IMO, the hugest factor in mitigating pet smells is the flooring. A carpeted floor is just asking for odor retention no matter how many times it's vacuumed, cleaned deodorized, etc. With a carpet, there is often no way to tell until far too late when somebody has decided to turn one particular corner into a new relieving area, and the embedded odor only reinforces the behavior. I finally began getting rid of the old carpeting in 2018 once my wife died, and the difference is night and day. (I swear the old carpet should have been declared an EPA cleanup site!) Plus, on a solid floor, spills can be spotted and cleaned up relatively quickly and more easily deodorized to discourage further "accidents" and minimize smells. Temperature plays a big part as well. Right now, I don't perceive any odors but in summer, even with the AC on, the warmer air seems to promote evaporation of aromatic chemicals and once I become aware of an odor, I know it must be bad. Why? Nose-blindness. Your residence will always smell better to you than an outsider, and even when you smell nothing, a visitor might.

The 7 tips pretty much cover it. There is no Litter Genie here. My own health and disability sometimes get in the way of scooping daily. And that same health prevents use of scented litters. Deodorizer? I cover bottom of litterbox with baking soda before pouring litter in. There is a monthly swapping and washing of the 2 sets of 2 litter boxes for my 2 orange tabby rescue fellows. Wow, they will be 14 and 15 this year, where does the time go! 🙀😸 Diet: with the various cats who have shared my life since the 1990s diet has been found to really make a difference. These 2 fellows are both on a bladder crystal diet several years now and that seems to produce far less malodorous waste than some commercial foods. 🚽 There is one litterbox each side of toilet & a mix of 3 different kinds of scoobable litter is used. 😸😺 Sometimes the guys will follow me to the bathroom and we'll have a group "elimination event". So, is that a sign of imprinting? 🤔

I have to agree about Dr Elsey's clumping litter. I and my cats were huge fans for years, but as you mentioned it got sticky and just wasn't the same quality as before. I used Garfield cat litter but it seemed to make my cat itch, switched to soft pine cobble. Once he got used to it he has no issue using the litter box. I use ModKat litter boxes/ Litter pans, I find them easy to use and I love the liners that keeps the box very clean. Of course, as you say, clean that box every single day do not let eliminations sit for a week and then wonder why your house smells. A simple sprinkle of baking soda works wonders. Thanks for the video.

I used Dr. Elsey's litter and loved it until it started to creep up in price, dust, and hardened like cement. Also, I have fibromyalgia and carrying heavy litter up 2 flights of stairs to my apartment was getting harder and harder. I switched over to grass seed litter and will never use clay again. It's lightweight, clumps hard and contains odor well. Only downside is it tracks everywhere. But, putting litter mats and pet rugs by the boxes catch most of the litter. I have a hand dust brush and pan for quick clean up. I have 5 cats and there's very little to no odor. I do scoop whenever someone uses the boxes and first thing in the morning before feeding them. I also keep the soiled litter in a sealed box on the balcony behind my apartment. That contains the odor between trash days. It's possible to keep your home odor free while having multiple cats. It just takes commitment and upkeep.

Another great video thanks for making it. I'm still happy with pine pellets for my kitty litter. $6 for 40lbs is hard to argue with. I just treat it like standard litter nowadays. I got a sifting litter box (that arm and hammer one) and messed with sifting out the sawdust after scooping for a while, but it's more trouble than it's worth. Now I just scoop the poo once per day (ish) and add a cup of pellets. Then once a week, or as needed, I dump the whole thing and add an inch of fresh pellets. I never notice a pee smell. One of my kittens is really bad at burying his poo, more incentive to scoop often I guess, so I smell that; but the other kitten is good about burying and I don't smell it as much. I do need to get a better place to scoop to, right now it's just a cheapo plastic can that grocery bags fit in nicely, but it leaks odors. The litter genie bugs me what with its DRM bags. Plus I think I could DIY something like that from some drainage pipe and a couple plastic plates. My kittens have only ever used pellets so I can't comment on whether many cats will take to it. That arm and hammer sifting litter box I have is kinda small now that they're 7 months old so I'm getting a new bigger one. The stainless steel one Mallory showed off looks neat, but it's a hundred bucks almost for an oversized baking pan. Ikea has a gigantic plastic tub for $5-15 that I've seen a few people on KZbin claim is great, but it's probably a bit too big. I'll just order a bigger cheap plastic one for now. That's what we used for my cat growing up and she made it over 21 so we must've been doing something right. Pellet litter scoop? I am intrigued, to the googles!

We started off with our cat using the litter box inside. As a courtesy to my family members (and queen Kitty herself), I'd scoop out anything the moment I saw something. A little overzealous, I know. Then our cat started spending more time outside. At first, she'd want to come in to use the box - which seemed cute and silly - but now, it's very rare that she goes inside. I bought a new bag of litter as the last one was getting towards the end and they're both still sitting in the "cat cupboard" a good 4 months later or more (originally, I'd get a pack a fortnight). I imagine cats prefer to go outside where they can choose where/when etc. I just love that we've always got a clean litter box now and she still goes in the right spot if there's an emergency. Who wouldn't love these little darlings?!!😸

Me? Walnut. Amazing stuff, quick clump, best, but pellets will do, three inches on the bottom. Quick clumping non scented litter on the top, about 4 inches. Any type will do. I have a 20 pound cat. I can’t even count how many cats I’ve had. Over 50 years. And this is the magical formula. My daughter came over one day and since he’s such a big cat, the box is big, and heavy, I asked her to help me do the ‘big clean” you know the complete dump and wash, she said man this doesn’t even smell bad. And it wasn’t fantastically clean, I’m older and he’s a bloody big cat 🙈. True story. I DO scoop regular. Ps. I had no idea my little rescue kitten was going to to turn out to be such a BEAST. Bit this works. And, the food. You gonna give them wet food, it STINKS. 🤷♀️

I use Petco's clumping litter. I can refill a 16lb jug for $8. Instead of filling the litter box, I make a mound in the middle. The cats naturally go there and I use much less litter. It clumps well. I scoop after each use. No odors and no damp litter sitting in the litter box. The only exception is, one cat likes to P in a particular corner of one of the boxes. I have to put some litter there for her. Good video, as always.

You might want to try pine pellets. $6 gets you 40lbs at tractor supply and similar stores in the US. It's a tossup whether your cats will take to it though, and you have to scoop the poo mostly on its own rather than with a nice 'breading' of litter on it which bugs some people.

I use pine pellets so the urine just turns the pellets into dust, which fall through from the top pan, into the bottom pan, which is lined with a puppy pee pad. Its strange how that dust is pretty dry and has no odor. I remove the pee pad with the dust once or twice a week and throw it in the garbage. For the "solids" I use a pine pellet scoop to separate the solids from any nearby pellets, and put them into a doggy poop bag which I tie up. This bag is placed into something similar to the Litter Genie--the Litter Champ. With two cats, there really isn't much output when its only the solids that are going into it. Once a week, I'll change the Litter Champ bag. This is the only place there is ever any amount of smell and it is minimal. Usually I'll sprinkle in some scented litter baking soda into the Litter Champ just to freshen it up. Before I switched to pine pellets, my experience was that Slide always started to smell bad after a week--way faster than any other litter I used. I still have a giant bag of it in my garage.

Skip the puppy pee for a few days and try just putting a scoop of pellets in the bottom pan. Your wallet might thank you. Maybe with a sprinkle of baking soda if their pee is real stinky. @@Jcewazhere 100% this advice. I also put a small handfull of pellets in the bottom pan and there's no need for a bag or a puppy pad. You just scoop the poops daily, empty the bottom pan when needed and clean the whole thing once a week. Better for your wallet (and the environment) :)

Just some comments to take or leave: My vet says to avoid baking soda or products with baking soda because it is irritating to your cat's eyes. I've also read that cats hate litter box liners so don't use them. I don't use clay litters because clay is a non-renewable product, with all the issues that implies. I currently use Oko cat litter, a wood product that comes in original (pellets) or soft (sand-like texture). I have 8 cats & they all like it, though some prefer the soft texture. I've used a corn cob litter in the past that was really good, but I can't find it anymore. In my opinion, asking your cat to use a covered litter box is like asking a person to use a port-a-potty on a blazing hot day with the added bonus of breathing in used litter dust. Yuck. 🤔

Hey Cory, that's a great question. One tip is starting with a larger litter box to give her some more space, and then secondly, you may want to try a litter box with high sides that are made from one piece of material rather than a separate cover, like Frisco's high-sided box. Large storage bins can also work; you can cut open a hole in the side for her to walk through, and then the smooth, high walls will contain everything on the sides.

Pretty good! Personally, I don't use them because I find the pellet scatter a little annoying and haven't found a sifting litter box that really works for me (nor does scooping seem very easy), but the odor control is great, and they're so cheap!

Love this channel and very informative about cats 😃 thank you so much 🙏🏽 I have been using Pretty Litter for the last 1 year and my Arthur 🐱 loves it. It is a bit pricey but I feel it works for him and me. Doesn't smell and just need to only scoop out the poop and flush it down the toilet. Plus the litter needs to be changed only once every month.

About 5-6 months ago, I started using Dr. Lisa Pearson's recipe for my cats' food. Bo and Penny look Soooo good. so silky and happy, and less than half of the poop. they are glowing, I kid you not. The litter boxes do not stink like before. DO NOT FEED DRY FOOD! Or do, but it will make your cats sick in the long run. I cant afford to feed commercial wet food, but chicken thighs cost $1.99/l;b or less, which is cheaper, if you really want to feed your cats what they need. look it up.
@hallaloth3112 Жыл бұрын
I wish I could find them that cheap. I'm trying to find a place to source them in bulk (I'd rather do bigger batches in bulk and store than a batch every week) and not being able to find an agreeable price for a decent amount is one reason I haven't switch our two over from the canned wet food we're using. (Not having adequate storage space is the other currently).

Our cats have only ever been inside/outside felines. We've been fortunate to have not needed litter boxes much past the time when they were around six months of age - or there abouts. We live in a country where there is no natural predation that can harm cats, other than perhaps other cats. Dogs must be chained by law on a lead while be taken on a walk, but that must be rarely enforced because dog owners allow their dogs to run free at the park and on local playing fields. Our first cat, tigger, a tortoises shell female, was a frisky fighter so I guess that she went wherever she felt like but we never knew. Even now, Lenny, nearly three must go somewhere but we don't know where. I.'m uncertain where they do their business actually but perhaps it's in ours or a neighbours seldom cultivated vegetable garden. They, the neighbours, that is seem not to be green thumbed, mind you, neither are we, but generally the property is kept clean and tidy. Before we got our first family cat, gardening was unpleasant because neighbourhood cats used this for their lavatory, but when our first cat we owned showed up on the scene things changed-no more pooping in our garden. Ours must have used the neighbours garden, but they've never mentioned this to us so peace prevails. Thank goodness!

We first used a non scented clay based clumping litter and had barely any smell with it but switched to Cats Best original as is made of wood and flushable, but now we can smell the poop for so long after the cats gone to the litterbox. Her diet is mostly the same and we live in a small apartment and she gets the after poop zoomies so she'll spread her poopy smell everywhere! Not sure what to do :(. We clean it daily but sometimes she'll poop around 10pm or so, right before we go to bed.

Are there wipes that are safe to use to wipe the litter box in between thorough washes? I use a double-bottom litter box with wood pellets and I'd love an easy way to clean the litter box after throwing away the sawdust in the bottom part. @@anamaxa Maybe if there was some sort of *dry* enzyme cleaner you could add, but the water content itself would be a problem for almost every product out there, including clay. @hallaloth3112 Жыл бұрын
Could be a couple of things 1) Could be the litter disagrees with her. Some cats are really fussy over their litter, and if she's in pain going to the bathroom isn't going to be fun. Check with your vet 2) Could be a territory/stress factor. If this is a new development, if anything 'new' has changed either in routine or in her 'territory' itself she could just be stressed over it 3) She may just want another litter box. It's usually recommended Number of cats +1 in terms of how many litter boxes you generally need (it does vary from household to household. . but if someone is ambushing her by a litter box she's not going to want to go near it).

Than I just put in a new wee wee pad and that’s it. No mess. I never have smells never have to scoop and no litter trails ever. The wee pads are excellent to use.
