When mommy duck's not around when they hatch, the others will take the first hatched as their mommy.. Same with my clutch..now theyre all grown up..it was both exhausting and fun raising all 5 of them

As a duck rescuer (over the tassie in NZ) its sad your local wildlife rescue told you to crack the eggs, as studies have sown they can suffer and feel pain from 7 days into incubation and whoever told you that had no idea how far along they were. Also to anyone considering whether to rescue eggs, if you can be certain a duck has already been on them for a while (at least q few days here she is sitting in the eggs most the day) incubating them, id not wait 24 hrs to take, as they could die, maybe give it 5--10 hrs dep on weather. Having said that, be aware ducks dont start incubating eggs till all are laid, so what they do is go to their nest each day, lay and egg, then head off and come back the next day, till they have anything from 10-20+ eggs (but usually, 12 -16 or so for wild mallards). Then they start to sit. And I have noticed my domestic ducks and wild rescue ducks will both often start to sit for a day and get off and leave the nest for 12-24 hrs, the get back on, in the first day or two, before they start sitting seriously, but the eggs still hatch ok. Once they are sitting, they usually only leave the nest a couple of times a day for 10-30 mins, an hr tops, depending on how far they are travelling to find some food and water). Domestic ducks can never be released into the wild and expected to care for themselves, regardless of how they are raised. Their inability to fly means they will be unable to escape predators or find food and water sources if food/water in the immediate area isn't suitable. Wild flying ducks, pretty much instinctively know how to find food and do what they need to do to survive, as long as they are raised with at least one other duckling as a sibling (otherwise they can imprint on you, the human and not even realise they are a duck!). I still prefer to soft release any animal though which means release it with a shelter which u leave there, and put food there every few days. I would never, ever release a duck which could not fly into the wild though, at any age.. Anyway, well done Henry on looking after these little ones and taking the time not just to hatch them but to learn how to care for them. It's amazing how many people have ducks and know not even the basic about caring for them, which is a pity because they are fascinating intelligent creatures and well worth learning about. I hope like me you have found the rewards when the cute lil buggers hatch, out weigh all the time and effort spent looking after them. You should consider becoming a duck rescuer/rehabber in your spare time, often bird rescue centres need people to raise ducklings over spring, which can then be released, which gives you a great experience without a long term commitment.

To anyone who thought of hatching and raising ducklings, my advice is go for it..but at least do basic researches on the web, how to operate the incubator and eggs, what to do and not do. Its not a one week past time hobby.. Needs some serious dedication and passion for it. If you ever think you may neglect or give up on them sometimes later, better not to hatch them

I've got a couple of questions. 1: What purpose does rotating the eggs serve, and 2: Is the rotation schedule done 24 house a day or would a human surrogate parent get a chance at an 8 hour snooze?

The most important thing with baby bird is to keep them warm and dry and if they start looking weak or sick or closing their eyes and following their head they need sugar water to get some energy and I found that Ducks really like watermelon and it works well for putting them back up. If they won’t eat anything you need to use a little eyedropper and put it in the corner of the mouth until they open up and drink it but also if he gets on them he got to dry them off because they can’t die of hypothermia very fast

Good job I’m in the same situation still having this baby duckling I took him to the wildlife place that would re-introducing me to the wild and let him go on this nature preserve but they only had two equal ducklings there in mine would’ve had to go into a glass incubator all by himself with a bright light shining on them all night so I brought him back home and I’m bonding with him and teaching him things and feeding him much better food than he would’ve gotten there at least more variety LOL I’m going to take him there but I’m waiting till they have more baby ducks that are his age so he can have some friends

Oh my gosh my baby looks like your six hour old babies exactly I know he’s at least three days old but I thought thought he was older than that geez! poor little baby! Mine Is a pretty good swimmer he already was when I got him out from the pond but another thing to note for people watching is that they don’t have their regular feathers so they’re basically like a pillow and get drenched and Kendra and easily so they need to be really really dry when they come out and really really warm like warmer than humans like 103 I think is what Ducks temperature is so if they’re shaking make sure they get warmed up as they will die very very fast!I learned this and also in the wild the mama put oil on their feathers for them so that’s why they can do it sooner
