At older ages, the majority of ground balls to the middle infield will have backspin: topspin still predominates for 1B/3B. Adjust fungo reps accordingly.

It's to protect the barrel of the bat from splitting...also takes a little off the ball

@@codyransom7277 fungos are bats. They are longer and skinnier than a normal bat. You've probably seen coaches with bats with tape on the barrel. That likely was a fungo.
