It's funny here in North Dakota the clay is so heavy you need to wet the soil to get the onions out or it's like their imbedded in brick. One thing I've always done is there are always a few little onions you miss; they disappear in the soil for the winter and reemerge in the spring. They're no good for harvesting since they immediately bloat so I just move them into small clumps around the garden and they make great little flowering pollinator attractors. The new format is a great addition.
@niallgardens Жыл бұрын
What a lovely suggestion! And isn't it nice to be able to use something for a positive outcome like pollinators

Great video Niall! I love seeing bits and pieces of your garden! Don't worry about the shallots! I also had a failure where I left my garlic in the ground too long and the bulbs split so wouldn't store very well! All part of the learning!

Thanks 👍 Really glad you enjoyed it! (and glad that I'm in good company with the occasional crop failure!)

Nice harvest Niall, fine size onions and garlic. Re shallots, a shame, but one wins some ,and lose some. As you say that bed was a success. Nice calm video, and did enjoy the escape from the rain 😂😂. We are having very weird weather this summer sadly. Have a lively Sunday. Thanks for sharing.
@niallgardens Жыл бұрын
Thanks Lorraine! How are you? This truly is a tough summer isn't it? Some of my plants, like my sweetcorn, were absolutely ruined by the mix of hot weather and wind, then the battering of rain and wind. Poor things!
@LorraineG123 Жыл бұрын
@niallgardens awh that's a shame Nisll. Yes simmer good for some produce and not so much for others. Blight hit all my potatoes.9 beds and more containers gone. Rescued but all small. On other hand my flower areas have had a party in this weather, I'm thrilled.

Good morning Niall, hope you're all well. Onions looking good. 🧄,Oh nooo the rain,again 😮 I used to grow Onions but the cats did their business in between so had to stop,used to tie them up and they lasted all winter in the shed. My garden looking very colourful now the bedding plants are flowering,I've got my 1st sunflower out lovely red centre golden yellow outer petals very pretty. We've had very heavy rain and storms on and off since last saturday,had very gusty winds too, have to keep pushing the sunflowers stakes in the ground, pesky yellow shelled small snails🐌 climbing up the plants too derrr!! Sunshine today but cloudy and rain they say later, not cold though. Have to go now get ready for church, busy day today. Thanks for sharing,take care,happy gardening see you next time,😊

Great video Niall. I got my first allotment this year and everything is on trial and error basis as I’ve never grown veg before, only flowers, but I’ve got to say I’m completely hooked. I’ve had a few successes so far with my potatoes, beetroot and my onions are doing well. I can’t wait to start properly for next year. Glad you talked about the onion that bolted as I have one and didn’t know what to do with it. Thanks Niall and I look forward to your next video. Deb

Here in Japan, the onion harvest is already in and as you drive through the villages there are huge bunches of onions hanging under the roof eaves to cure. Now it’s around that time to get carrots planted. Then the potatoes need to be harvested.

That sounds like such an amazing sight! I'd love to see that!

Lovely alliums! I’m enjoying my first year on my allotment and it’s very different to garden growing. My onions got mildew which is a common problem on plots. But they were still the biggest I’ve ever grown so I’ve cut off the leaves straight after harvesting and hoping they will store. The learn from next year is to try a disease resistant variety which i now know is vital with allotments. I’ll grow from seed too!

It's a horrible summer for growers especially in my garden my onions are poor my flowers are poor and my sweet corn and wild flowers are almost flattened by the wind and rain but we can't get angry just start again with a big 😁 Irish summer ⛱️
@niallgardens Жыл бұрын
It really is a shocking summer. My sweetcorn went into the ground an immediate got hammered by those weeks of hot weather coupled with that dry wind. Then battered by the rain and storms! They are very sorry looking!

That’s a grand harvest of onions and garlic and if you can get them dried off you’ll be enjoying them for months to come. The new greenhouse will be a great advantage for that with this miserable weather continuing. Well done. Pity about the shallots but you can’t win ‘em all! Have you any plans for that bed once it’s cleared? Maybe you could line out some biennials or plant some green manure?
@niallgardens Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The next step for that bed is a few rows of salad leaves, radishes, spinach, etc... that will give me another quick crop of leafy things for the late summer / autumn

Great onions! I find I have better luck when I start my shallots from seed. I live near Chicago and it was a hard go with the shallots. I had more problems with losing starts after transplanting then any other year. They also took their sweet time getting going. But it’s looking good for a nice harvest (red conservor a tried and true for me and zebrune new variety this year).
@niallgardens Жыл бұрын
That's interesting that you have better shallot luck with seeds.... it might be something I try in that case since I've always used sets. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Niall: Love the video (as always) but I would really appreciate it if you would give us some feedback as to what to do once various plants go-over. For instance, my lilies are starting to die back and I'd like to know how long you suggest we keep the stocks (which look quite nice), when can we plant the bulbs from the pots into the ground once they've finished for this season. Thank you very much. DA

Should you take out all of the infected shallot parts or is it ok to leave it in the soil to decompose? Loved the video! Feels like we're there!

I think it's probably ok to leave them as I don't think it's a major disease issue in this case. Hope this helps!

I think you still can harvest them. Though you'll probably find they don't store well. But they're certainly still edible
