Wow how amazing. You should store some of it in the freezer for early spring brood rearing. Pollen powder is expensive and hard to find good quality. The stuff you have is free and super high quality!

Me too. I buy pollen for my allergies.i just started my own hives and wondered how I can do this without harming my bees. I think I'll hold off until my hives are stronger but I'm glad to know you can harvest the pollen without harming the bees.

I LOVE this because my big concern with pollen harvesting is taking it away from me bees because they do need it to thrive. I enjoy the benefits of pollen, but I fear most bee keepers aren't harvesting ethically.

I have been taking a teaspoon of bee pollen disolved in water every day to successfully cure my hay fever allergies in spring time. By taking bee pollen orally you desensitize yourself to pollen and therefore eventually are not allergic to it anymore. If you never eaten bees pollen before, I suggest you start slowly with one or two granules every four hours, and gradually increase the amount of pollen.

I always found pollen traps "neat",,,, but really need to bee cautious about derth and end of season stores. Honey is their carbohydrate, but pollen is their protein... leaving the trap on too long is easy way to starve a hive if not careful ... Great video ! Best of luck

Just be careful with that particular trap. I found the same thing happening, and while the bees may choose which entrance, it does not mean that enough bees will choose the non-collecting path. If you are collecting a ton of pollen without the tubes in, they still may not be getting enough. I found that placing a strip of 3/4 wood across the pollen collecting slit and forcing them through the 4 holes will ensure they collect enough for themselves. Like you, I never want to be greedy, but if they produce that much pollen without being forced into either entrance, you still might be unintentionally taking too much.

To deter the beetle life cycle you can pour 1 part vinegar to 1 part salt. It will help the beetle larvae from going underground beehive and grass from growing. If you have chickens, they'll eat the larvae.

Hi J&J, How do you store pollen? Do you have to refrigerate/freeze it immediately upon extraction? I’m in a temperate climate where humidity is high therefore the pollen has a wet feeling to it. Should I sun-dry it before bagging and freezing it? What is the shelf life for raw pollen? Appreciate your take on this.

So just to expand on the last comment. When it comes to allergies and why we have them, that's a million dollar question. My personal theiry based on research over the years is a weak immune system. There are studies that connect both ingesting bee pollen and honey (from your area) helps to build your immune system and makes allergies lesser or in some cases, non- existant. So family don't have any oroblems with allergies but my husband has intense seasonal allergies. We just started eating a teaspoon of honey a day. We shall see the benefits! I'll say though, it's the easiest medicine to get a kid lol. :)
