I agree. I had an AHH HAAAA moment this week. This video confirms it, as do many others. I'm trying to memorize positions, escapes, submissions... but that didn't work. Then some seasoned blue belt said "be heavy, so heavy I can't move. Place your hand here, so I can't move. Put your knee there, so I can't move. Remove a post and raise my hips and I'll fall" fuuuccckkk me, ahh haaaa. Lol. Same thing the black belt said, but I just never really heard him.

Love Chewy, he's a great teacher...what I took away is I'm setting up to turn their body away from me at my discretion.. and the body follows the head, so it starts with the cross face

As a beginner I find videos explaining the fundamental concepts of the positions more beneficial than exact steps, nice vid.

Yes! I spent longer than I'm willing to admit thinking that I could submit people from inside their guard... 😔 I think a basic overview of each of the positions should be the first thing a new student should learn.

This is helpful. I’m new to bjj and I know what side control is but I don’t really know what the goal is in each position. The classes usually move pretty fast.

Since first watching this, this has been so valuable. I always end up getting my partner in side control, and this helps me control them more.

Chew, your video was like having a class on the old days. These are great details that I use to have conversations about with my old school colleagues back in time in Brazil. Some of them usually are not shared, even in seminars. You just revealed the golden tips that works for skinny and big guys. Congrats!

Chewie, the gentleman you're rolling with at 2:04 reminds me SO much of one of my training buddies. I'm a 45-year-old 4-stripe white belt (been training for 2 years now); this buddy of mine is 24 and has been training for 7 months, and seems to be a bit of a prodigy, just because his hips naturally move like the guy you're rolling with. In fact, he's giving some of our newer blue belts FITS because his hip mobility is just spectacular. I looked up this video specifically to figure out how to tighten up my hip control. Thank you SO much for these concepts, and keep up the great work!

chew, i finally pulled the trigger and joined a gym. last night, i had trouble keeping side control and after watching 3 other videos/channels, yours is the only one that stuck. your videos are simple yet extremely thorough. you teach concepts which makes it easier for a new guy like me instead of intricate techniques that i get lost halfway on. you don't drawl on and you always manage to keep my attention even on the 15 minute videos. thanks!

Should you do all of these (i.e. block the hip, block the shoulder and block the head) or will any one do? At around 2:48, when Chewie has all his weight and attention around Chad's shoulder and chest, he isn't doing anything to block Chad's hip from turning towards him. Is that unnecessary in that case? If not, how do you block your opponent's hip when you are trying to be tight and heavy around their chest/shoulder?

Lol I'm usually able to get out of side control and hold side control pretty easily against alot of opponents in my city, except for the black belts... My black belt instructor alone, I feel like his side mount is impossible to escape no matter what I do, and then I feel like I can never hold him in Side Control. No lie, everytime I go up against a Black Belt (Unless they're really small) I feel like I will never get to their level. 🤣 It's so weird to me, it's like that frkn belt is magic.

Hi Chew, Could you do video about back control? Many times I have one hook in and seatbelt or two hooks in I slip over opponent's head. It seems like I m to high and I do not feel like im having any control. It is really frustrating cuze it is one of the most dominating position but maan I prefer to stay in side control than take someone's back. Greetings from Poland !

you probably already have a video about this but ive noticed with white belts not all but most ether right before a roll or right after they make comment about getting beat or going to get beat and i try to explain to them its not about that and once i figured that out myself i improved alot i dont know if you have a video on that or not but would be something good to talk about.

Time and time again you show us how the Gi is our enemies best friend - why do BJJ with a gi at all?
@Chewjitsu8 жыл бұрын
Haha. It's not the enemy if you know how to use it. Why would you be completely against the gi?
@Sfourtytwo8 жыл бұрын
Yeah well, it gives our opponent a good grip, it allows him to choke us, we can be lifted by it So why is wearing it an advangtage for myself? In reality i wear Tshirt 90% of the time - so doesnt that mean np gi is much more realistic and makes life more difficult for my opponent?
