Thank you for recognizing that for some people, especially those with major depression and definitely those with bipolar disorder, approaches like meditation, exercise, diet, etc. are not effective in healing depression. It's important that everyone does what works for them, and doesn't look down on others for taking their own path.

Adriana Diaz have you ever experienced major depression? Are you bipolar? As someone who is, I can tell you that for many of us, those things alone are not enough. I've always exercised, eaten well, done yoga, gotten good sleep. I've always been a generally happy and confident person. Major depression doesn't care. Self care is important, but for many people it is not enough. Try understanding instead of judging
@adrianadiaz13797 жыл бұрын
Jane Roper ? certainly judgment is not a "good" thing even though is a normal process of the mind. I think is more about accepting and letting go of our judgments, which leads to understanding. I think my reply wasn't about judgment at all more about oriented to the idea that a person that needs medication should also be attentive to his/her self-care.

I see depression as sort of an emotional cold. Be with it. Nurture it and don't try to speed of your recovery because that can be counter active. I'm not trying to down play the pain involved with depression. I'm well aware that this "cold" can feel like the only way to get better is to end our life but, I've had toothaches that made me want to get rid of pain in a very drastic way. Once you can realize that it is a symptom of something much larger, it can be broken down into indicator lights, that, when paid attention to, are just telling us where in our selves we aren't paying attention and replicating scenarios for neglect. This was much longer winded than I planned and thank you understanding that I need to use as many metaphors as possible to get my points across (((: Love you JP!!!

Depression is a "cold"when it comes from everday issues that make everyone sad once and while... But for some people who have a constant hereditary chemical imbalance since childhood,( the same as a child who is born with diabetes), depression is more comparable to tuberculosis.

In many spiritual circles there is a double whammy when it comes to depression-the belief that we are doing something "wrong" when not in constant bliss or peace or joy or happiness,,,,that we may be thinking "negatively" or drawing "negativity to us through what we focus on. With this kind of thinking we overlay our original mood with judgement and/or denial and we get into deeper water. This was a great video in terms of normalizing the experience of depression and further, to listen for the message that depression is sending.

In my experience, antidepressants were the tool I needed to make the changes in my life to fight my depression, and to help those changes make a difference. I was trying to fight my depression/anxiety unmedicated by simply making life changes, but it got to the point that I couldn’t even leave my apartment without making a panic attack. Once I was figuring out the right medication, I was able to leave my apartment and reach out to friends and make the life changes that helped my depression but felt futile before I figured out my medication. Everyone is different, and everyone’s answer is different, but I feel that there is such a stigma against medications that some people truly need.

When I feel very depressed, often I have to remind myself that the feeling is just temporary, I can have days where I feel very depressed, and days where I’m still not 100% but I’m feeling more optimistic, but typically the very low points don’t last. I would probably be one of those people where meditation and or an inner spiritual pep talk wouldn’t do much to alleviate my depression. There simply those times where I am so numb, nothing can take me out of it until I simply sit in it and let it pass. When I do feel emotions, it can be extremely frightening and painful to the point of being afraid I’m going to die, but I think what I’m learning is that it’s at these points where I need to not run away from my emotions. I think we shouldn’t be afraid of what we really feel as this is key to our healing.

Yep. When people speak of "depression", I think they often forget that there is a huge distinction between " feeling a bit low" and actual clinical depression ( as in the mental illness). Whilst there are certainly things we can do to boost our mood and grow as people, thus far there is no actual "cure" for clinical depression. For most- if not all- people who suffer from a major mental illness, it's a lifelong sentence. All we can ever hope to do is to lessen our suffering somehow. And how that is achieved is different for everyone.

Hi, I always find your tutorials so helpful and have watched most of them now and I try to understand your words the best that I can, I feel they really help my understanding of myself, others and life in general, in doing so, I hope it is working to make me a better, positive and kinder person, well I am trying anyhow, that is the aim!!! I would really like to share a thought please, an idea that I found on my journey, that maybe ties in with the thoughts that negativity can act like sandpaper, that you spoke of in this tutorial. You may know it already or have a sense of it, if so, I hope you can then forgive my ramble! This idea starts with a quote I saw and it goes "The only difference between charcoal and diamonds is, diamonds did well under pressure!!!" Well this started me thinking that 'we' are made of a large percentage of carbon and I have heard that some people make diamonds out of their deceased sometimes!... well that aside and on a spiritual level could we also be like carbon, reflecting spiritually what is created on a physical level? Could our spirit only join with a like for like physical make up, as in, our physical make up mirrors our spiritual make up, the 'energy' of carbon joins with the physicality of carbon here on earth for example? Could it be that under the emotional pressure, we have the chance to evolve into a spiritual diamond form, from density to clarity? I also thought maybe we can be little diamonds spiritually and in time though our journey in life, we grow into bigger spiritual diamonds, due to the challenges we face in our lives. People often refer to each other as diamond gizza! or she is a gem, or they are a rough diamond. A diamond lets the light through it fully and through, however charcoal absorbs the light but light can't shine through. Through meditation and other spiritual practices, they talk of letting the light in, maybe as the arrangement of the elements that make us up, both physically and spiritually changes, to let the light flow completely through us, not just in. This is my rough diamond thought of the day!!!

Sometimes it is good idea if you recognize someone who may be showing signs of depression to speak with them. Depending on where the depression may stem from you can make suggestions. Loss is a major contributor to depression whether it is money, divorce or death. Losing a job may bring up fears of failure whereas death may bring up thoughts of failure and guilt for not being there. Most, not all, causes of depression are fear based and have root in the mind. These repetitive thoughts and the low negative feeling they place into the core of the body often cause the imbalance in chemicals (in the brain). So, I agree with these men, sometimes it is needed to take medication while you explore meditation and even talk therapy. Always in recovery of yourself, it is a must that you learn to honor yourself and perform behaviors of self love as in eating right, surrounding yourself with only people who truly love you and make time for other spiritual things (long walks, meditation, and just plain quiet time).

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts, but I want to put forward something that wasn't really discussed. You said that, in the case of medication, everyone is different and some people can't heal without medical intervention. Well, I want to suggest that in some cases, depression is not a teacher, or a functional way of telling you that something is wrong. Sometimes depression is a lifelong affliction. Someone who has been depressed since early childhood, who has never experienced life without depression, who has never been able to achieve any kind of stable firmament in their life because of depression, does not get a spiritual benefit from that. In fact, depression itself can impair your thinking in such a way that spiritual or philosophical progress is not actually possible. And even with medication and therapy, this depression doesn't go away. I don't know what causes depression like this, though I suspect an endogenous biological cause; l'm just quite certain that it doesn't have the positive function you described about your own depression. What do you think?
@voxevidence13088 жыл бұрын
But if nothing like that happened, then what? And even if it did, how can that depression be a teacher if it is in itself preventing learning?

How are you doing these days? I suggest to get out on the road and travel for an extended time. Something like a pilgrimage might do the trick. But you need to eat clean foods and work on your thinking patterns. Remove toxins, clean up your act, there is always a cause for depression, it is definitely not an affliction. Get a proper functional doctor/naturopath to do proper testing. You might have severe deficiencies or thyroid dysfunction, or or or who knows what else. Be your own doctor and investigate... or try a little lithium orotate and see what happens. There are a million causes for depressive symptoms.

Trauma is sometimes the genesis for lifelong depression. It can occur in utero or in childhood. When you have physical and/or emotional trauma along with a strong biological propensity toward developing depression (which science is now studying) the findings show that people might respond best to an eclectic approach to treatment. I hear what you are saying about how difficult it is to treat some depression, especially when that's all a person has known. I think the most powerful help is learning HOW to live. Sometimes people benefit from a 12 Step group, plus medicine and work with a good psychiatrist or behavioral neurologist. A really terrific coach can be helpful too in conjunction w a therapist. However, personally, I would caution against therapists who are anti-psychiatry. They resist the benefits of medicine and many do not appreciate psychiatrists who not only provide your medication but also some of your psychotherapy. There's so much to share on this topic....!!

I had a DNA test and found out that my lifelong depression, anxiety, social phobia, agoraphobia, mood swings, dysphoria, and hypertension (probably also neurotoxicity) were caused by a genoset called GS224 which is a set of mutations that effect the production of a cofactor called tetrahydrobiopterin which is used by a number of enzymes in the conversion of amino acids into neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin among other things. Antidepressants, anxiety medication, antipsychotics, hospitalizations, suicide attempts, behavioral issues which have gotten me expelled from schools, etc.. Nothing ever worked. Mine is a real biological depression caused not only by a shortage of neurotransmitter production, but compounded by toxicity caused by a build up of phenylalanine in the brain and lack of nitrous oxide production in the cardiovascular system. There is no drug treatment which works for this, but by reducing the amount of protein high in phenylalanine, increasing natural folate in my diet, and supplementing with nonessential amino acids further down the chain reaction in neurotransmitter production such as tyrosine or 5-htp i have been able to feel better than i have any other time in my life. However it saddens me that i didn't know sooner. Theres a lot goin on upstairs now, behaviors, lost opportunities, addictions, etc. and still no real fix. This cannot be meditated away, but i have accepted it long before i figured how to help myself. But ultimately i have given up the prospect of living a normal life. Oh well.

***** At least you received a diagnosis and pinpointed the exact issue. Many people do not know why they are they way they are. Take it one day at a time, you'll be fine.
@i1-L22Belarus9 жыл бұрын
I did not receive a diagnosis and i am not receiving any medical help or compensation through social security. I had an ancestry report i paid for and ran it through a health database which caught the mutation. It is likely i will suffer from dystonia, fibromyalgia, or parkinson's disease symptoms in the future as well as cardiovascular disease due to my body not manufacturing dopamine in adequate supply along with the neurotoxicity of non traditional PKU. Physicians in the united states do not diagnose or treat by this method of batch genetic testing yet. They do not honor it. In fact the FDA is trying to stop commercial genetic research from sharing known information with customers. I cannot take this data to a doctor and receive treatment. Insurance companies would love to reconfigure qualifications and disqualifications if it were admissible. There are medications available such as levadopa which would be beneficial to me. Tryptophan is safer than 5-htp as a serotonin precursor, but has been banned by the FDA. 5-htp can cause hardening of heart valve tissue because it converts to serotonin to readily. I have my grievances. There is no ease in living, no compensatory factor, no mercy. I just get drunk and try to stay positive while i bottle my emotions and hatred for the world. It wont be ok in the end.

Some of us were exposed to a much greater pain after childbirth during our entire childhood which has resulted in a fucked up adulthood. It is called being raised in a dysfunctional family. If you do not know what that is or how it impacts us as adults, please do some google research on it. People with addictions were raised in a dysfunctional family, just like their parents, their grand parents, ect. This is why addictions run in families. I used to think there was such a thing as an "addiction gene" but after learning how dysfunctional families work, I now know that is is just a RESULT of being raised in a harmful environment. Dysfunction has a range from mild to severe abuse. The more severe the abuse, the more fucked up you will be as an adult. Addictions can be drugs, sex, alcohol, smoking cigs, gambling, but it also can be what is known as being in a co-dependent relationship (google it!). Here is an example: I was raised in a dysfunctional family because my mom was a chain smoking narcissist. Her father was an alcoholic and her mom was dependent on him. Her grandfather also drank. My mom's sister died from drug overdose. My mom's brother is a food addict. I was a food addict for a long time but have had addiction transference and now I drink alcohol everyday. I have a sister who doesnt do ANY drugs or drinking, but she is with an alcoholic who treats her like the dirt under the doormat, and she is dependent on him. HE is her addiction. This is a consistent representation of generations of family dysfunction. I am not a "happy" person in general and I used to take whatever pills I needed to in order to not cry everyday but hated the side effects and stopped taking any pills and just accept never being happy. I live in WA where pot is legal so I tried some pot edibles recently and they made me feel like everything was ok. No more negative feelings, no more road rage, no anger, no sadness. It was 100 times better than zoloft or caffeine with NO side effects (but you have to keep taking it or the depression returns).

I know that you guys want to be reasonable saying medication can be necessary and helpful and I can't be sure whether it's true. But my experience very clearly suggests that medication can only numb the pain and it's also very addictive, i.e. it's really difficult to get off of it. I would personally never recommend it but I might not have seen a very severe case depression (having been withdrawn from life for a very long time, involved in serious self-harming activities, entertaining suicidal thoughts over and over again). I did go on meds a few times but it NEVER brought any change except numbness and perhaps allowing me to resume some daily life activities but this effect didn't last long.
@plasmichoneytrip8 жыл бұрын
Anybody can undergo depression at some point in their life but i guess the threshold of coping or dealing with it depends on our environment and how we were trained to handle anxiety-inducing behaviour since we were young. I can see a lot of kids going through depression even if they have "everything". On the other end of the spectrum are kids that are happy even without much in life. In fact, i have observed that there are more reports of depression to suicide in rich countries compared to "third-world" countries. I guess it is all about how our coping mechanisms in life were developed since our formative years. Although i don't discount individual and genetic factors, I believe it is largely cultural or environmental.

That's why I no longer feel so sorry for poor countries. Often they have things we don't, like closer families, cleaner food/crops without GMO and poisons, so they are healthier. Lucky people are not sensitive to it, so will never understand what the rest of us go through.

From that dude's tats and earings, I can certainly tell that he 'speaks from his heart' and not his head. :) Well, here is the truth about depression (hint: You won't hear this from your average counselor.): It ain't all that bad. That's right, depression isn't all that bad. It's nature's way of saying, ,"Hey, slow down! Maybe now is the time to really think about things. Something is really screwed up here, so maybe you should think deeply on it before you go out and do something really stupid." That's right--SOMETIMES it is actually better to be depressed. For example, it might be better for a guy to become depressed when he discovers his wife is cheating on him than it would be for him to introduce her to the business end of a shotgun. Every emotion is a signal. In the case of depression, the message is, "Stop, and take the time you need to think." The real question I would put to the depressed person is, "Are you thinking deeply and honestly enough?"

Depression is complex, with many causes. There is no one cause, no one solution. Everyone's mental illness is different. Got depression or feeling continual anxiety? See a GP as soon as you can. If you don't have good GP, shop around until you do. You _may_ need medicinal support to stabilise you while you tackle your problems with PROFESSIONAL psychological counselling (talk-therapy) or psychiatric help. You may not need medicinal help. (Keep in mind that if you are depressed, you are probably not the best judge of what you need...) But whatever you do, don't take medical advice from some random person on the web, some pusher of religion or some pusher of "alternative" practices or mystical mumbo-jumbo. See a PROFESSIONAL, get PROFESSIONAL help. AVOID people who want to blame you for being depressed. You probably get enough blame in your head already... AVOID people who tell you to "get over it" or that depression is just a state of mind. Don't take advice from people who think that depression is just being "sad" or that depression is just another fad, on par with gluten-free diets. AVOID people who rabbit on about the benefits of "suffering" and the "role of depression". AVOID people who want to push their pet belief system (Christianity, Buddhism, veganism, whateverism) on to you as some kind of "cure" for your depression. AVOID people who _only_ want to give you drugs for your condition, without any consideration of the underlying causes or your problems in life. AVOID people who only want to _talk_ to you about your condition; people who flat-out refuse to consider the merits of anti-depressant medications. Especially avoid people who have an ideological axe to grind against "Big Pharma". You don't need zealots giving you profound medical advice. AVOID people who talk about being "healed". You may not be able to be "healed" of your depression or other mental illness. BUT, you may be able to live with what you have, and you may be able to improve the quality of your life, with help. "Healing" is a common term in pseudo-science circles (see: naturopathy), but try to think of improvements rather than "fixes". AVOID people who say that depression is just about diet, particularly those people who promote a particular diet or flavour of the month dietary fad. (Are these people medical or scientific professionals?) Diet is very important, but it's only one element. If you're Australian, go to beyondblue.org.au.

Being told that you don't know what you need, and that someone with a medical degree automatically knows better, is one of the deadliest things that you can believe. Especially here in America. 225,000 deaths per year have iatrogenic causes. I have had to deal with depression in my life, and I know first hand that a person with depression is ABSOLUTELY still capable of researching and questioning medical advice and deciding what treatment to, or not to pursue for themselves. I have worked in healthcare for 20 years and many times, a nurses or physician's belief in your reported symptoms is going to be based on a snap judgement made on the basis of your history and appearance, that will be made in the first 3 minutes of your 15 minute appointment with your GP. Take medical advice, along with any advice, as just that ADVICE, not gospel truth. "Listen to your intuition and stand up for what you know deep down that you need" is going to minimally, statistically, be more beneficial.
@showorker8 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you said and love how concise and easy to follow the advice is. I do think it would be more effective to say "You will run into people in your life who will say..." as opposed to saying to avoid them. The idea of avoidance can create more stress, because there is always grey area involved and other things to consider when dealing with these concerns. How do we know who to avoid? What if a good friend is having a bad day and falls into one of these roles? Time to nix them? Saying to avoid people is like saying to avoid air. You'll run into people that are just gonna rub you the wrong way, whether it's someone on the street, a sibling or a long-time friend. And that's GREAT actually, because they teach you how to overcome uncomfortable situations with grace. They can be the best teachers. Now, of course if someone is really out for you, and really hell bent on telling you what works best- pulling away from them may be best. But first, make sure to have used that inner strength you're learning about in therapy, and stand up for yourself. Educate them! It's a great opportunity to help them realize their comments aren't helping you at the moment. Let's BUILD connection, not avoid it. Make it a win-win situation.
@showorker8 жыл бұрын
I wish I had come across this comment at age 19 when I was first given anti-depressants. At the time, I thought it WAS gospel to listen to the doctor. Then followed years of being overmedicated, feeling even worse due to side effects, and lots of anger and frustration.

"Depression is complex. Don't listen to anyone but me and who I tell you to listen to." Except this is basically what everyone else, including the list of people not to listen to will tell you. Makes me wonder if half of depression is having to hear so much conflicting certainty from so many people who aren't actually living your life or don't have depression.

JP I like that metaphor... what wants to come out?

But doesn't this kind of personal responsibility require positive effort on the part of the depressed? Isn't that discriminatory to those that are lazy? What about those that just want to be accepted for the fact that they were born deppresed? Shouldn't the depressed have a right to an equal outcome comparable to the non-depressed?

How to heal depression? Go to a psychiatrist ...
@jameseverett49767 жыл бұрын
Of course. Easy. That's why depression is so rare now: because we have psychiatrists who can cure it. Got cancer? Go to a doctor. Too fat? Get a diet book. Need good advice? Buy a self help book. Marriage in trouble? See a marriage counselor. Problems, anxiety, suicide, divorce, crime, war, disease, etc. are now at an all-time low because we have solutions.

Hi good new information in new scientist magazine this month regarding depression! Re Inflammation. New studies show could be treated with antiinflammatory drugs as used for Chron's disease. Check it out on google.

metaphysics anyone? There are a lot of anti-inflammatory foods as well. Foods high in healthy omega-3's like fish and nuts (not peanuts). Also, preliminary research has shown that turmeric as an anti-inflammatory can be almost as effective as pharmaceuticals of this type.

No one should be poisoned with pharmaceuticals before doing traditional yoga 2-3 times a week. Abstain from all intoxicants, Intense group exercise classes 3 times per week. Sunshine daily. Natural circadian rhythm means no artificial light after sunset and sleep at night, end toxic abusive relationships and environments, creative socially engaging activities like playing instrument or sport, meditation, financial empowerment through a job. Organic whole food plant based diet. Supportive inclusive friendships. Being taught or learning skills you want/need. Mentors to assist with skill acquirement. How many people on happy pills can say they were doing all these for three months minimum before being medicated? Neither of you guys are qualified to promote psychotropic pharmaceuticals on a youtube video, no matter how softly spoken and caring you sound.
