanging on the side of the house or building? I've always seen them on a flagpole standing straight up. I wouldn't feel comfortable installing a flag like this video displays hanging on the side of the house and dipped. What do you think?

Dipped and hanging are two different actions. When marching, the US Flag is never dipped. When hanging at an angle as shown in this clip, quite according to code. More here, although it’s missing all of the code. www.usa.gov/flag
