A lot of people wonder why you take the total hem amount and cut this number in half. If I fold up 1" and sew at the top, it's 1" on the front and 1" on the back, meaning I'm eventually cutting off a total of 2" from the bottom of the pants. If your still unsure, pin your hem and try them on before sewing and cutting, this way it'll turn out perfectly. Sorry for the confusion and I hope this helps.

I feel like this only works if you know the quantity you want taken off. If instead, you've flipped up the cuff to what you want the new length to be, I think at 1:45 you have to measure to include the hem as well, divide that number by two, and sew the cuff at that length. Otherwise, you'll end up with pants that are slightly too long (the length of the hem, ~1/2") each time. For example, my pants are 30" total and I try them on and roll the cuff up to where I want the new hem. Now they're 26" pants. I'm taking off 4", but the hem is 1/2" so the part you 're saying to measure (and the length you're taking off) would only be 3.5", leaving the pants at 26.5".

@@bgclarinet I am 5'2" & I decided to start hemming my own jeans to save money. I did 4 pairs of jeans using this method of measurement & although I'd rather have my jeans too long vs too short, all 4 pairs were 1/2" longer than I wanted them to be. You can still use this method to measure but instead of pinning it at 1" like she did, add the hem measurement amount (in my case it was 1/2") to that halved number. In this case, 1/2" + 1" = 1.5" so pin @ 1.5" - Perfect every time.

BG Clarinet below commented that after you fold back the cuff to the desired fit length you should "include the original hem when measuring" from the bottom edge and before dividing by 2 to determine the material to be shortened out. After trying your method and hers I believe she is correct (try it with a strip of paper pretending it's a pants leg to convince yourself). If you do not include the hem in the measurement, your pants will be too long by the length of the original hem, and especially noticeable if the original hem is very wide. Nonetheless you have a very nice, informative video!

Excellent tutorial...I did the jeans for my neighbours husband...after a false start...I didn't halve the measure and realised before I cut them they looked too short so watched the video again. I needed to take the up 7cm. I measured and pinned 7cm but of course sewing them against the hem line I had double that. Unpicked them ...did the turn up 3.5 cm and they fitted perfectly. I didn't cut the excess off as he liked the strength and neatness of the finished work. I just sewed up each side of the overlap inside the sides of the leg you can't see they were taken up at all.

In already using a denim needle & thread, attach your machine's leveling presser foot to glide over the 3 layer bulky hem. Its the presser foot w/a black push button on the left side. It is far easier to sew garments correctly. Shortcuts are often sloppy or have too many time consuming steps! Distressing can be easily done w/bleach mixed w/lots of water ...

Your machine should come with 2 if they are fixed. 2. A Denim needle is size 16 (or 18) - they make a huge difference when sewing thick fabrics like denim.

i am a professional tailor and i hate doing this to jeans. its to much weight around your leg. also the reason u get rippled look on the hem is the heavy 100% cotton thread shrinks when they fade wash them at the manufacture. id u just cut them hem them with heavy 100% cotton thread that look comes back after a few washes. also no need to hand tack that fabric up there. just sew in the ditch from the right side. u will never know its there. 😉

I have watched a few videos on “keeping the original hem”. Your’s is the easiest one to use. The other videos folded from the outside not the inside. Also appreciate the tips with the zipper foot.

Hi there, Could you explain why you started with a 2" fold then you halfed that to a 1" fold please?
@stepholiver69815 жыл бұрын
nw8000 because the fabric is folded over, it is doubled, so if you don’t halve it, you’ll shorten them twice as much as you want 🙂

I was wondering about that as well, always helps to view the comment section. Now to give this a shot, my boyfriend will either have perfectly hemmed pants or NOT. THANKS I think.

nw8000 Simple! The fabric was doubled.

Just used this technique on my favourite stretch skinny jeans, by hand, using a white correction pen to mark the half-way point to make the new fold. I'm so happy, they've turned out perfect, thank you. I had to keep the fabric stretched out taut as I sewed along the seam by hand, doing what I think is called a 'back stitch' then cut off the excess. Brilliant result.

Thank you very much for this detailed video. I've never hemmed anything before and I have a denim apron that was too long for me. These instructions worked perfectly. The only thing that wasn't mentioned was switching the presser foot back to regular for the zigzag stitch so I had to rewind and watch again that you were using a different foot. Thanks again!!

There is a far simpler way of doing this.... hem your jeans as normal, then distress the new hem by pinching small amounts of the fabric between your finger and thumb and lightly scuff the denim with a nail file, the glasspaper/sandpaper type,... it takes less than 10 mins to do, ... i will challenge anyone who thinks they can tell the difference.... job done ...lol :)
@elenacallegari29336 жыл бұрын
i agree. your method is way easier and looks better. the method shown in the video instead creates such a thick hem that prevents the fabric from falling and folding as it normally would and the end result is a stiff denim cilinder around your shoes that doesn't look good at all

Have watched several videos on hemming jeans while keeping the original hem and this is the best one by miles. and all options are explained very well. Thanks for a super instruction video and also no loud music screaming in the background which seems to be the trend on so many instruction videos.

With your method of measuring, you end up with your jeans, longer, by the depth of the original hem. If you first, fold it up further, the full depth of the original hem, and continued with your method, it would work. In other words, you should have first measured to the very bottom edge of the leg, which is the total length you want to remove, then divide it in half, measure that amount, as you did, from the top of the hem. Admittedly, most people don't notice 1/2", but some people are pretty picky about their length. Not easy to redo this method.

If you turn that pant leg wrong side out, you will be able to slip it over your free are and stitching will be much easier. Also, there is a "denim" color thread by Coats & Clark that blends very well with most jeans?
@kandacek635 жыл бұрын
You would think so. In fact there is another video out there that does that very thing. I tried it and my jeans came out as high water pants. I ripped it out and tried again. Same result though not quite as drastic. I knew I had seen this video before so once I found it again I applied it to my jeans and they came out perfect. I’m not sure how it works, but it does. I trimmed away the excess once I was absolutely sure I was happy. Then I ran another layer of top stitch. They are a dark wash so you can’t even tell they’ve been hemmed that way unless you actually go looking. I’m getting ready to do a set of my husband’s old jeans this way.

I love this method but also ended up with longer jeans than I wanted when I folded them up and tried the pants on in front of the mirror. this is because when you fold the pants leg up to the desired length but then don't measure from the very top of the hem to the bottom, you will not be accounting for that 1/2" (or full inch for me) of the original hem that will be gained back once you fold back down the original hem.

Excellent. Matching the color of the thread to the color of the jeans is very important. What is even more important is to be able to sew like the one shown in this video.
