No we are allergic to the urine protein and their saliva. I am highly allergic but I have 6 rescues and tons of hill cats. Never have an issue unless a new one comes up. Then I fix it. I light vacuum daily heavy vacuum 2x a month. I yes was my walls and fans I wash curtains once a mth and my outer bedding. I keep their beds steam sanitized and my couch cushions also. Except for seeing cats they dnt smell cats and no allergies. I keep the yard misted It’s easy actually. Besides the litter and wiping their coats w a rag each day which I’ve always done that w my big dogs. So literally litter is the only difference than what I do anyhow. Oh and since Covid I have an eco steamer w silver for viruses. So if I see a sick kitty I quarantine them and steam the rescue houses and porch. I know it sounds a lot but it’s actually normal cleaning. Really quick. When I worked on the ambulance I lived on Benadryl because of the houses I visited. Never had a problem at home w me or anyone else. We live in Texas so those allergies are actually worse because it’s so dry. My brother and 2 nieces are bad. They love coming here because they’re not allergic and they can actually pet them w no issues. My youngest daughter is adopted. We’ve had her since she was 4. Her CPS workers and advocate lawyer were here 1-4 x a month. Always asked how I kept the house like this. No hair/odors inside or out. No I have 4 litter boxes. 2 upstairs and 2 down. I have 3 huge dogs. 2 are older. Literally I spend more time cleaning them up than all those cats. 😂❤. Actually my daughter is worse than them!!😂😂😂😂 clean my litter 2x a day add baking soda. I make their raw food. It’s actually cheaper and healthier. I do give kibble so they get to nibble but that’s it. Seriously. I get up do the same as the video author. I feed go throw on laundry. Air my house out for 15 mins everyday just because I like fresh. Even in the cold mths. Do my workout. Reset then wake-up my family for work and school. I get ready for the day. They do then we’re off. Even get my coffee and quiet time. Just a quick routine. Daily weekly mthly routines. All good. I’m 52 and had my back broke w a 2 story 2800 sq foot home so I’m much slower than I used to be. It still only takes me about 2 hrs daily even w quiet time and cooking to do all this. We’re in kitten season right now so there’s a little more w them. Getting the vetted and spade/nuder. Adoptions. So this routine keeps me free to help them. No I’m not bragging. Just saying it’s not as hard as people thing. Overwhelming at first when cats started showing up. I never had cats till now. But I live in a wooded area which naturally is an animal haven. At a lake. The issue started for us all. A few of us took over and started fixing the issue before it got worse than it had become at that point. They keep rodents down which is nice and a fair trade!! All good. Now I have several indoor/outdoor cats and many outside. With more that we rehomed or adopted out. No it’s not true. They still mouse after they’re fixed. We even have a few that feed babies when something unfortunate happens. I’m actually the one that got adopted by them. Not the other way around!!! So please. Help when you can. Dsnt have to be monetary. Food litter and winter rescue huts or cages help all that do this. Usually this happens when people take in cute kittens or cats and dnt fix them. Cats can breed by mths of age and have litters every 2 to 3 mths which adds up fast. Even donating to a local vet to help spade/nuder ferals is a huge help. No names needed. Thanks for listening to my rant!!xoxo❤❤❤❤

Yes, I always buy big boxes of baking soda, just for my Kitty's box. My routine is I scoop his box out before I go to bed, because his litter box is in my bed room😱😂, and I sprinkle the baking soda on top when I get done. I clean his box out every 3 weeks or so. Problem is, he wants to do his business after EVERY time I scoop it lol.

@@MicolAndOtherAnimals I get the off brand baking soda from the dollar store, and it usually has little clumps in it to help with the dust. This is great advice but after hearing one particular ingredient I do have to make a disclaimer: Cat urine contains ammonia. If anyone here is going to be using bleach to clean their box PLEASE make sure it's very diluted and that the box has been thoroughly rinsed first. There are stories of people pouring a bleach solution directly into their empty, urine soaked plastic and that can create toxic fumes. Personally I would advise to never mix bleach with anything except water but when in doubt google is your friend. Dawn would also work in place of bleach. The baking soda is fantastic and I am excited to try this!
@MicolAndOtherAnimals2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is why I use baking soda at the bottom of my litter box, then rinse and use a 10% bleach solution 😉
@HaunaMyKiki4 ай бұрын
I switched to a stainless steel litter box, and it's a real game-changer! Plastic is porous and absorbs odors over time, making it impossible to completely deep clean. Plus, little bits of plastic start to peel at the bottom with their scratching creating scratch marks, which allows even _more_ bacteria to sit down in there. But with stainless steel, I just give it a little swish around with water and Dawn dish soap, and everything comes right out!

My veterinarian told me it's very bad for cat urinary health to put baking soda in their litter, as they ingest the powder later while cleaning their legs and feet and baking soda is very alkalizing, while cats need very acid urine because of their body chemistry. Baking soda alkalinity causes them to develop painful chronic inflammation, infection, and crystals (which act like razor blades in their urinary tracts). My cats stopped getting these kinds of issues when I quit using baking soda in the litter. Lesson learned, but not before a lot of agonized furry folk and a ton of vet bills.
@MicolAndOtherAnimals2 жыл бұрын
My cats are raw fed, so their urine is naturally acidic, and the ratio of baking soda to litter is quite low 😉

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, meaning it's molecular structure is one sodium atom and two carbon atoms. Carbon has four valence electrons, which allows it to bond with a high number of molecules. This is the main process behind it's ability to absorb smells and even poisons as activated charcoal. Also, it neutralizes acids because it has a ph of about 9, making it quite basic. It does not, however, neutralize bases. Research before giving info! Otherwise this is a solid tip!

I am at the shelter so often, it was hard not to become a cat person as well. (Growing up with a dad who was a dog trainer and k9 cops and brothers who all followed him, I was the only girl, who did the same. But unlike my brothers. I started to get kittens!) I got 2, for my home my cats, then I began fostering bc I had the space for babies to be kept safely from the other cats and dogs (or I wouldn’t bother fostering cats). But seeing I did. I learned that every litter out there no matter how expensive, how great the world said it was! I learned to line the litter box with baking soda first. Then the litter, then baking soda. Then litter. Then the top. Soda again. Basically what’s being said here. I just put a bit more on the bottom. And it was my saving grace. Aside from layers of baking soda which absolutely helps. But a nice lining of baking soda at the very bottom, which I allow to look like it’s covered in a dusting of snow. And then the litter goes in on top of that, and that bottom layer I noticed the next day, totally clumps up any urine that would break apart no more breaking apart crumbling urine if your cats have gone litter box crazy. Like mine. Who seems to aggressively dig the second it’s cleaned which is 2x a day, and I have 3 boxes. But I stay on top of it. It’s just better than not, however. That layer on the bottom of baking side. Perfection. Nobody smells cats. My husband likes to still bitch about the smell. But he does it on purpose to break my stones bc he was never a cat person until one which we kept, became his “dog cat” he says they’re so close bc the cat is a dog stuck in a cats body, and he may not be wrong but I won’t tell him that!!!! Anyway. If you don’t have the money for the robot box. BAKING SODA a nice dusting of a covering before any littler, then add some more. Then litter. Then some baking soda. Then litter on top and leave it as a dusting, and the cat will do the rest, and the urine comes right out, nothing at all stuck to the box. My 3 boxes love this. I refused to spend that much on a litter box. So baking soda it is. And if you would like. The fresh scents that you can stick to box. Just add a nice scent.

I put baking soda in the bottoms of my 3 litter pans, 2 scoops of non clumping scented litter on top of that then 2 scoops of non clumping regular clay litter and finally 3 scoops of pine pellets. As you have noticed, the pine smell covers up the urine odor. I take the solids out of the pans and flush them. The urine breaks down the pine pellets into saw dust, making it easier to scoop out the solids. I have another set of the pans, already with the same levels of litter in them to change out once a week to allow myself to dump the used litter under our apple trees and in holes to fill them in. I then wash the pans and allow them to dry before putting litter in them again to change out after 7 more days. One thing I do, that is different it to put the pans, with the litter in them, into larger pans to catch most of the litter that my 3 cats try to throw out of the pans. I keep a dust pan and brush handy to sweep any other litter that gets on the floor.

Any suggestions for someone who has 12 cats? I clean the litter box twice a day and still can't seem to get rid of the smell. I haven't tried baking soda. I will try this to see if it helps. Thanks.
@MicolAndOtherAnimals3 жыл бұрын
The type of litter makes a huge difference, too! Definitely use the baking soda sandwich, but I’d also make sure you’re using a good litter. And many also commented that the right diet can make a big difference. With 12 cats, it’s definitely not easy, but I’d look into it, too 😊

Buy no grain cat food.... Or make it; sweet potatoes, beef or chicken,with peas and cranberries. Next, charcoal without the fluid added and crush and put in a jar beside the box. I also use a pink salt lamp on the floor next to the box. I only use baking soda on the bottom. You have to scoop the poop twice a day to keep the smell down. I use the pine bedding for horses from Tractor Supply ask the clerk which on it is.... It cost about 7 dollars for 50 pounds of cat litter. I also use strait peroxide bottle with a spray attachment to the top to spray the box every time I change it. Peroxide is the main ingredient for taking pet odors away. I also found if there is a mess on the floor if you clean it up and use mouth wash it takes the odor away. You can also use mouth wash in a spray bottle for mattresses if there was an accident on it to take the smell away. I also put a dap of butter or coconut oil on my cats nose once a week and no more fur balls. I use dried and ground up pumpkin seeds for worms... Put a little in there food for a week. Then do it again after about 10 days and check the poop on a slid under a microscope for worms. A cap of Olive oil with two drops of walnut oil to clean the ears takes all the mites out and dirt from a kitty. Take a drop of the walnut oil on the belly and see if it swells before using it in the ears. Just like some people love peanut butter and never have a problem and others will send them to the hospital. Cats are the same. Walnut is an ingredient for taking worms out of cats and dogs. I have used black walnut to get rid of worms in dogs for years. Whip worm is common in dogs now and is a permanent problem if you own a dog. So you have to deal with it monthly. Hope this helps.

@@rebeccashetter2309 I also use equine pellets from Tractor Supply ($7 for 40lbs), and feed my kitty Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Feast raw freeze dried cat food (w/some distilled water to moisten). It’s expense, but no more pee/poop smell, and much healthier for him.
@mtlienz2279 Жыл бұрын
really nice work & video! id like to suggest looking into using 'wood pellets' as cat litter instead of all this overpriced expensive marketed stuff; only thing is you'd need a 'filter' sorta like a colander to filter out all the saw dust. wood pellets are way more natural & eco friendly + you wont really need the baking soda but doesnt hurt to use it esp for the cleaning part
@MicolAndOtherAnimals Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing ☺️ I prefer clumping litter, since it allows me to keep my kitties’ health in check daily, but I know many people like wood pellets 😎
@joterry79282 жыл бұрын
Great solution! Now please tell me…do you have a cure for the kitty that tracks litter all over the house? I’ve tried everything, including special mats to “catch” the loose litter, and indoor/outdoor carpet placed directly in front of the litter box. She’s terrible about tracking it everywhere!
@MicolAndOtherAnimals2 жыл бұрын
Sure do! There’s 3 things I found that help: 1)I like a litter box with a “foyer” (like in my 2 videos, the scandi inspired litterbox and the Malm chest of drawers turned litterbox) 2) a good mat, I really like mine 3) the right litter, I used world’s best cat litter. This keeps tracking at an all time minimum 😉

And here I thought I invented my own process!!!! Well! GREAT MINDS! I am looking to get out of the old typical clumping litter I’ve grown used to which clumps a million times better now but if I could get something that helps with the cat urine odor, and clumps as well, I’ve heard of other kinds but heard so much I’m on info overload. So I’m trying to figure that out still for now tho arm n hammer is doing its job NUCHHhHH better with clumping when laid down in layers like making a cake!

Where did you find the box? And how did you add the flap to the box? Also wondering if the box was is too high for them to enter and exit without making a mess? They will need to jump in and out. But I guess the sand doesn’t go everywhere because of the walls. I also can’t find this litter in Europe so wondering if there is different name for it so I can find another brand that makes this type? It looks very different from regular types like this is sand and the other is like pebbles or something.
@MicolAndOtherAnimals Жыл бұрын
The inner and outer pieces are from Ikea, the litter is Worlds best litter which I can find easily here in Germany 😉 the combo of high walls on the inside litter box and the “kitty foyer “ really help keep the litter in. I cut the hole so they would need to lift their legs hit not need to jump 😉
