Such a valuable video. I remember as a kid losing my confidence after being hit in the nose. My confidence was off for years playing little league baseball after that. This video address what value lessons kids can learn to avoid what I went through.

So true man it is absolutely terrifying when the ball barely clips that high basket catch and pops them right in the face. This just happened to my little dude last night, definitely going to be incorporating these drills and ideas into our practice sessions. Thank yall so much and keep up the great content!

When I work with little kids to catch, I use the analogy of washing a window to help them understand glove placement. Imagine standing in front of a window without a glove and wiping it clean. Above the waist palm is forward and working side to side maintaining that position. Below the waist you would roll it over work side to side and even turn to the backhand going across the body. It should help reinforce the concept of palm forward, and frankly every house has a window, all kids have washed one at least once right? lol

Swax training baseballs are a great tool as well. It made a HUGE difference with my son. They are sand filled baseballs weighted the same as a baseball. We still play catch with them all the time especially when working on throws in the dirt for first base. My son got hit in the face at 6 on a pop fly with a hard ball and it took some work to get him comfortable catching the ball without closing his eyes or moving. Great drills!

If I could like this video twice I would. In fact, I just unliked it so I could like it again! As the president of a rec fastpitch softball league and coach myself I'm always looking for drills to help our girls, especially younger and newer players, learn to catch the ball better and not be so afraid of the ball. I never thought of juggling or the last drill you did with the bat and will certainly use those next time at practice. I also can think of a lot of really good drills for my tournament team with the pitch pro as well. Something my coaches and I have discussed recently and tried to come up with a solution for would be why it's so much more natural for boys to learn to throw a ball than it is for many girls. After watching a few of these drills I think the ball (size) is probably the biggest factor in this as it's probably to big or heavy for them to hold correctly. I think we will start throwing baseballs more so they can feel the ball roll off their fingertips. I'm open to any ideas and love the content that you post Coach! Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the video!! I have 3 daughters who play softball, and my oldest had no problem learning to turn her glove the correct way. My middle and youngest girls struggled with turning their gloves the correct way. For my middle daughter, I sat her down in a chair and tossed balls at her and it forced her to turn her glove the correct way. She's in 8u now and has no issues. But for my 6U daughter, the chair has not worked. I'm gonna try the bat technique to get her to turn her glove the correct way. Thanks so much again!!!

id like to recommend a wadded up white baseball sock…its nice and soft while having a similar look to a baseball when being thrown back and forth. just play catch with the sock until the kid is able to consistently maintain proper technique…then one day dont say anything about it and use a baseball instead of the wadded up sock.

When my nephew was five I decided to teach him how to catch a baseball. We started out right in front of each other. Easy right? Make a catch step back. Make a catch, step back. If the ball is dropped start over. If the child is doing well start where it's comfortable. Within a half hour, he will know how to catch from across the backyard.

I've got a kid on my team with a lot of natural baseball ability, but he's 11 and this is his first year in baseball, so he's afraid of the ball like he's in t-ball. At the beginning of the season, he was afraid of the baseball in every way, but I've been able to stop him from backing out of the batter's box and I've been able to get him to field a ground ball, but I simply can't get him to get under a pop fly. I tried tennis balls and he fields them perfectly, but the instant I go back to a hardball, he backs up and tries to catch the ball from 3 ft away. His mind is telling him to get under it, but his body simply won't let him do it. I want to put him in the infield so badly, because I'm cheering like hell for this kid, but if he won't get under a pop fly, he's playing the outfield. I'm looking for the magic trick to get him over this fear.

I will use the Bat drill that’s a good start , then I would go to the drill I use , I call the Windshield Wiper. I start them with their glove chest level pointed straight up & elbow straight down with the glove open to the person in front throwing the balls. Then I just throw them light balls could be whiffle or tennis & make them squeeze or if they don’t it will fall out the bottom of the glove. I will rotate the throwing Side to side & middle throws with them only allowed to move their arm at the elbow. This teaches them to squeeze the ball & learn the correct positioning of the the glove on backhands or forehands.

Unless the kid is blind in one eye - which means no depth perception at all. I didn't know - no one around me knew that you need to see out of both eyes in order to see depth and catch a ball. I can't tell you how many times i just completely embarrassed and made a complete fool put of myself for trying to do the things that all the other boys were able to do. I didn't know and I didn't want to give up because I'm not a quitter. Guess who was always the last kid picked in gym class? My childhood was a nightmare - I feel so bad how hopeful I was - if I just kept trying harder. If you know a kid who doesn't have sight in one eye - be very sympathetic to the kid - but make sure his parents know about the depth perception thing. Not everybody is able to catch a baseball no matter how hard they try and the trying and failing does leave its mark. Thank you
