A smart old man once told me, plant different things together, it confuses the bugs. If you plant a row of just spinach, bugs that like it will flock to it. If its hidden between other things, they need to go looking for it. I took his advice after losing an entire crop of carrots, of all things, to worms. Never had problems again
@sun6moon93 жыл бұрын
What worms were those?
@fiffihoneyblossom58913 жыл бұрын
@@sun6moon9 I don't know the English word, but it looks like a maggot. Just much bigger. Also one with red and yellow banding around it. Though I don't find a lot of those, they wreck havoc. Both are probably from the manure I used
@sun6moon93 жыл бұрын
@@fiffihoneyblossom5891 so...what manure did you use?
@fiffihoneyblossom58913 жыл бұрын
@@sun6moon9 this was some time ago, it was mix of manure from the stables/ petting zoo. So various fowl like ducks and chickens, goats, horses, camel..... Worked great but had a lot of bugs. I have since switched to just horse manure, since my father in law now owns two horses and I get it for free. Honestly I should have just let it heat up beneath a tarp before getting it in the garden, and I struggled with those grubs two years after using it. I have since added more variation to beds and that has lessened my problems with worms and birds significantly. Right now my biggest losses are from birds pecking out new sprouts. Bastards
@sun6moon93 жыл бұрын
@@fiffihoneyblossom5891 ahhh...so the problem was not only the pletora of manure but also you didnt cured it. Thanks for the share and detailed experience. Regarding the birds...come on now. My grandmother taught to plant more seeds...some for me, and some for everything else. Happy farming

I crowded my raised beds this yr w/several different veggies (totally accidental, the potatoes really took off), & I noticed I don't even have invasive moth caterpillars this yr despite them destroying my pelargoniums in the same yard. I've only seen less destructive soil bugs in the veggies that are easier to control. I also planted the basil next to the tomatoes, lemon grass next to the bell peppers, etc. This is the first yr I haven't had to use organic pest spray weekly. So, there must be something to planting like this!

First year organic, with inter-planting, and using herbs/flowers in the vegetable garden. Insect problems reduced about 80% over last year. No potato bugs, ladybugs took care of most aphids, wasps ate most of the caterpillars. Only unaffected insect was the Squash Bug, which laughed at my efforts and launched an all out attack on every squash and pumpkin vine in the garden. They swarmed vines that were completely surrounded by dill, marigolds, and other fragrant plants. Like the honey badger, Squash Bugs just don't give a ****.

Great video. This is my first year doing the back to Eden method. I know Paul has said that with this method, pests usually drown because there is so much water in the plants. I normally don't have too much of a battle with pests, other than the Colorado potato beetle and the cabbage worms. This year I did not net and they are doing well. As far as the potatoes, I hand pick those things 3, 4, 10 times a day. Errrr. I think I will try the marigolds next year like you did. Thanks for the great tip.

Good video. I tried a little something I checked on and saw some folks do for another reason, that is, I planted some pole beans with my tomatoes. So far I haven't seen the first hornworm! I didn't get any beans either but I think I got them out a little too late to set before the temperatures ramped up too much. I let some of the weeds grow, to a point and do include stuff like basil and marigolds among the plants though none were very close to the tomatoes this year. I also concentrate on keeping the plants as healthy and happy as I can and I haven't had much of a problem at all with most things. Not even the slugs and snails have shown any real interest. So far I'm having a good season.

Here in the high desert of Arizona, last year I lost almost my entire garden to pests.... rabbits, packrats, and the bane of my existence.... squashbugs. I did notice that the ONE thing nothing touched was my herbs. My basil grew like crazy, my oregano and thyme did fabulously.... The rabbits took whole tomato plants, ate my marigolds as soon as they were planted, an onion popped up and was gone the next day and the squash bugs destroyed my pumpkins, zukes, cukes, melons, acorns, yellow crook necks. This year, I will have a ring of basil (I love me some basil) and thyme and oregano around my entire garden and intermixed with marigolds and all sorts..... I am even considering mint in my garden paths.... and catnip (squashbugs apparently hate that, and the catnip might encourage my cat to keep mice and rats at bay (kitty munchies).... crossing fingers :)
