I was doing a lot of rewards based positive parenting but had to stop when 4 y.o. asked one day "What will I get?" to my request to have him help with something. I want my kids to help with things for more than greed/ego reasons. Ugh. Raising decent, competent, co-operative adults is so challenging!!!

I was looking up videos to help myself, my son, and my daughter in law, ( we all live together and I take care of my grandson while they are working) work together to try and understand my grandson’s defiance and lying constantly. (he is 7 1/2) While I really feel it is attention seeking, you can never be 100% sure. I am definitely guilty of the “ Why did you do that?” Or “Why did you lie about that?” So many descriptions and scenarios you have spoken about in the few videos I have watched so far have been so on point, it was as if you were talking about us. I am excited to share these videos with my children so we can learn about the best way to work together to relieve the tension and stress in ourselves as well as my grandson. I can’t wait to take these first steps moving forward towards a bright and cheerful future.Thank you so much for these fantastic videos!

Donna Mellow, I am glad you are all working on this together, that is awesome.
@rayb.63453 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, my 5 year old just went threw this and come to find out she has been bullied at school and didn’t know how to express herself. A lot of her lying came from her not being able to decipher between what really happened, what she thinks might happen and what she wants to happen. Once we explained the difference between those thought processes, the lying dramatically decreased. Also, If I felt as if she was lying I would say she could tell me the truth with no consequences. I don’t use punishment, the word, because I think it’s damaging psychologically. But choices have consequences, whether positive or negative, so my daughter feels better to express herself if it’s a time of no consequence, We also found a child psychologist who did online sessions and that helped a lot because she had somebody positive believing in her and being calm. Based on my experience, something might be going on with your grandson that he can’t process very well at a young age. Having him draw out a problem he is having or something he wants to talk about or something he is scared of of something he wants to do every day for awhile might be a great idea as well a child psychologist. Having a picture to discuss while you give hugs and cuddles and problem solving together should help. Jesus bless, I hope this helps ❤️

@@rayb.6345 your contribution is wonderfully helpful. Awareness of experiences the child is exposed to is insightful and so, so eye-opening. Having the child draw pictures...or even color (what crayon colors they choose, the pressure exerted on the crayon, etc) is another avenue for the child to express their feelings without words. Many, many Thank Yous...💞💕💞

I absolutely love all your videos!! thanks so much for your wisdom!!! We have been waiting forever to get into a good family therapist.. It is just so nice to kind of have one with the show. I really think a lot of our family issues can be solved with good parenting by consistently using these tools. I have a very active 5 year old boy that I have used that one method for bedtime when I tell him "if you want the door open you need to be laying in bed quietly, but if I hear you making noises I'm going to close the door. Before using this method he would be very disruptive to his 15 month old little sister trying to sleep in her crib in the next room over and also to his 10 year old brother who he shares a room with. Since using this method he stays in bed quietly and falls asleep on his own and I really just can't thank you enough! I never thought it could be so simple!!!!

I believe there are multiple ways to change behavior, including modeling, practicing the good behavior in a safe environment, experiencing natural consequences, and persuasion, and that punishment (causing something unpleasant so they won't do it again) shouldn't be used on anyone we love (which should be everyone). Many respectable, responsible, kind adults today have been raised without punishment. They learned in the other ways.

Since "positive" and "negative" can be confusing, I recommend using "adding" and "removing". It's more straightforward to talk about an adding or removing punishment or an adding or removing reward. It doesn't have the connotations of good and bad that positive and negative have. Thanks for the videos!

When my kids do positive things I started giving them a tick✔️ on a plane paper, and a ❌ for undesired behavior; at the end of the day we count the ticks. Even having a single tick was so powerful even for the baby too and the cross was so hurting that proved to be a positive reinforcement. It worked. More ticks means rewards.

With my 4 year old son, one other way which has worked so far is ‘3 times rule’ If for ex he misbehaves/ shouts, 1st I calmly, assert his misbehaviour, follow the same terminology like ‘bad manners’ 2nd if he does - warm him again, also tell him consequence in case if he misbehaved again 3rd time if he did, calmly follow what is told to him, like put him in thinking cot for 5 mins to think about his behaviour. This is not suitable in all cases, for relevant ones it has worked wonders

I just got in trouble tonight and couldn’t go to sleep because I was angry and started watching videos about parenting to figure out what exactly she did and why and now I know 😂. She gave me an essay to write about what helpfulness and gratefulness are and what they mean, which would be positive punishment, because I very much don’t want to write this essay. Unfortunately, she combined it with negative punishment because she gave it to me tonight and it has to be done by 10 tomorrow (I’m going somewhere) taking away my sleep so I can get up and write it, and I very much want my sleep.

I used to have my children 2 girls and their cousins 2 girls over alot and during sleepovers I would say 1st one asleep when I check in gets a treat under their pillow...it might be candy but I would also use mom bucks or a written reward ie +10 mins of playground time at the park... That worked well for me

I have a child with ADHD and ODD. I try to offer things like "If you do such and such we will get ice cream" and he (5 years old) normally responds, "I don't want ice cream." This is just one example. It almost seems impossible to give him any reward or take away anything without him saying "I don't want (blank)" -especially when it comes to toys or his favorite TV show. I just don't know what to do about this. I will try the baggie idea, that might hold weight if he can constantly see his goal. If you have any other videos that deal directly with this, please let me know. I have seen many of your ODD videos, but particularly looking for parent training.

Tim Perry, finding the motivation may be harder than some kids. What motivates him? What does he get excited about? I had one mother who gave her child "chips" that could be turned in for time playing a game.

Tim, look into PCIT for adhd and odd. It works amazingly well. Stands for “Parent Child Interaction Therapy” and administered by a clinical psychologist.

It's the same take away every time, "if you..., no time on the tablet". 'Family member' heard me say this and said, "its sad you have to use that to get him to do something". My response was, "well it works". 'family member' or i like electronic time (for me, an certain amount of time is ok). Also, child says, "he takes care of me, he loves me... because he lets me play on my game".. which has evidently caused a riff between child and I :(

Sounds like you are doing this correctly. It would be best if Grampie would be supportive.

My son is not so easy, he was absolutely not the guy you can apply any of this. If I give anything, he expects it, he gets lazier, if he gets things taken away, he is monsterous, and he has learned to avoid letting me parent him, he only gives me a happy side if he randomly wants to. I never spanked, since he was not out of line, he actually was so tricky he could ignore me and I was not willing to give him spankings, and if he was put in his room, he made his room fun. If he was mis behaving like went out of sight when we said stay here camping. I was worried he was dead, or abducted. When I went to the river at the bottom of a cliff, he was waist high in strong current with older kids fishing. He was so excited to be learning that, and I marched him up the cliff, explained he was not to leave like that, he didn't listen, and it was wrong because one of us needs to be with him for his safety. I zipped him in a tent and stayed outside it, and packed up the campsite saying he was not staying and camping was ove, and he was 6. I don't think he learned anything. He seems pathalogical. No shame and all bluster. He lives at another house whenever I say no. Just doesn't come home. I am a sole parent. And had him on my own. He makes everything he wants to not do, something he can blame me for. He is gifted but always uses coersion and manipulation instead of honesty. He was so smart as a toddler, I feel like day care made him like this to get needs met. He went to 4 different day cares, and he started kindergarden already ahead of the class and dissapointed at how boring it was, he is so charming and sweet, but irrational, and his ideas were so far out that I couldn't help with. He built two robots at 5 years old on the way home in the car, then combined them as soon as we got home. The instructions were in the box still. I feel bad for him because school has been negative and he has the highest test scores. He only liked AP physics at 15, and never studied but had the highest grade, biology too. I can't figure out, do you force him to suffer or indulge him. There is no middle ground. Luckily he loves friends and has joined with some in a band to write music, and sing. And he rows on a huge team, that gave him direction, so now, he might row for Princeton or Yale, he became the fastest and is built for the sport, that too is an anomoly, because you can't buy these attributes. Princeton's coach has been pursuing him and that of all places has the best physics program for my son. Anyway its about you!! I listen to your videos, they help a lot, but nothing is quite explaining how to parent a kid like mine. And if it sounds over the top, if you look for my son's name, some day, he'll be a known figure in some out of the box accomplishment, or career, and those kind of people, I am positive, are breaking the mold. Like Elon Musk or Albert Einstein. Everyone else, falls into line with your teachings, lol! Hope he gets over my inadequate parenting skills someday, would be nice to have a relationshop, not required, just maybe fun is all.

siri backer, thank you for watching - I am honored to be on your positive parenting journey with you. You are not inadequate. You are the best mom for your son. You are doing the best you can with the knowledge and resources you have; I truly believe that. Your son may be dealing with some things a little outside the norm, however I still want to offer a free 25 minute parenting breakthrough call with one of our Live On Purpose coaches. If that sounds interesting to you, please go here to schedule: DrPaulJenkins.com/breakthroughcall

Dr Paul, All of your advice seems fantastic but when I apply it to my 2 year old, who is an extremely strong-willed child, it falls short. Have you done a video that could help me with her?
@LiveOnPurposeTV5 жыл бұрын
Check out the videos on the parenting playlist, Jonette Cornelius, there are several videos there targeted to younger children. If the child is strong-willed, you will have to be consistent and follow through every time, It will take longer with this type of child.

Dr Paul, thank you for these wonderful parenting videos! So helpful, easy to understand and effective. I was wondering if you could do a video segment on small children, toddlers, hitting themselves in affect? My 3 year old does not hit anyone else, nor does she hit things, however she hits/scratches, pinches/pulls really hard etc. herself whenever she is upset! Basically she self-harms and hurts herself as a coping mechanism. Why is this and how can I help her learn another skill to release her strong emotions. Thank you SO much!

This is really helpful! I was wondering though, how are we going to teach them the difference between wrong and right, so that when they grow up they’ll make the right choices for the right reasons?
@LiveOnPurposeTV3 жыл бұрын
Danai Pr, consequences. It is what the real world uses. If you do something against the law you can get a ticket or arrested. In kids lives, we give consequences AND we try to turn them into LEARNING opportunities. The legal system punishes, we use the consequences and help the kids to understand what they should learn from the experience.

If a child is having difficulty with something, say teasing their sibling. You see them do something kind, you give them an extra privilege and tell them it is for their kindness.
