How to Hone a wheel cylinder Ft. Tool Girl Sam

In response to a viewer's request here's a video covering how to hone a wheel cylinder. The same technique would apply to a Master Cylinder or clutch slave cylinder too.
It's not something that is done much these days given the disposable World we seem to live in but sometimes, be it due to parts supply, urgency of repair or budget, knowing how to 'hone' is a useful skill & a relatively inexpensive operation too.
Since Sam was in the workshop again today I felt this would be a perfect training exercise for her & looking back, she did a great job.

Never good when fluid seeps out past the seal lips. Definitely get busy cleaning it up asap, dont miss a drop either. Well done. 😁

Thanks Andy! Great didactic video! That's what we call therapeutic obstinacy: I'm talking about wheel cylinder, not about Sam's cold. Where you can get the replacement rubber boots and inner seals? Is there any maintenance kit? Sam great...should be good a tea with honey and lemon when working in the shop

That finish is not adequate use kerosene as the lubricant ans spin the hone at a high speed

Erm....well if you do that you'll loose the cross hatching effect which is critical. I'll stick to what works for me but if that works for you then all good but I wouldn't recommend that method. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Andy

I have been rebuilding resleeving and honing slave cylinders and master cylinders for 40+ years and have never hand a return for no cross hatching, the cross hatching only need to be minimal in brake components, excessive cross hatch will shorten the seal life

I would not use any petroleum based product on a brake cylinder. Brake fluid is more than adequate to use as a lubricant. Even soapy water works fine as long as you rinse and dry right away to avoid rust. I agree that the honing speed was way too slow. Normally you want at least 800-1,000 RPM.

It's either one does nothing and learns nothing, or one learns to do anything but does it slow and/or poorly at first. And, this video is pretty useful, as well. I would be grateful Andy & Sam took the time out of their work to show us how to do something like this.
