Great video, should mention something about replacing the crush washers. Just performed my first oil change on used 07 400ex and it looks like I have a slow leak coming from the drain plug on the crank. I am assuming a new crush washer will fix this.

Partzilla, I have a 2004 400ex that I just did a complete rebuild on. About a month ago I rounded the head on the engine drain bolt and wasn’t able to remove it. I have recently gotten the bolt out and ordered a new one. The new bolt I purchase didn’t come with a crush washer, but it has a o ring around the end. Is the crush washer necessary? Or would the o ring work just fine? Any feedback is nice and I would really appreciate it.

If it's stripped, there are ways to fix it if you have to, like a Helicoil rethread kit, but with something like an oil tank, it's probably just easier to replace the tank. They are relatively inexpensive.

It's better to check the level and stop when full. If you overfill, you can cause running issues.

After sitting for that long AND the dipstick is dry, I would drain and refill the oil to the proper level before you attempt to start it.

I think I'm having an oil issue. 2004 Honda 400ex. I watched this video.. great video by the way. I did my oil change just as you said. rode it around for a couple of days .. checked the oil .. and bam zero oil on the dip stick. so I poured in what was left from the initial oil change. start it ran it.. checked again and no oil on the dip stick. not sure it is my oil pump or not. any help will be greatly appreciated

That is an issue. You have a magic ATV, it makes oil disappear! How much oil did you put in originally? I'm sure this is obvious, but I have to ask, it's not leaking anywhere? Are you blowing smoke from the exhaust?

I poured in 1.9qts.. No oil leak, it sits in the garage no puddle on the ground. It doesn't smoke either...

Well, it has to be going somewhere and there are only a few places it can go. It could be leaking only when you run it and it's under pressure. Maybe from an oil line? So you wouldn't necessarily see it on the ground in the garage. Or it's burning it. At that rate, you should see smoke though. When you put in the oil in the oil tank, did the dipstick ever read full?

Yes, after I did the oil change exactly like the video. The oil was 3 quarters of the way up. so after I took it up the street for 2 days I decided to check it again. That's when I saw noticed there was nothing on the dip stick. Could it all be in the crack case? I just bought it for $1700 bucks. The Honda powersports shop up the road wants $85 an hour + parts.. lol Trying to take the DIY approach.

don't get me wrong.. Mr Talley is my hero in this topic, but for this one I beg to defer in the filter replace.. first you need to fit the filter in the cover, then in the engine, not the other way around, if you do the engine first, then the cover you can put it uncentered and you will not be able to notice it, hence clogging the oil flow.. for both the filter to the cover and the spring to the engine you can use a small amount of sticky grease in order to keep them still..

Hi Lombardo. We recommend the GN4 for the 250ex, however, the HP4 will work just fine. It is a wet clutch, so don't use the HP4M.

Take it off the unit and see how bad it is. If it's cleanable, some contact cleaner and a brush should do the trick. If it's worse than that, just buy a new one.

Dylan, you should never apologize for trying to learn. If you have to add oil, then you are leaking oil somewhere and that should be fixed. A proper oil service is to drain the old dirty oil, new filter and add fresh oil. After awhile, the heat and friction breaks down the oil viscosity so new oil helps keep the motor in good running condition. Happy to help.

No, it's not necessary to change every oil change. Add a dab of oil to the o-ring when you reinstall and inspect it for damage or cracking every oil change.

Not really. You can check to see it if was maintained well. Anytime you purchase a used unit, it's advised to just change all fluids and check brakes so you start off right.

If you are filling up the oil tank and not showing oil...you need to figure out where it's going. Maybe add another half quart and see if it registers. No more than that, you don't want to completely overfill it.

2002 honda 400ex...let it run about 2min.. Then checked the oil level after sitting almost 5min...the oil tank was full to the top? No smell of gas. Oil was clean? Any ideas?...i drained both plugs and pulled filter.. Thinking i might add and start fresh tomarrow then look again
