As a native speaker of Polish, fluent English speaker, living in Ireland I wanted to say something about learning and using a language. What helped me speak English was and is a great amount of listening to native speakers, mostly through mini stories. Mini stories plus random interesting stuff on KZbin helped me to start speaking to others. Why? Because when you hear someone talking, you know it will be ok to apply it in YOUR conversation. You also deeply trust that the way the native speaker speaks is simply true. Surprisingly I haven't learnt that from Irish people because they don't speak with clear pronunciation and it is hard to understand them. I learned mostly from the audio files. I only apply what I hear in mini stories and KZbin to my real life conversations. And it just works.

Yes, but did you have any fear of speaking? Of confronting an audience, a situation, where you're least confident presenting yourself in a language where you can't uphold your up-to-then identity? Issue, here, is not all about how you learn. Had what you say been true in every case, whoever watched or listened to mini series, or took any such path, should necessary succeeded at speaking fluently. But that's not the case. Listening is a great component of learning a language, true, but it could hardly help someone who's just afraid to speak, in isolation. For what it's worth, it could just deepen his/her--because then, in many cases, concepts of "correct/good" and "wrong/bad" English are to be dealt with. I'm a native speaker of Persian, and an English language teacher, btw.

Hi Christian, very interesting as usual. I teach my 11 yos how to converse in English in Palma. I found that the children knew Grammar (written) & had enough vocab & were good at reproducing English sounds with the correct input. However, they never had the self-confidence to actually use the language. I figured this was a skill that could be taught & the situation I encountered was analogous to how I was taught piano; if you sat me in front of some sheet music, I could just about painfully eke it out even after years of practice, lessons & even some exam passes. I was a very poor parrot. Update to last year and after a few improvisation lessons , I can now freely improvise on a standard with no music. I had to learn blues flavoured chords, scales, & progressions but as an experienced student this was doable. So I wrote a very basic script where they ask each other questions (mainly about their own life/culture) & then I literally coached them through it line by line ...(Ask him/her how old he/she is? etc) but they never see my script. The results were encouraging; the near native speakers found it very natural & EZ, and were even improvising question for me. The weaker ones, I often had to correct with their flow & vocab, but with the weakest who barely spoke it was transformational. The weakest had a real fear of the language ("no entiendo Ingles" after 7 years in class) but after 10 minutes I had them asking questions & answering in a language they had just told me they couldn't understand let alone speak. Ok it was a bit parrot, but kids are like tape recorders, easily reproducing what they get input. Unfortunately, Covid terminated my bit of teaching improvisation, but I felt I was onto somut!

Your approach is very useful like a tool to studying. Before to give answer " how to study " I would ask - is level of beginner or level of some one who tries to perfectionise his english - so, what level ??? If you do not understand English or do not understand way of speaking, ex:american, british ect. I have a problem with American and fast British - but Cristian's way of speaking is clear for me ))), 5% that I do not understand are unknown words. How I do ?? I look for interesting argument and try to listen English in English explanation. Argument that touch you is CRUCIAL, argument must keep some answer for you. Listening for fun - make fly your thoughts somewhere over there, lose attention, and loose final interest - wich bring you idea that you are not able to go deeper in English

A good conversation is a two-way street, It's important that both parts listen to each other and speak when it's time to do so. So you go back and forth, listening and speaking. A situation that annoys me is when people won't either shut up and listen or won't talk enough. I don't like to cut someone off or be constantly asking questions or trying to make conversation because the other person won't say anything. As a chat etiquette keep this issues in mind.
