Is your daughter experiencing depression? Teen depression is a big concern and if you've noticed signs and symptoms in your child, never take it lightly. Let's do everything to assist our children. As a dad and a psychologist, here are three rules that I have learned to be very useful:
1. Put your own mask on first
2. Listen listen listen
3. You have responsibilities
Watch and Enjoy!

I’m a teenage girl and struggle with depression, I wish my parents were proactive like this. I’m watching this for the sake of my future children, I never want them to have to deal with their mental illness alone like I have.

I’m a 19 year old mom who’s struggling with depression since about 14 years old, and trying to figure out how to explain this to my parents without sounding like “I need special attention or treatment” has been the nightmare I’ve been dealing with and I’m prepared to deal with if it comes to a time my daughter will need me

My beautiful daughter that's now an adult went through alot in the wonderful teen years. I'm not going to go into details about this, however, I almost lost her. The biggest thing I learned is I had to grow thick skin. I told my daughter I love you I'm always going to fight for you and I will walk through hell and back for you. The most important things I learned was patience, persistents and if one thing didn't work we worked to find another way that would. Time is everything and nothing would stop me from getting my girl in a better place. She also had to come to terms within herself. I remember telling her I can't change this, but I can support you and help you find a better way. One conversation we had was she told me "you don't understand ".. I was sad and offended by thar comment bc all I did was try to understand. Then I realized she's right! I don't understand, but I could do everything In my power to make sure she's safe and know she is loved. I told her and this is very important to all the young woman and young men commenting on this.. this moment WILL pass. This is only the here and now. This is 90% YOU (how you make it, what you choose to learn from it).. 10% EVERYONE ELSE. it makes my heart break when I think about all the teens going through this, bc they don't know how to get help, they feel their feelings are invalid or not important enough. And Noone will care or listen. But please don't let the here and now distract you from your beautiful future. Things may seem too much to handle rn. Maybe they are but this will pass. You will be ok!.OK!.. just don't give up on YOU!

Thank you. My daughter has gotten to the point where she isn't leaving the house. She's online all day, not doing her school work (homeschooling this summer). She doesn't want to talk when I try to bring it up. She doesn't even go to the psychiatrist or therapist anymore. I don't know what to do. I don't want to push too much because of her history, but at the same time I feel like i'm just allowing her to waste away. Not sure if any other parent has/is experiencing this. If anyone has any ideas, I'm here for it.

There are other parents experiencing this, Rosa VR. I know one of them. You might consider cutting the internet and getting more testing done. Try to find some forums to interact with people who are dealing with this type of behavior.

Hi Rosa, Sorry about your daughter. We are going through the same thing with our seventeen year old daughter. Now, she is enrolling in a cyber school program almost a month ago. She started orientation for two hours and stopped because she is having difficulty focusing. I have reached out to the school for support and guidance. At this point, she has refused to seek any help. We have reached out to our community mental Agency for help. They reached out to her and came by the house and she has refused to see them or speak to the counselor.

I am a victim of physical and emotional abuse from my parents. And because of that i have not had a normal type of growing up that normal healthy kids have... I have developed anxiety, self harming tendencies PTSD and most specially depression and ive had them for 8 years now. Please do not be like my parents. Do not do the same to your children. They are so cold and cruel torwards me. Please learn how to be patient with your kids. Especially at these times. Suicide is a very real thing and i know how painful it is to go through. I know this because i have countless suicide attempts and i do not think it would be stopping. I do not see myself live past 20 anymore. I am 20 as of the moment. But i do not see myself living past this age anymore. Please, learn how to comfort your child, like you would to a crying baby. We are just afraid. And fear can make us do something we dont really intend to. Also we are in pain. Learn more about depression and please please be patient with your child. Do not wait for them to take action on ending their lives. Act now before its to late. Empathy, comfort, patience, support and warmth can really help immensely with the emotional pain they feel inside. You do not need to do something drastic. Sometimes just being with them, in silence, crying with them, empathising what they feel, understanding and reassuring them that "everything will be alright" gives comfort. I hope this could help in a way... Please save them. Its not too late.

You're right, dr Paul, absolutely. It takes plenty of time and effort to win your child's trust. The most challenging part for me is to hold on to the "mask" and stay tuned instead of giving immediate advice. Teenagers hate lectures, especially starting with 'If I were you...' or 'When I was at your age...'. Thank you for your great reminders and suggestions.

We are in this right now with my 14yo son. He has completely imploded in the last 14 days, withdrawn from everything barely leaving his bed. Pediatrician & therapist involved. No ahaha moments or path for resolution in sight. Those who say to me, having a highly gifted child must be a breeze, have NO idea. Not a journey I would have chosen. The road seems windy and viewless. It’s affecting the entire family. We’re working on your 3 rules. # 1 is by far the hardest.

There’s nothing worse than being depressed and seeing how it makes other people feel around you. You just feel like a giant burden and if you get the feeling your parents or partner is frustrated and impatient, it just makes those negative emotions so much worse. I’m glad you are trying to be patient and are willing to change for your daughter. ❤ I hope she starts doing better. If she knows you are patient and understanding and willing to listen, then she’ll see she’s loved and it will help. ❤

Mika Alone Forever, this is an unfortunate situation. I believe that every person should have healthy self-esteem, despite what others think of them or say to them. Easier said than done, I know. We have some videos on the channel to help you with that. We have a couple playlists that might benefit you: "Just for kids and teens" - kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPCicx6xcJ5ZJzVe9UBlRTQV (Check out "How To Convince Your Parents To Get You A Phone," that has been found to be very beneficial.) "Positive Personal Development" - kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPCYtqYUCuzsyYpAlzKZDVVV Some specific videos you might want to check out: "How To Boost Self Esteem" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5LTgp2dZ9Vqbc0 "Overcoming Low Self Esteem" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWfclqJ6q6qFrac "How To Deal With Depression On Your Own" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJunhHieard7q8k "How To Beat Depression Naturally | 5 Strategies" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2fPh6t9mKaEj5Y My final suggestion is try talking with a trusted adult about your situation. Either a grandparent, teacher, or school counselor. There are people who would love to help you if you ask. Best wishes.

I wish she would have said something sooner, but now that I know, your video has definitely helped me with some initial steps.

I I am going through great struggles with my 15-year-old daughter right now. Everything has seem fine up until this year. This year she attempted suicide, stole alcohol from one of her friends parents, has been stealing electronics and talking to older men online from all over the world and lies constantly. She manipulates her little brothers and sisters to doing things that she wants them to do and I have not done a great job about not freaking out. The main thing that bothers me is that she is hurting her little brothers and sisters and manipulating them into being a part of her scheme. Her behavior is been like a cancer in her house that is not only hurting her. Thank you for your video

Doc. All this is REAL. WHAT do you do when you are not the custodial parent . Everything's great...and they return home, to a mega onslaught of parental alienation...and the next time you talk...the kids having a negative critical internal dialogue, which drowns herself and you out, and it's an unreal tongue lashing in which she repeatedly hits and runs...with stuff the step parent and other parent are overloading her with! I am not even talking to her, or with her, but listening to parental alienators channelling through her ..she does not know what or why she is saying what she is...but that residual negativity is there, and coz she is trauma bonded to them:(

@@LiveOnPurposeTV she has just turned 17, but when turned inside out is a volatile 11. The other one is 16. The 16 year old is extremely anxious avoidant. She will bury her head in the sand or otherwise "disappear" just in case there may be discussions, which she is frightened of, because she sees it as 'arguing'. The 17 year old, if she perceives that there may be a discussion, she sees that as an "attack", and weighs up what "might" be said, and rushes into an onslaught which is disproportionate. I really feel for both of them. Thx

Thanks for the tips.. drowning a bit but that, 'no freak out rule', is in the forefront.. at present I am struggling with what to say and do with the lockdown that has been in place since June and my daughters refusal to go outside. We have a rooftop terrace and Spring has begun but she just refuses to leave her room… she's never been a recluse like this before, the fear mongering in the media is a contributing factor but there is also trauma so I'm gentle and loving. I just don't seem to say the right words to her as she ends up pulling the doona up over her head and says she is too tired or depressed or angry and so I give her space. Should I give her ultimatums, maybe lay the law down, feels like lockdown is enabling a deeper sense of detachment.. whats the best thing to do, I'm not sure.. I don't want to trigger her but it also breaks my heart seeing her hideaway so much.
