Get the Cassin bag: bit.ly/2s5xbXw
On today's Gear Show we take a look at the Cassin Torre 70 haul bag. This bag combines a tough, waterproof shell with loads of storage space and is packed with features. We found expert Dave Searle to take us through some hauling techniques for when you're up on a big wall.

What are your thoughts on attaching the carabiner to a piece of thin cord which is attached to your harness, so if something happens and the haul bag somehow comes off an anchor you dont get pulled off the wall, the piece of string just breaks and the haul bag goes to the bottom.
@mitchellbaker4806
@mitchellbaker4806 Жыл бұрын
Seems like increasing the risk of dropping the haul bag from the cord failing. One extra step would be before he clipped it from his harness to clip onto the anchor, first pull through that much plus a bit more length and clove hitch it off to your harness (on a rated point, not a gear loop). Then undo the clove hitch once you've secured the main carabiner to the anchor. No risk of dropping then.

The handles are diff lengths to keep the bag from catching when hauling it...

They should show different hauling methods like the 2-1 ratchet or the 3-1 because the 1-1 method that they showed is terrible for heavy loads.

Can you guys make a video about the different types of climbing outside, I am currently trying to make the jump from gym to crag but all of the gear and vocabulary just seems so overwhelming so a general basics video would be perfect. Thanks.

May i suggest to take a couple of lessons from an instructor and/or exit with someone who already goes on crags?

SeraphinoII, Thanks for the suggestion I’ll try and make it happen however I still believe such a video would be a good resource for climbers trying to make the transition, that being said I didn’t do a thorough check to see if they have already made one and it may already exists

Google "Gym to Crag". But in addition to your equipent for the gym, you need 1) a helmet and b) a partner with a rope and enough quickdraws. That's all for sport climbing outside. A topo, where you can see where the routes are, how long and what grade would be nice. The Tops are quite different from crag to crag or even from route to route. If you are lucky, there are 1 or 2 steel carabiners already in place. Or a pigtail. If not, there is a ring made of steel. Then you have to do a bit of work, but don't worry, it isn't much. Take 2 Quickdraws and connect the rope loop of your harnes (= yourself) to the metal ring. The belayer can now give rope. Pull up some rope, put all 2 strands trough the metal ring and back to you. There you make a figure of eight "on a bite" into the rope and clip the knot into your harness. One locking carabiner or 2 straight gate carabiners will do (when i forget to put a screwgate on my harness and the top is a metal ring, i just use 2 carabiners from my quickdraws i have left on my harness). Then you are safe, because the rope runs from the belayer, through the metal ring and is clipped into the rope loop on your harness. Double check everything, since your life depends on it! Now you can scream "take" to your belayer. The 2 quickdraws connecting you to the metal ring are now not loeaded anymore. Take those and put them on your harness. Then the belayer can lower you. If he or she isn't climbing the same route, don't forget to take every quickdraw with you when lowering. ... Man, that was long to descripe in words, just watch a couple of videos, or let somebody show this to you. If you see it, you instantly understand and is clear. There are several variations to this, for example not using 2 quickdraws, instead a sling which you prepare before starting to climb up. Or not take the double starnd of rope through the metal ring, instead pull rope up, make a knot, clip this knot to your harness (it is just that if you let go of the rope, it doesn't fall down). Then untie the rope from yu, feed it through the metal ring and tie into your harness again. etc.

Seems like a really exhausting way to pull a haul bag. Looks like it was all in his arms without any 2 to 1 or anything. I guess that would work for a light bag, but for much heavier wouldn’t you want to do it another way? I’ve never climbed a big wall so what do you more seasoned trad dads and dadettes think?
@EverettWilson
@EverettWilson 5 жыл бұрын
He was pulling with his arms because the bag was super light. 2:1 is beyond the scope of a 10 minute haul bag review video, and 1:1 gets a lot of people quite far.
@LHPteam
@LHPteam 5 жыл бұрын
@@EverettWilson yup, 1:1 is usually ok for any load up to the own bodyweight as you can add an ascender to pull yourself down the haul line. 2:1 is tedious and any distance you lower yourself down, the haulbag only goes up half that distance. Takes forever and is hard while doing so if there is no good ledge to stand on as in the video.

On a big wall you should always back up your progress capture, by attaching a draw to master point and attaching the other end in to the rope, right next to the hauling device.
@dandaman111188
@dandaman111188 5 жыл бұрын
in his setup isn't it essentially already backed up by the jumar?
@benjohnson5517
@benjohnson5517 5 жыл бұрын
No, because you would be shock loading the person connected to the ascender. The draw would be in place of the hauling device if it broke, and the capture would be your ascender.
