Enchanting as always Jenny & Mac. Cruising with pets can be wonderful. We cruised, not near as far as you guys, but with a Lasa Apso who sadly has gone the way of all flesh from old age. We now cruise our Alberg 37 MkI with two Siamese apple head sealpoints. They have been phenomenal sailors. The litter box makes it all much easier and we have harnesses for them. Underway they stay below or are on leashes and allowed not further than the cockpit. At anchor, they remain in the harness unleashed free to roam the boat and we do kitty watch. Making sure they 1, don't fall overboard, 2 that predatory birds don't get them - we have bald eagles and ospreys and large owls. As cats sleep a lot, it is a nice break from routine. We have two large 3' x 4" diameter Manilla ropes we hang over vertically lashed to a stanchion port and stb should they fall overboard to climb back aboard. So far, it has never been used. At night, they remain below. Such a great life you are giving Disco J Dog. Fair winds, JB

Thank you so much for the many tips. We tried to take our 10 year old dog on board for the first time this summer in the San Juans and had many of these challenges. Specifically, we could not convince her to potty on board - though she is always happy to go right on the dock as soon as we disembark 😞 - also have higher freeboard than Maya and she can't just jump up from our dinghy. We will try the taping our astroturf to a known pee place trick - that's brilliant as dogs seem to REALLY want to cover up previous dog's markings. BTW I had a fan girl (well, old woman) moment in Anacortes this summer when I spotted you all in your van.

The best thing is that disco learnt to dump straight overboard and it's not a problem littering any other places aboard

Thanks for the tips, I'm trying to get our four year old chocolate lab used to being on our Bristol 40, she seems to have anxiety issues for some reason. She loves swimming and the beach, getting her used to the boat has been a struggle. It's encouraging to see folks that have been successful having dogs on board

@erictakakjian6021 it takes time and it's uncomfortable for everyone, but they figure it out. Try the pee pad on stop sign trick- that really helped us.

We finally got our boat out to the SanJuans in September, we brought our 1 year old blue healer mix, a little worried how she would do, but she did great on the boat. We were out for 3 days & not a single accident on the boat. She did fall off a rock & into the water when trying to find a good place to poo. A lot of energy so she just went crazy when we went into shore. The clip with Disco & the plastic coyote is still my favorite.
