How To Hide Your Tummy - 18 Tips You Didn't Know
If you're anything like me you may have gained a few pounds over lockdown and while our isolation period here in New Zealand is over I thought it might be helpful to share some of my top styling tips to disguising a tummy. I know for most of us this isn't exactly going to be a top priority given what we are all facing in the world at the moment but I truly believe if you look good you feel good and that's why I've put together this video.
I'd really love to hear if you've put on any weight during lockdown and what your thoughts are about it. Do you care? Is it the least of your worries? Is the weight gain getting you down. I'd be fascinated to hear your thoughts.
Anyway, thanks so much for watching and I'm sending lots of love from New Zealand to you.
Leonie

Finally someone who doesn’t say that wrap dresses hide the tummy! I keep seeing this info everywhere and it just isn’t true. They emphasize your waist but you turn sideways and you see your tummy protruding. Thanks for the great tips!

I love everything you said and how you said it. My beautiful grandmother worked almost 50 years selling fine women’s clothing, and she always talked about the importance of “good foundation undergarments” and good posture! Grannie Lillian knew how to disguise a midsection, play to strengths (her gorgeous face and legs!), and use accessories to focus attention in the right places. I like to think she helped countless women look and feel better from the mid-1940s through the early 1990s. Thank you so much for doing the same with your lovely advice, and I am delighted I found you today! 💝🕊

Great tips, Leonie. I hated those low-rise pants we were forced to wear for 20 years. Not only did they make my belly pop over the top, but because I’m long-waisted, my BARE belly showed, too. I just never wore pants until high-waisted came back, they’re so much more flattering. You’re the best, keep the good stuff coming!

I love the advice about not ruling out shopping at plus size. In recent months, I've been really trying to find the perfect pair of jeans that I can tuck my shirt in and not be concious of my tummy. The current pair of jeans that I love has a stretchy waist band and so do maternity pants. Looking through Target maternity pants reviews, other nonpreggo ladies were buying maternity pants and love it! Never rule out some really good options!

Great advice! All of it. So good to see sensible, realistic advice for the tummied girls. I'm a NZ size 22/24 and have been for years so I think I've really developed the knack of dressing for my shape. Most advice you hear is rubbish, like the classic "go for empire styles" and "avoid prints". There is always an exception that disproves the rule and that would probably be my top tip - dont follow "the rules" but rather notice what actually enhances you, what makes you smile, do you feel confident, which colours make you glow? For myself my top tip is to be a bit 'quirky' not like Mimi from The Drew Carey show! But as a teenager I loved the whole punk vibe and as I've gotten older I've gravitated back to that type of look, but obviously updated and "age appropriate". For example I wear a lot of black and darker colours and I love my white Dr Marten shoes. I think this gives me a point of difference in todays Instagram culture where everyone tries so hard to conform to the latest trends. I dont buy Fast Fashion which has awful synthetic fabrics and the way they just size up a standard size pattern so that you end up with arm holes that gape and sleeves down to your knees doesnt flatter anyone! I buy local NZ designers like Euphoria and Lost And Led Astray so the fabrics are good quality, natural fibres and the patterns and styles are literally designed for the chubby Kiwi gal. It's all about less is more for me and I no longer buy an item of clothing unless I truly LOVE it.

Half tuck is the best thing they come up with, I do it with skits, jeans, and trousers. Now I really love the new voluminous dresses, now you have to be careful, usually looks best when your thinner. Puff sleeve dresses, brings your eyes up, I find those to be very nice, Great idea with the shorter jacket. I tend to reach for light weight kimono, love them. Horizontal lines look with the dress is great if it roughed in the tummy area. I’m not a fan of shape wear , but no matter your size everything looks , I.e., dress look much better. Regardless. You could up a size in spandex and there aren’t so bad. Eileen Fisher pieces always work for me , when I feel a bit bloated 💕

A little confused as I follow Erin and a few others. I’m carrying extra weight since lockdown and I gave up smoking end of January so a UK size 14. They suggest adding belts, wearing t’s or shirts, half tuck etc but definitely suggest wearing belts no matter how large can give you shape. Otherwise I really have enjoyed your last two videos and am interested in your take on things. X

Great tips as always! The A line dress has always been a problem for me , with or without a belly. I am very top heavy compared to the rest of my body and because of that any oversize anything without any closeness/skimming the middle section is going to make me look bigger. Sheath dresses can work but I do have to size up for the girls. I do like wearing men's shirt at the moment since with the plague has come the plague of weight gain. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

Hi Leonie, thanks for the tips. It's summer here, and I have a collection of short sleeve swing dresses in light materials. They skim the body and keep me cool when it's hot enough to cook an egg on the pavement.

This sounds really odd, but I wear Spanx all the time and I don't even need them! I just love them; it's like a 'comfort thing' that I am just used to. They just make me feel better...that simple! Changing the topic completely: was that a black bra you were wearing underneath your sheer top or was it a camisole Leonie? Would you mind sharing...it looks divine!
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 4 жыл бұрын
Wow that's so interesting JayJay and I definitely understand what you mean (not that I have ever worn them) but I do get it. I was wearing a camisole under my black dress but it did just look like a bra now I look at it again. Thanks so much for watching and always commenting JayJay - I really appreciate it :)

I've just found your video, and the hints and tips you've given are amazing. Having had major abdominal surgery a few years ago I've lost all muscle strength around my stomach area, and even an abdominal binder doesn't do much. In hot weather it's so uncomfortable. So I joined the ranks of the baggy tee shirt brigade which although helps a bit, it doesn't do much if I want to get frocked up for an evening out, or meet friends for lunch. I love the half tucked in look, the layered look and the A line shift dresses. So thank you very much, from the U.K. 🇬🇧

Great video, Leonie! I so agree with you on the maternity looks and the shapewear. I have a very big tummy and the half tuck doesn't work for me at all. Just today I for the first time knotted an oversized t-shirt sideways and was very happy with the outcome. It looked like a half tuck light and was very comfortable as well.

It happened to me on a bus too and once I was putting away some heavy shopping in the car when a little old lady admonished me saying I shouldn't be lugging around anything heavy 'in my condition'. Very disheartening, I know. But I looked at the bright side of it - at least she thought I was of child-bearing age when I am definitely way past. So there was that, at least.

Forgot to say: I found the perfect dresses at Old Navy this summer, they are cool, breathable rayon knit, and shaped to show the waist more than a shift dress, but are not too fitted either, lime many fit-and-flares are. They are great for comfort on my thick-waisted figure, but still show one’s feminine shape and look better than a shift or swing dress.

Great video. I just want to add that you don't need a huge wardrobe to look and feel good. Find a few capsule pieces that work and wear them over and over. I did a One Dress One Year challenge in 2022, wore the same dress every day for a year, and it wasn't as inconvenient as I thought it would be. I'm going for 18 months this time, might end it in June 2024 instead of January 2024. :)
