Even though I'm not a beginner (anymore) I found this rather useful. I like that you've not got hung up on a "right way". It's whatever feels comfortable and works for the player. For me, it depends on whether I'm seated or not, but I tend to keep the neck up a bit and slightly away from my body for ease of chord changes.

Hi, I've just began to learn to play the ukulele and I'm finding that the wrist of my fretting hand can become quite sore, a bit like a mild cramping pain, is this my arm getting used to the new position or am I holding/playing the fretboard wrong? Thank you
@GotAUkulele8 жыл бұрын
+Lucy McGowan It's almost certainly normal cramp from your arms and hands doing things they are not used to. Most beginners go through it. The important thing is to listen to your body - if the pain persists, take a break for a day then revisit. Playing through that kind of pain isn't a good idea as it can lead to inflamation. But with breaks and more practice, eventually it should go away.

Practice I am afraid - there is no magic to how I am doing it in the video - just practice. The fretting hand is there to lightly support the neck up and stop it slipping. The left hand IS supposed to touch the neck - just no need to throttle it.

Yes - the same. Just a bit more compact on the arms. As for fingers - keep thumb on back of neck, ensure fingers engage frets straight down and perpendicular to fingerboard, not on an angle. Also don’t squeeze too hard - light touch

It’s an old video but it seemed worth a shot to ask- I am struggling with my new ukulele sliding away from me… I try to tuck it into my elbow crook like you show, but the body then just slides away from my chest like it will just fall if I let it unless I also hold it in place with my fretting hand, and when I rest it on my leg instead it slides around on my lap… I am thinking my hands will need to be able to move freely to change my finger positions and strum, but I seem to need at least one hand to hold the instrument in place… it does have a smooth satin type finish, but they all seemed to be quite smooth at the shop and I can’t imagine it is just the shape of my bust, all shapes of people play… am I destined to play with a strap? That is fine but I don’t actually have one, I just got the uke and tuner and bag. I don’t have any notable experience with playing an instrument so learning the fretting is already plenty hard without worrying that the whole thing will fall to the floor. Any tips would be welcome! 🙏

It may be that a strap is your option - my wife always uses one as anatomically she has the same issue as you. Even though I'm right handed holding it left handed is way more comfortable... should I hold it that way? And also do you have to have a "left" handed ukulele if you play it left handed?
@GotAUkulele8 жыл бұрын
There is no absolute right and wrong with this Seth, but I would say the following 1. I dont think I know ANY right handed players who play left handed - it may seem uncomfortable, but when learning it's ALL unfomfortable! 2. If playing left handed you ideally need to reverse the strings - this also may involve reversing the bridge saddle and the nut slots. Not doing that is making use of learning resources much harder as they will be assuming the G string is nearest the ceiling and the A nearest the floor. There are other sound issues also - for example a down strum sounds the way it does because it expects the hand to hit the G first and the A last. Playing the ukulele reveresed without swapping the strings makes a down strum sound like an up strum! In short - if you are right handed, I personally can think of lots of reasons to suggest you will be happier further down the line sticking to right handed. Saying all that - there are no rules against playing it backwards if you want to - just be aware that you may be making things harder for yourself!

+Lily Brown They are all valid ukuleles. You see many people claim that if you have bigger hands you need a bigger ukulele. It's is a total MYTH. The scale of the ukulele actually has little to do with space for fingers and things like the width at the nut and the profile of the neck have far more impact. Also bigger ukes can create bigger stretches for beginners. BUt you know.. the internet sucks and people see something, believe it's true and just keep repeating it.

What would be suggested for a beginning 12 year old. I'm pretty short and have regular hands
@GotAUkulele8 жыл бұрын
I dont tend to think that ukuleles should be any different for youngsters or adults - nor do I think that hand size should matter. For very small kids though I would accept that sopranos are easier. Depends on how big a 12 year old we are talking about. My daughter is nearly 7 and can hold and play a concert perfectly easily. As for what to choose - again - depends on budget - in fact for a child I would argue it's unfair to give them a cheap and unplayable instrument - it will only put them off and that just isnt fair. This is the full list of my reviews - suggest you set your budget then look at the sopranos and concerts that have the highest scores! www.gotaukulele.com/p/ukulele-reviews.html

I don't understand why straps aren't commonplace for ukes. They make it easier and more comfortable to play, so why not use one? Case in point: Something as simple as playing an open C6 chord (all four strings open) and then moving up to a barred F6 chord (all strings barred at the fifth fret) is quite awkward without a strap, because you need your fretting hand to support the weight of the neck. And it's difficult to move the fret hand up to fifth position while not accidentally touching the first string. It's not impossible, but it's certainly not terribly comfortable. I want to be comfortable when I play; I don't care if purists say you shouldn't use a strap. I tried for months when I first started to go without a strap, just because it seemed to be the way most people played it. The second I put a strap on, I thought, "Why in THE hell didn't I do this sooner?"
@GotAUkulele7 жыл бұрын
I think it's purely down to traditionalists. I don't actually use a strap myself to make it easier, as I learned without one - but I DO use one on stage for convenience - leaves hands free for grabbing a drink!

The fact that one of your sleeves is up and the other isn't is giving me an OCD attack lol.
@GotAUkulele7 жыл бұрын
Really? It's just to stop the sleeves muting the strings...

How do I play the chords without touching the other strings??
@GotAUkulele6 жыл бұрын
Practice is the only answer I’m afraid... ensure your fingers land down on strings perpendicular to neck and not on an angle.

I thought for sure that after buying my 4th uke, a pro-grade Kanilea K2T, that I'd be cured of Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome, because after all, what could be better? How about a Kanilea-made Islander MT-4 like-new for (a bargained price of) $50 USD? Darn, there's no cure! ; ) BTW - 5 ukes in 4 months - is that a record?

I’m not really a beginner, think I’m holding it wrong because every time I play particularly complex chords my hands hurts so much from trying to hold down the strings
@GotAUkulele4 жыл бұрын
That could also be down to pressure being applied. It's natural to squeeze the uke, but you will see that professionals have a really light touch. Seems counter intuitive, but you really only need enough pressure to engage the string to the fret crown, nothing more.

No - this is a right handed video. But even if it wasn’t it’s just a mirror image
@Bourne08145 жыл бұрын
I'm left-handed, but I don't know the first thing about any stringed instrument. So, it should make no difference to me if I'm left or right handed. Just like how I learned to use a right-handed mouse or right-handed videogame controllers. I had no idea there was such a thing as a left-handed version of this stuff. I'm learning right-handed. I don't know much, but I'm learning and I don't really feel like learning left-handed would be of any benefit to me compared to right-handed.
