Exposed pond liner edges do not look the prettiest... but there are several ways to hide them! Since I chose to not have shelves along my perimeter edge for maximum swimming space, saving money, time, and some extra safety around the edges, I came up with a DIY way to help cover and hide exposed pond liner edges! I go into various options people use to cover pond liner edges and then go into detail of how I made my DIY pond edge hider/filtration.
Material links:
I purchased and use the RPE 45 Mil BTL Liner (Link: btlliners.com)
The 1/2” pond/fish netting I use is from: www.pondandgardendepot.com/ne...
I also found heavy duty garden stakes/tent pegs on Amazon that I would purchase if I didn’t have my livestock fencing I tore up for my DIY stakes lol!

Oh thank you!! Yes I’m excited to see the growth and what continues to thrive... I think that’s part of the fun of it... having the surface area and planting area to be able to experiment with different plants being grown and fertilized through the pond... seeing what works best for your climate and area of the pond👍... it seems like constantly I’m doing experiments haha😂

Imo that’s a decent fix for a mistake in the design phase but I suspect it can turn into a nightmare a few years down the line when plants will get overgrown and need thinning. There was the space (as one can see at 12:32) for a narrow shelf all around the pond to grow plants in gravel. As a matter of fact I’ve seen a video of another swimming pond where they showed how such a shelf could be built. They even used a wooden board under the liner to create the raised side to keep the gravel in while minimizing the dimensions. Anyway thanks for posting. Useful to see what problems and solutions people have come up with before starting my own build.

You are welcome! Oh yes many options for pond builds for sure! So for my specific simple build In the spot I wanted, I purposely didn’t want the perimeter sides with the shelves but instead wanted more swim space with the bog filtration separate and raised waterfall instead of a main flat perimeter filtration. At a later point I came up with this to help hide the side pond liner while still not sacrificing swimming space. My personal taste is to plant and enjoy and see the plants along the perimeter instead of stacked rocks as it looks more of a natural pond to me … but everyone will have their tastes😊! To put shelves around the perimeter after the build already completed (like 12 minutes in like you stated) I would have to make the pond smaller as there is not enough liner in the trench for extra space to create a shelf and I would need to adjust my pond overflow pipe I’m sure. I love working my plants around the perimeter! You shouldnt let plants go and wait years to thin… wether in a bog or shelves around the pond or in my diy side perimeter planters… it’s part of a natural pond’s upkeep to remove dead foliage or non evergreen plants as it exists esp after the frosts or as their seasons ends 👍… it just makes upkeep so much easier if you stay on top of it. The benefit to the netting around the pond is it’s forgiving with the water level and adjustable and you can plant the plants higher or lower in the water depending on the type of plant as well as using the netting as a type of trellis for the vines. You can either cutoff any dead foliage from up top In Between the holes in the netting or unhook the top portion net to trim or remove. I do wish however I simply used the netting I purchased with larger holes all the way around the perimeter as the trampoline netting is such small holes… even though a lot of new growth find their way through the small existing holes or larger holes I created which is way cool. I hope your future pond works out awesome!!😊👍

Hi, you did a very good job! Congratulations! In only 13 min. video you gave me so many ideas, amzing! I live in south Germany, border with Switzerland. I bought a house here with a pond which was in a very bad shape. I am now cleaning it and redoing the edges for new plants. I am considering coconut matting, which I find suitable to hide de black liner, blending with the plants color. Would it stand the weight of the rocks along the years? Thanks for all the tips!

Thank you so much😃! Very encouraging knowing some of my material could help and give you some ideas!! Ah yes I too have researched and was interested in the coco mats!! I saw a pretty good size one at my local hydroponics store.. it was around $66 for a 4’x4’. I can’t remember the specifics but some where along my research I found that it might leach something into the water (again I can’t remember what it was or the valicity of the claim) so I was kind of weary… but the other main thing is it will be temporary … it will probably hold the rocks up initially but if it’s just coco mat I’d imagine the rocks and roots will just drop from the from the coco itself as it degrades. the lower netting of my side planters have attached to the liner and the roots are growing great ….Very sturdy planters ! If you do try coco mats or some other idea please keep me updated and let me know how it goes!! In my last video I use natural burlap along the perimeter edges of my floating planters… I love how it hides the black and cools off and waters the sides as the plants grown over it… but again I know the burlap won’t be permanent and that’s why I still have the shade clothe as my main planter support.👍

@@UnitedRanch Thanks for your prompt answer, full of great info. As I was removing the old plants and the gravel layer, I just found out that the edges have cocos matts underneath for more than 15 years. They were laid flat without an envelope of rocks and looked in pretty good shape after all those years. In my research, those nets can be made of jute or coconut fibers. Since I cannot work full time on this project, it will take me a while to report my progress. Surely I will keep you posted. Thanks again for so detailed and useful information! By the way, in which area are you located?

No way!! That crazy cool! 15 years?!? That’s such a long time for the coco Mat to still be in tact! I’ve just never experimented with the stuff! Haha oh yes I understand about not having much time… so just keep me in the loop if you have time and you remember😊👍

@@UnitedRanch Yes, it's a fact because I asked the previous owner about it. He told me that the pond was already there when he bought the house in 2008 and he never did any maintenance on it. So those coco mats were already there! It is a small pond, I just estimated its capacity which is about 2500 liters or aprox. 670 gallons.👍👌
