I’ve played Belle, Ariel, and Anna within the last 2 years and I remember complaining about how annoying Ariel was. But, then I started looking at her from a different view point and found out “I think she’s trading he voice in spite of her dad and to see her dream world, Prince Eric was just a bonus. After that realization a bunch of other things clicked as well. Belle and Anna were way less difficult to go in depth to, and Anna is way more then she seems to be and I love it! Now I’m playing Dorothy and needed this video as a reminder that characters are never what they seem😊

yaaaaaas I am ALL about this! Ariel is especially a character I will defend to the heavens and vow to play as truthfully as I can because I feel like she gets a bad rap. tl;dr I’m about to go on a very long tirade defending her lol here I goooooooo Ariel has had this passion for a world disallowed in her land (by her own father!) for years and years, as evidenced by her impressive collection of human artifacts. She’s basically an anthropologist! There’s a scene where she risks her life in a shark chase over a dang _dinglehopper_ with little hesitation - the girl is hardcore. She also physically rescues a human from drowning, coincidentally a charming prince who is the first human she ever gets a close look at, but nonetheless through that act of saving his life (another thing that gets surprisingly overlooked! How many other fairytales start with the princess saving the prince?) she falls in love with him. Note that the song Part of Your World is not about Eric and never has been about Eric, he’s not a part of her story yet. Yes, while the pronoun is “your” in the song’s title, the actual line she repeats over and over again in the original song is “part of *that* world” - referencing the world above she’s been obsessed with for years. Not merely Eric’s world (who even is Eric? again, she doesn’t know he exists yet). Only when the Reprise of that song happens after she rescues Eric does the line change to “part of *your* world” referencing him now that her dream has taken a new direction. Now she has a more direct goal to accomplish in the pursuit of becoming human, and it guides her further to make it happen. Ariel’s father destroys her entire collection of human stuff when he finds out about this - that’s years of dreaming, exploring, discovering, learning, gone in an instant. That scene is always difficult for me to watch. Ariel is now at her lowest point, completely broken. The opportunity comes along that she can join the human world, for a price, and it comes at the perfect time because not only is she absolutely crestfallen after what has just transpired with her collection, but she has this new motivation for her lifelong dream of being a human now that Eric is part of her story. She doesn’t change herself for a man, like what so many people like to say, she’s simply taking advantage of an opportunity she’s wanted nearly her entire life, an opportunity that now has a clearer direction through her newfound love. Was she manipulated by Ursula into taking that opportunity due to her impulsiveness and also being at a completely desperate state after having her dreams be literally shattered in her face? Hellll yeah. She’s not perfect, yet that’s another thing that makes her, well, human! But going to Ursula was a last resort - she’s completely alone in her ideas about the world above, what makes her life worthwhile is the connection she finds with the human world and she is made to believe that there is nothing left for her under the sea. She is a go-getter - she was making plans to meet Eric again not even a day later from rescuing him (those plans got intercepted by a really catchy song, but nonetheless!). She’s not just a dreamer, she’s a doer. She takes every opportunity to make her dreams come true and runs with it. And the pink dress scene is significant because this is the first time she’s actually standing on her own two…what do you call ‘em? oh, feet! She’s dreamt of this day for a long time, and she gets to share this moment in front of the very catalyst of making her dreams a reality. It isn’t just a princess in a pink dress and some heels looking pretty as usual, this is a moment where a girl who has been told “no” her whole life about the thing she loves most of all, she’s been told for years that the world above is to be feared and not loved, and now she is welcomed by humans to take part in the very life she’s always dreamt about without that judgment. This is where she belongs! And to top it off, the prince is more or less drooling at her, so even if she can’t speak she’s already thwarting Ursula’s plans with her own innate charm! Ariel has so much agency in her own story and I wish more people would recognize that. (I could go on and on, heck I wrote my senior thesis project on this 😂) Anyway, I love this video bc Disney Princesses + theatre ingenues + makeup + you + that bit at the end w/ the wig & David Hasselhoff in Jekyll and Hyde = best! day! EVER!

I played Ariel recently and I feel like a lot of people don’t realize she has this depth. My favorite part of the show is the song “if only (quartet)” because what a lot of people don’t realize is the stakes. Ariel is in the place she’s always wanted to be and it’s so surreal but she knows that she’s going to essentially die tomorrow and she’s looking around at this room that she’ll never be in again touching things she’ll never touch again and she has this urgency that’s so hard to convey through the movie

I’m glad you made this. There is a lot more to Disney princesses than people give credit for. For example, I have always disagree with people who find Cinderella bland or had not character. She was PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY ABUSED by her stepfamily after the loss of her parents. Yet she still treats people with kindness. She knew that getting that room unlocked to go down to the Prince was a risk, yet she finds the courage to leave her abusive family for a life of the unknown. I will stand by Cinderella, 100% more to that character than people give her credit for.

One thing I think a lot of people miss when analyzing Ariel is that she didn’t just fall in love with her prince and was willing to do anything for him. She isn’t just a privileged girl who’s impulsive and curious. She’s wanted to one thing in her life that she was never allowed to do, she wanted to see and explore a new world she desperately wants to know more about. In her ‘I want song’ she says that she wants something new in her life, she wants more. Ariel is a curious, gutsy, adventurous character that has had her sights set on the one thing that makes her happy. She’s willing to risk herself and everything she has for curiosity. Sure she’s reckless, naive, but I guess that’s not really her fault either since she was barred from knowing what she wanted to know. It’s like when someone tells you not to do something but that only makes you want to do it more... She’s wanted to explore the human world for almost her entire life and what leads to her actually doing that is Eric. She sees him and she doesn’t immediately fall in love with him, she’s curious. She thinks he’s handsome and wants to know more about him, about his crew, his ship and more. Then after saving him, knowing a bit more about him, she falls in love. I honestly don’t think she’s superficial and shallow. She just seeks knowledge and understanding... sort of like Belle in a way. Remember when in the movie she’s accidentally told about the forbidden wing and she’s immediately curious. Then she later visits the wing for herself? It’s the same with Ariel, in the shipwreck and the human world... and later Eric. Ariel is a brave, gutsy, ambitions, intelligent, curious character that’s also reckless, careless, privileged, and naive. Yes she has her flaws, but that’s what makes her an interesting character. No she isn’t always right, but really...she’s a young girl with a passion for something that she can’t get... wouldn’t you do almost anything to get to that one thing you’ve always wanted? Just wanted to say that. Sorry it’s so long.
@xCielorosax5 жыл бұрын
One thing that I love about the original Disney Cinderella is that while being very optimistic in a realistc sort of way she's also very sarcastic in an understated way that's easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Another thing that I've also noticed about Aurora is that despite her short spoken appearance, you can tell she's a lot more of a dreamer and naive due to her upbringing than say Ariel (who's more impulsive) and Belle (who's very practical but gutsy like you said) given that Aurora's noted to dream about finding love and just goes dancing with a stranger in the woods and then proceeds to tell him where she lives, so I try to incorporate that into my portrayals of the two of them. Sorry for the rambling, I just wanted to share that since the video was also analyzing the princesses.
@grace50335 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. When it comes to Disney in particular, Snow White and Aurora are the only 2 that have little to no personality/depth. Everyone else is unique. So, here's my list of how to humanize other Disney heroines : Cinderella: she's spent like a decade in servitude. NEVER did she think she'd end up being royalty. Another very important detail is that Cinderella literally NEVER says anything about wanting a prince to save her from her problems. All she asks for is a cute dress and a night out. Ariel: Remember that Eric is NOT the main reason for Ariel's obsession with humans. The "thingamabobs" came first, and Eric is just an added bonus Belle: literally just watch this video because Kat does a really intense deep-dive into Belle specifically Jasmine: She was given more ambition in the remake, but she was already SO powerful in both the original and on Broadway! She wanted to get the hell out of that castle and stand up for what she felt was right. She didn't want to be held down by the expectations that her royal status keeps bombarding her with. Meg: This should be especially useful with "Hercules"'s upcoming Broadway debut. First thing's first, don't immediately assume that Meg and Belle have to be similar. Susan's resume is just versatile. Then you have to understand this: she was so in love with a guy that, when she found him dead, she basically did the equivalent of selling your soul to the devil. Then the dude is caught with another girl, leaving Meg to jump to conclusions and make bad assumptions about men. It's for this reason that it literally takes her an entire song to confess her feelings for Hercules. Giselle: Okay. "Enchanted" may or may not make it to Broadway one day. But Giselle is a character I feel like I just have to deep-dive into. Now I know what you're all thinking. "But Grace, she's a walking stereotype!" I know. Giselle, much like Fiona from "Shrek", is intentionally a parody of the classic damsel in distress. But once she gets accustomed to life in New York, she becomes much more independent, and, more importantly, learns how true love actually works Tiana: This one should be a no-brainer, but remember: love was NEVER at the forefront of Tiana's mind, even after meeting Naveen. All she cared about was working as hard as possible to afford her own restaurant, and fulfill the dream that her dad didn't live to see come true Rapunzel: Rapunzel and Jasmine have very similar motives... Anna: Although Belle gets the longest period of attention from Kat, Anna is discussed in depth during the video as well

People hate on Cinderella for having the prince save her but like,,,,what other options did she have? She was abused ever since she was small and is still a nice person somehow???? Literally AMAZING. Of COURSE she went with the prince; he's the first person in her life who didn't treat her horribly and he was her way out of an abusive and toxic household. And if people want to talk about reality, where is she supposed to run away to in historical France? Where is she supposed to go in MODERN France? She was remarkably strong for staying nice in that horrid situation and took an opportunity when she saw it. I hope to play Cinderella one day and do the roll justice! :)

Thank you for this video!! I’m auditioning for Ariel later this month for my school musical. This helped a lot!

QOTD: I’m pretty sure it was Cinderella when I was, like, 4. I had love for Snow White, Aurora and Belle too, I didn’t really pick favourites, I was just fascinated at the aesthetics of these breathtaking women. Now, though... can I say Belle? I know it’s suuuuper basic, but I feel like she has one of the most canonically solid characters in the lineup. Also, I had a nerd phase when I was 11 so. Mulan, too, we all love a badass warrior princess, but lately I can relate to her at the beginning when she can’t find her purpose. And recently, after a rewatch, Ariel too. I was shook at how concrete her characterisation was, not very ‘woke’, but a fleshed our person.

Thanks for the video! These days I can never pick just one Disney Princess, it changes based on the day and the inspiration I’m looking for (and that’s a great thing!). Though I will say that Jane from Tarzan is underrated - adorable, kind, smart, and SO funny.

i gotta say about Ariel though, she didn’t just throw her life away for Eric! she had a fascination with the human world from the beginning, Eric’s really just a bonus lol

Omg this video couldn’t have one out at a better time. On November 6th and 7th, I’m trying out for Belle in beauty and the beast. I’ve worked really hard for it and I’m sure this video will help me a lot. You’re probably not gonna see this but, thanks anyway💗💗

Nice! Coincidentally, I saw some friends perform in a community theater production of Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' earlier this year. 👌Good luck on your audition!

Thanks for this! I’m not a playing a princess necessarily, but one of those moms who usually don’t have much personality except smiling and I’m trying to develop the character. This has really helped!

12:14 btw eric didn’t fall in love with ariel because of her looks, he fell in love with her because of her voice. Just a fact Disney princess geek right here 🤪

This made me so happy! I played Belle back in May. The production was bad but it was fun. (When I say bad, I mean our Beast forgot to die. IT WAS BAD) I love Disney princesses and everything about this video. This notification made me so happy when I saw it.

I’ve already played Elsa in the past but we are doing The Little Mermaid right now and I want to play Ariel sooo bad! I usually would be cast as Ursula but I feel like Ariel has a lot more personality than other princesses and I relate to her a lot. Also I love how you say to drop the princess voice and all of the fake stuff and play them real because a lot of time I’ve seen people play princesses that way and get the parts over the people who play them real and it makes me so upset

I agree that Disney princesses are more than just pretty and nice (which is a very underrated quality if you ask me, but that’s a topic for another day) and I don’t think they’re portrayed as just those things in their original animated films. Instead, I think there are a lot more characteristics to Disney princesses shown through their actions and words in their original animated movies that people like to gloss over and not acknowledge because they don’t fit their opinions of Disney princesses. I also agree that the falling in love at first glance aspect of Disney films should not be taken so seriously as the world of Disney is and probably supposed to be completely different than reality (which is why I love Disney movies so much). Sorry, if my comment’s a little long, I just have a lot of opinions when it comes to this subject matter. By the way, my favorite Disney princesses are Anna, Merida & Ariel.

Thank you so much Kat! I’m currently playing the role of Liesl von Trapp in a community theatre production and whilst she isn’t a Disney princess I found this video really helped me figure out more of her character! QOTD Rapunzel is easily my fav Disney princess but Cinderella is my fav broadway princess✨

My favorite princess is Ariel. I always saw the fact that she goes to land, not because of her being "in love" with Eric, but because she feels out of place in the sea. She sings several times about how she feels like she was meant to be on land. I relate to the idea of not feeling like you belong where you are, or being torn between to places. I'm part Latina, but because I don't fully look the part, and I dont get to spend alot of time with my family from Colombia, I always feel like an outsider to that culture. Ariel is a mermaid, but doesn't feel like she belongs on her own world. When she finally meets Eric, that is the pushing point. She never wanted to go on land for Eric. She wanted to go on land for everything that Eric HAD. And that's why Ariel is my favorite princess and one of my dream roles. I want to go a lot more in depth, but I could write a book based off of my opinions on The Little Mermaid ALONE. And it would be a long one. I also LOVE Meg from Hercules but who doesn't. Time to go write a book series about my opinions and interpretations of princess movies.

Found you by accident after watching ingenue by Thom Yorke. Loved the ultra intelligent and literary aware monologue combined with the very artistic makeup tutorial. You’re amazing. Love from, a grumpy 30 year old Australian bloke. Can’t believe I watched the whole video.
