How to Hem the Sleeves on Ladies Lined Jacket without a Vent

In this video I will show you how to hem the sleeve length on a Ladies lined jacket with no vent.
Note that I had the client try on the jacket lining being 1/4 inch shorter before I cut it off. This still left enough slack to expand for comfort. Remember to always try on something before you cut excess fabric off when doing alterations.

After searching for some time, this is still the BEST video on shortening a lined sleeve. I only wish I knew how much excess fabric above the hemline to remove when shortening more than a small amount.

No one ever taught me to sew, learned over the years by trial and error. I can tailor a mens suit, but I suck at alterations like this because I would work in reverse of how the sleeve was put together! The internet is a great place to find out the easy way. Thanks for the video.

It is customary to leave the lining slightly longer. I this case there was too much length in the lining, so I trimmed off about an 1/8th inch and that made if fit much better for the client to wear. I hope that clears up the original question you had. I am glad to hear that you found it helpful.

Quick question- if I need to shorten the sleeve one inch do I cut one inch off lining and one inch off fabric?
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 2 жыл бұрын
I cut equal on both to keep it the same as the manufacture did. If you need a bit more ease in the lining then cut less of off it. Only your client will know if the lining needs to be extended.

Would have liked to see you cut off the excess of the sleeve and lining. My favorite ripping tool is the razor blade I sink my needle in the opposite side of the garment and it gives me a third hand for ripping, moving the needle hold as I go LOL Also would love to see a jacket sleeve shortened with a vent I tried that once for a friend years ago and it was not my best work I am sure you could show us the correct way, if you already haven't :)

I thought I pressed the record button when I was cutting the sleeves out, but apparently I missed it. Basically, I just marked 1.25 inches for the jacket and 1.5 inches for the lining. I drew my lines using non wax black tailors chalk and simply cut along the lines. There are many great videos on here already that show how to hem a jacket with vents. Here is one of them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipCzmWNvmLSIZ9E

Leave the lining a bit longer. In this case the client only wanted 1/4 of an inch. I generally leave 1/2 to 3/4 depending on the size and style of the coat.

@@kevinsews - I cut both sleeve and lining the same length, 1st time I sewed sleeve and put jacket on the lining wound up being longer. I ripped out the stitches, cut 1/2" from the lining, sewed again and still had lining longer than the sleeve. Again ripped out stitches, cut lining another 1/2" and sewed and I swear the lining grew longer because it stuck out even further when I sewed it the 3rd time. I will rip out again tomorrow. I mean other than continuing to cut the lining 1/2" @ a time, what else could I try? I think when I put the jacket on it is pulling the lining forward through the sleeve (it is not tight on me). I totally get what you are doing in the video, just not understanding why I am having an issue with the lining still being longer than the sleeve now that it is at least 1" shorter than the sleeve itself. Thank you for a great video tutorial.
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 3 жыл бұрын
@@bafreshour I usually cut the exact same amount off the sleeve and lining and everything aligns perfectly. Remember that the lining needs a fold over too. If it is still too long then simply trim a little bit off at a time until it is the size you want. Obviously use a basting stitch so it will be easy to remove and recut.

Question: what is the math on the lining. You cut outer fabric sleeve and lining straight across so they are the same length. Mark and press outer jacket fabric lets say 1/2". How much do i cut or hem lining? Always confuses me 😅
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 11 ай бұрын
The general rule is the lining is always a bit longer than the sleeve. If this rule was followed by the manufacturer of the jacket then cut off the exact length off both the fabric and lining and you should be good. In my case with this one the client wanted a 1/4 inch more cut off the lining because she felt is was too long.

Kevin I opened a school letterman school jacket sleeve and body side, over the week, to sew football patches on the leather sleeve, the one that is wool body and leather sleeve, under the arm where the wool and leather meets. I am having problems getting the seam to line up perfect, it seems it is off at least 1/8 inch and does not line up when I stitch it, like maybe it is moving when stitching over it, I do not have a walking foot for my Singer 20U that I use to sew it, so that is not an option. I have tried it 3 times and it seems to be lined up and I even pin it but after stitching it is still off, I am hoping you have a magic fix for this I let this one go but I am not liking it. I am OCD and that is bothering me so much. I didn't want to try again as not to put too many stitch holes in the leather sleeve
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 5 жыл бұрын
My industrial machine I use for garments doesn't have a walking foot either. The key is how to hold the fabric. Do a search on "Sewing without pins" and you will find some that show the technique.

I addressed this. In this case the clients jacket had excess slake that she wanted removed. I chalk it up to it being produced in one of those fast fashion factories overseas. This is becoming more common on the things people bring in for alterations.
