What’s a good starter for mandolin

Do you use a foot stool for your left foot? And does your left hand feel like it is supporting the weight of the mandolin and controlling vertical movement of the mandolin?

No, but I'll rest my left foot on my mandolin case, or I'll rest it on my right ankle. Depends on how long I'll be playing that day. Standing and playing with a strap is great for adding variety.
