Actually the "loop of shame" is a good tactic to come out of supercruise right in front of the toaster box of a station. For new players that have difficulties to find the entrance of a station, remember, all stations have the entrance facing the planet / moon they orbit.

a note to everyone is that fuel scoops are apparently not affected by speed, only by direction and distance. this means that you don't need to throttle and speed up or slow down and orbit your star, just find a comfortable spot where temperature is stable around 65%, throttle down to minimum and wait right there, your tank will keep filling up without having to manually adjust speed and direction constantly

Tip for fuel scoop distance: I try to make sure the yellow circle surrounding the star (where you hit the emergency stop) is just at the top of your screen when circling. This keeps your temperature around that 65%

It's a very bad Idea setting up your Base at Jameson Memorial, if you have the intention to play in Open, cause this System is a permanent Hotspot for Griefers. But when I need a Ship or Module, yes I come to Shinrarta Dezhra and buy it. :)

I could only find a slightly worse FSD for the first explorer. So I had like 27ly range instead of 30ly. A jump that would have been one hop was two, the mid point was a neutron star and it dumped me in the beam. I somehow managed to boost out far enough to get an emergency jump off to the next hop. If I didn't have that next hop locked on I would have been toast

Yeah sometimes you cook your modules scooping and don’t realize it till they screw up. Several of the “Road to Riches” systems are populated. Whenever you see a station just pop in and repair everything. Good habit to get into.

I gotta get the Kill Warrant Scanner... Three in a row that the po po were blasting didn’t have warrants in the system I was in and I had over 29k in bounties that I couldn’t get rid of because of “notoriety”. I rammed that ship into asteroids until it blew and got a new one but it took over an hour of flying around and internet searches. Needless to say, zero money made. Good thing sidewinders are free and the bounty doesn’t carry on the new ship. Also. I won’t have to do this again as I’ll be mining. Still would be great to have that scanner though.

Played the other day a bit (after a looong time off it)… disappointed they still have that (it should *not* be a violation to help the good guys shoot the bad guys)

how on earth do you scan? and what do you scan with? there are so many scanners and i cannot find the button to use them in the keyboard controls. Forums say just point and wait 5 seconds - nothing happens - totally confused.

@@idjles When you target a ship and point your ship toward it, it will do a basic scan. Look at the bottom right corner, you will see an orange octagon loading and when it's done you will see either "CLEAN" in orange or "WANTED" in red under npc name (you see this at 7:44 in the vid). As soon as wanted appear, you'r free to shoot. You can use a kill warrant scanner to get more bounty out of a kill but that's optional (and it is use like a weapon, get in range point toward target and hold 'fire', a bar will fill up next to target. You ofc need to set it up in fire group)

One point, that hit me as a total noob, that was not mentioned in this video: In the Galaxy Map, under "JUMP DATA", set the jump-distance from "Economical Routes" to "Fastes Routes" as seen in 23:27. Otherwise you will waste so much time with eight or more 4ly jumps, instead of a single jump.

@@zachcleveland3899 Hmm are you using a ship that had a good jump range then ? Eco tried to conserve your fuel while jumping while Fastest jump plotting should make you jump as fast as possible. If you ship have a 25 jump range then if your target system is 20 LY away then it will jump there straight, if not you will need another jump.

Hello Commander Hawkes, thank you very much for this excellent video 😊 As a complete beginner I just want to tell you that one CAN continue using the Docking Computer in all ships from the video. It was a huge relief for me when I discovered this. Just put it in the slot of the Supercruise Assist. For total noobs in this game I find that the docking assistance is much more helpful than the supercruise assistance. This is the only information that I would correct in this video and perhaps add to the text below it so that beginners will find it more easily. It’s much more interesting to get experience in flying through the mining process than to have to grind through the docking training video until one can do it reasonably well. Also I find the docking at small stations much more difficult than the big ones with the “mail slot” entrance. Another good tip for beginners is to use the Ray Gateway in the Diaguandri system. It has nearly all the equipment you recommend and a discount of 15%. Overall it’s really an extremely helpful and well made video. So far the one that has helped me most to start playing the game.

@Urayis wish l bruh first haul of void opals i collected i got pirates that showed up outa nowhere so i raced to break mass lock while spamming the J key and jumped to the first system in the list, then thought i had everything under control so mapped a route home. was super cruising to the station when someone or something tried to interdict me. Then i got to my home station and somehow managed to get stuck sideways in the mail slot.

I was also addicted to Elite in 1984 (and played it for 2 years) by David Braben and Ian Bell, on the BBC Model B microcomputer with 64MB of sideways RAM. It was then a black & white wireframe graphics game and I made it to Deadly Status but never acheived Elite the next level. Thanks Hawkes Gaming for re-invigorating my interest in Elite Dangerous, thumbs up and Subcribed.

When you first split a mining asteroid, allow your collector limpets to pick up the “Chunks “ that have come off as a result of the cracking process. (These have a decreasing life span) then use your abrasion blaster to pick of the remaining surface deposits. This will ensure you maximise the yield from each cracked asteroid

Regarding the bounty hunting part, two extra notes based my experience as a completely new guy: 1. Find and stick with the group of green triangles (copper/police), and look for what they are shooting at. It is the fastest way to locate the unfortunate guy. 2. Avoid shooting anybody else by accident

I just tried your diamond mining... the galactic acreage in my ship said like 290k but the website said 980k... when i got there to sell it was only the 290k...i made like 5 mill off of like 26 diamonds... any idea what i did wrong?

For those still uncomfortable with manual landing and docking, you can replace supercruise assist with the auto dock chip. I personally found it easier to learn supercruise than manual docking lol. Thanks for the awesome guide! Totally made my early game so much easier!

I'm not a new CMDR but I approve of this guide, it's not fast but it's efficient if you're running solo or if you're also with new friends. A problem I had when I was new is that I wasn't sure which method of earning money I wanted to tackle first, and so I swapped between my options further wasting time. Follow this guide and don't do what I did.

when you use the scanner to discover undiscovered bodies (planets) in an undiscovered star system that nobody has visited before. At the end of the scan it will make a 'honk' sound and at the same moment a message will display something like "8 planets discovered"

As of Dec/13/2019 (or earlier since I began to play recently) Opals do not appear on the list of prospecting limpet results, you need to blow up the asteroid in order for opals or something else to show up.

Just to note, on the scanner where all the boxes and triangles appear...if the shape is solid then that is an NPC (computer) pilot but if the shape is hollow (just the outline) then that is a human player and quite possibly far more hazardous if hostile towards you!

A good note to give to other new commanders; this wont really work in the starter systems. Most of the pimped modules for the hauler I found outside of the Pilot's Federation territory.

lol i didn't upgrade my asp explorer drive because the 5a version was in another station nearby. boy was i dumb. I spent 15 minutes super crusing to the other station because the ship is so fat using the default framedrive. noobies who get to this point should toss in a cheap upgrade before they leave to get the best module.

Same ship? Same modules? Make sure your FSD is the best it possibly can be. If you can’t find grade A then try a different station. Each have varying degrees of modules.

2 Days in and I'm in the Python mining! Didn't quite fill my hold on the first run but I got around 70 void opals and about 20 Alexandrite as it still goes for a decent amount. I noticed I didn't have the black lines when scanning but saw on another video that if you have this issue in 1920x1080 you should try lowering your res and then going back. Made it so much easier now I can see the black lines. Also, don't forget that you won't have the 10% discount from Jameson Memorial so the python is a little more expensive in a normal station (around 56m) Thanks for the guide it helped a lot :) Plan on getting Horizons so I can engineer as I'm enjoying it quite a bit :)

After you blow the asteroid up, I would actually suggest waiting for your limpets to collect the already loose ones first. Once they VO's are free and floating they have a certain amount of health. So best to collect those first.

I didn't get it at first. But what he did is put his discovery scanner on his first firegroup. Once it's set to the first firegroup it's set to whatever button you have to fire the first firegroup (right trigger or mouse button I believe)

@@fruitgums When you open the right panel, with your codex and ship info, go to the fire groups section and put the discovery scanner as a 1. Using the left click is how you fire a weapon that is a 1 on the fire group. Putting something as a 2 will use the right click. Make sure you have the right fire group selected, which you can look in the key bindings to either bind it to a key of your liking or see what they have as default. After that, go to a system (it can operate in supercruise) and hold the left click to charge it. It will make a honking sound and tell you how many objects are in the system. With the Full Spectrum Scanner (FSS), you can scan each planet, asteroid field, or signal in the system for more money. The FSS will need key bindings, I believe. I have my key bindings custom and it's been awhile since I've used the default. Hope this helps, CMDR! And sorry I haven't seen this earlier to assist.

Low Temp Diamonds seem to do better at the moment. Wish I had seen these comments yesterday before spending the evening looking for void opals lol. I would also say that since the nerf, many of the other core asteroid elements you find, like Alexandrite and Grandidierite, seem to return almost as good prices as opals, so unless you are being extremely successful at finding just diamonds, it might work out on balance to mine and keep hold of these too. It might mean a little more flying to sell off but you'll still get a fair reward and depending on how much time you are investing in mining, it might on balance work out better than trawling for months trying to hunt out diamonds. If anybody out there is having more success finding LTDs than me, please feel free to comment back because I am by no means experienced at this and it could be that I'm still making some noob mistake or missed something in Hawkes' original tips, which were still an invaluable help to get me started. Thanks Hawkes!

I should add that although I understand this is probably still one of the best ways to make money, don't expect to make a billion in a single gaming session. It took me about two sessions to get to the python and a whole session mining to fill the python, and in that time I found perhaps only four or five diamond core asteroids only. I did notice some with surface diamonds too. If you decide to log off, depending on how good you are at avoiding pirates, you might be safer heading back to a space port first, because I found that first time on logging back on whilst in the asteroid field, the game treated it like a new arrival and a pirate jumped in immediately and obviously went for me with my cargo

Dude, I've realized it looks like they've updated the way asteroids show. I look for bright rocks, but they don't have to be. I have noticed that it's only SMALL asteroids that have anything, the large ones don't. Also, if it gets brighter as you get closer, there's a higher chance. I turn on my ships lights and look for fissures before shooting a prospector limpet. So far I haven't wasted any limpets. It does take a while to find these ores and I think it's just something that you will have to get an eye for. So just keep shippin.

ok, so instead of void opals. you guys need to check eddb.io/commodity mineral section for whats hot. prices change within a few hours and completely within a day. New stations pop up that want to buy stuff for high prices. I stopped doing void opals and switched to musgravite. selling for 800-1mil each. Also a VERY important tip. Turn on night vision. UR welcome lol. also Turns out, the pulse scan for asteroids are bugged. You are effectively only seeing 30% of what you ping. Which was the reasons why it took me 2-3 hours just to fill up 64. Imagine how many core asteroids we've blinded flown by just because it didn't light up yellow. The solution is to stop and do a complete 360 ping every time. When you ping 180 degrees behind you, it resets something and when you ping back forward, the asteroids light up. I've been doing this instead of S sweeping and straight lining. I filled my python literally in 1 hour. 192 cargo on musgravite alexandrite bsomething drite. all the drites. Selling for 500k-1mil each. So yea. Fly, diameter sweep. If you see something in the distance, go investigate it. Stop, 360 sweep. All while moving toward the hotspot or the planet. theres also a bug that says that you exceeded yield even though you got perfect blue. they say its a UI error. some asteroids just yield less. 10-15 is what ive been seeing. I saw on a website that they were supposed to give 20 but thats old and reworked out. Ive seem max 15 only. and rarely get max 15 on perfect blues. I've experimented with slightly over with 1 teeny bar into red or slightly under with 1 teeny bar in the yellow. its still pretty muich the same 10-13 i guess its rng..

Grrr these elite boomer pilots ruining the economy, us millenial/genz pilots need to work 3-4 times harder for the same amount. >:C 1.5mil per void opal back in 2019 is now 450-550k in 2020. im thinking theyll be 200k by mid 2021 so this guide will probably become out dated. so we have to do 3x runs. just to get python. Now to get 1 bil. We gotta do 6-7 runs on the python to get to jameson. It took me 2 hours each asp explorer run. so itll take even longer now. UGHH oh well. thats the mining life. I did the same thing on eve online lol. Hi hoh hi hohhhhh. also jesus christ. a 7a power plant is 38 mil. Thats 1 entire 2 hour runs worth. I didnt have enough because i had 98 mil and i thought that was enough to cover it the ship and everything that came with it. I had to settle with 7b or else i had no way to do anything because i already sold my previous ship. i just hope i get lucky and find alot of opals fast initially. For some reason, 1 trick i found is that. Randomly when i havent found a core asteroid in like 10 mins. I would get frustrated and make a right and then go back a little. 1/5 times I found a core asteroid right behind me to the right, just out of sight. I always wondered, how many of them I missed just by a hair. This technique proved useful and proved that im a dumb ass and im missing alot of them. *edit* musgravite sells for 800-1.2mil throughout the day. Ive sold 3 loads for 1.2 mil each. but i had other ores too that sell for 500-800. My total 192 cargo sales were averaging 180 mil each.

this game is as close to space sim as it gets. I woke up at 8 am and mined asteroids until 6 pm. Time passed too fast. It was 2-3 hours per cargo fill. Earns about 250-300 mil per working day. Its dreadfully boring and slow, luckily i have my second screen to watch some anime on the side. But this is truly a test of will to see if you have the stuff it takes to play elite dangerous. Since you need 1 bil for jameson. Thats the first hurdle. The 9-5 grind as an asteroid miner for a 3-4 days. I just finished eating dinner and I have to go back to the roid field like... its my job. v_v I kinda like it, but man. Flying for 30 minutes with no core ore is insanely mind numbing. I crashed into an asteroid when I blew up a rock and the shockwave temporary knocked my shields off. Before it rebooted. I boosted toward the asteroid to get between the cracks to start shooting ore chunks. I got into it too fast and slammed into an asteroid. I wasn't worried atfirst because it happens all the times. the shields can take it, a fully on boost slamming into an asteroid at 345 only does 2 shields of damage and we have a 3 layer bubble. Little did I know, the shields weren't online. So I exploded. I was stunned. 180/194 cargo filled with void opals and grandiate. 120 mil worth. I was 1 rock away from cashing out and going home. I lost it all. V_V

for your Asp Explorer build, you really don't need the supercruise assist, i take that out and keep the docking computer. but its really a personal preference, once you get used to flying without supercruise assist, having the module becomes unnecessary

I started looking for a slightly bigger and still affordable ship that would have enough slots for the docking assistance. So lately. I've been mining a full stack of 192 and instead of selling it for 700k-800k each I wait for some random station to hit 1 mil for musgravite. Then I fly 150 ly over and sell it. I was worried about pirates but i havent been interdicted yet, after flying 600+ ly around. There were several times when a pirate said something as soon as i entered a system because they were waiting for me due to a rumor or something but i was already charging to jump to the next area so they couldn't even do anything. It usually only takes a hour or two for a station to show up thats buying for that high. I started experimenting on ways to find more core asteroids due to the bug. Ive noticed asteroids pop up literally infront of me. Turns out its because not only does the pulse not show all the asteroids. Sometimes rocks don't even load. So I've been doing 360 sweeps and moving at 200 speed hoping i get a more solid view. I'm still averaging 192 every 2 hours though. Sometimes I'm lucky and i get to leave in 1h 30m. Often more than not, whenevr I find 1 core asteroid. There is almost always another one near it. So I always stop to look and circle the area a couple of times. Biggest thing I need to deal with as soon as I get to jameson is start engineering the jump drive or whatever. The same one that the guy has in his python build that lets him have 30 jump range instead of our measily 16. Not sure if I want to upgrade to a mining anaconda because majority of the stations that want to buy stuff for high prices were small stations with no large landing pad.

I am so sick of people trying to condition new players that this game is all about the damn credits and how short a time you make them in. Sure, making money is is a fair part of it, but this game is meant to be played like a second life. Most certainly, good builds are a definite boon, but new players should be taught that it's okay to find their _own_ groove in how they live this new life they're embarking on instead of saying, "Here, this is the _right_ way to play Elite." That being said, I definitely appreciate the thoroughness of the guide, but it shouldn't be touted as the best way.

Played ED since it came out and I've made 3x the entire credits I've ever made, in about 4 hours of following this tutorial! Initially wondered why you spent so long talking about the asteroid shapes and colours, but it really does make a difference when you're out there prospecting!
