There's a LOT of work to be done in the bowling sphere with terminology pertaining to releases. I was told so many times that you want to 'go through the ball' and 'getting around it is bad'. And yet I see the pros completely getting around the ball. And then I come to find out, when I'm on house shot I do indeed want to get around the ball. The issue isn't what you do with your hand necessarily, it's what you do with your arm and the position of your elbow. Which I believe you guys did cover in a previous video. The lack of people's ability to properly communicate what they mean led me, personally, to a lot of confusion and frustration for a while before I started to truly understand the proper mechanics of a good release.

I think “getting around the ball” means you started to rotate before your arm was pointing straight down. I noticed he didn’t begin rotating until his arm was already on the upswing.

This really helped me a lot. As a "stroker" using a GEM and/or UFO Alert, I've had issues with consistency and not pulling the ball left when trying to increase my rev rate (like I threw it when I was younger). When I followed this direction for strokers, I was able to take my 152 average and roll a 193 and 229 at league. The first game was around average, but I was trying to get comfortable with the release. Thank you for the great tips provided on the channel.

I went to this last year on advise on the art of bowling (if memory serves). My high game in 25 years of bowling was a 279 that I had done 5 times in the past. But last year in Feb during open bowl I had my first real shot for a 300. I ended up with a 298. 6 weeks later on the last night of Wed night I hit my first 300 on league and got my ring. Then on a unsanctioned summer sport shot league just 6 weeks later I did it again 300 #2. This time I went 17 in a row on a long flat pattern. (very proud of this even if not a sanctioned league) I went over 700 but only a little. Then a few weeks later I had a 724 series. Just keep watching all of these good bowling channels, Ronald Hickman Jr. is a very technical channel & Jr Raymond. These all helped my game as well as Brad & Kyel. Keep watching and practicing as much as you can. You will be getting 300's by the end of the year. My other secret was getting a arsenal of balls. Lanes change and having a range of balls from weak to heavy is key. Even on dryer lanes I can still throw close to my favorite part of the lane. Having multiple balls is a lot like having a bag of golf clubs, A lot like golf sometimes you need the driver and sometimes you need a sand wedge. Best of luck!

You can spend hours and hours trying to do something when practicing, but sometimes all you need is "palm up" and "palm left (or right)", and it clicks. Thanks d00dz! Can't wait to try this stuff out!

I use the up the back approach when I'm throwing cross lane to pick up spares. The ball goes straight with just a little hook at the end. I account for the hook when looking at the release point. This has really improved my spare game.

I still been bowling with my style longer than you 2 been alive,over 40 years,and it isnt how everyone else plays,and my ball slides down the lane then hooks,whether dry lane or oily ,does the same,I use the last 2 fingers and my thumb on right hand ,and its wicked to see it go.

Just remember elbow tucked. I seen a 25 pin jump in average when I started always keeping my elbow in. That means your hand is flat and facing up until the very end of your swing. Them you keep it that away during delivery if you want to tighten your angles and run long with a skid flip action. Then you are after extreme rotation or or a early hooking ball then same thing elbow in palm up but after the ball reaches the bottom of your swing plane you will simple rotate your hand in to shake hands with the headpin as they say. But you rotate your wrist not your arm and you do not do it until the end of your swing. You do not want the elbow ever to be sticking out no matter what type of release you are doing. keep it in and tucked as close to the body as you can get. Then your go-too normal ball will be somewhere between palm flat up the back of ball and shaking hands but still elbow turned in throughout the swing. You should never have to force a ball to hook. Use a poperswing and it will come natural when using a fingertip reactive ball drilled correctly. Like anything practice and more practice until it is muscle memory for all 3 and you can change it up whenever needed. So many new bowlers try to force a ball to turn by having the elbow out and coming around and even over the top of the the ball. They do this because it is about the only way to get a plastic housse ball to hook and it becomes bad habit even when they get a proper reactive ball. A proper reactive hook ball is drilled with up to 3 oz of side weight so they will turn without the help. You have to under the ball to get proper rotation and carry pins. The only way to achieve this is keeping the elbow in and tucked. Best of luck to you as you develop your game. Remember bad habits are hard to break! So learning prop technique from the start is important. Keep watching Brad and Kyle and you will be bowling 300's soon enough.

Love the way you guys break it down! Kyle, I will work on keeping my elbow tucked and thinking about my palm facing the wall. At the shop where I bought my ball I had a quick coaching session to check the fit, the guy told me there’s one thing I need to remember if I want to hook the ball… which I'd like to learn… ‘trigger finger’. End with your thumb up and index finger pointing. I started ok but struggled to get it.

Great topic. This is the most important aspect of bowling and hitting the pocket properly. No ball looks good if your rotation isn't proper to the angle of attack you are playing, lane condition, your speed, etc.

So..... I hadn't bowled in about 10 years until this past week. I was in a league in Denver. Nothing serious but I two Strom balls. Then a straight ball I can't remember the brand. I was taught how to hook this way. A friend would always say release like your shaking someone's hand. That worked great for me. Also if you don't bowl for 10 years. You realize you got muscles you don't use everyday.lol Great video guys.

One hand, no thumb bowler here. One thing I have been playing with is turning the ball either way in my hand with my fingers in. If I rotate the ball cw, I stay up the back more. If I rotate the ball ccw, I get around the ball more. What exactly am I changing when I do this? Mass bias?

I was suticasing it to make it hook, which takes more precision and then also more room for error. When I was bowling this weekend, I was focusing on handshake to the right (I am a lefty) and it worked without me having to throw it like a upside down football release on suitcase style. I even had people ask if I was a pro I was doing it so well this weekend at the lanes. But this is great. I can think the same way. Face palm for straight, wall pointing rotated hand only on the same line for hook. My biggest problem was crossing over. Do you all have any tips for avoiding arm crossover?

The best tip I ever heard was to create a decent-sized V between your pointer and middle finger (when in the ball), and as you come through the swing, your pointer-finger should be facing towards the pins (or like you said, pointing up against your forehead after follow-through). Along with getting your thumb out of the ball first, thinking like your bowling ball is a yo-yo and your "flicking" it down. Do kids play with yo-yo's these days? lol -- anyway. Over-exaggerated, but it helps to develop the mind-muscle connection.

Can you please explain the "feel" of the release. Are you letting the wrist "break" or "flop" down (some call it the yo-yo)? I'm having problems finding that feel and not getting proper roll. My hand keeps leaking to the outside and I'm getting more of a spin like it's on a top.

I always concentrate on my thumb at the release. My thumb at three o'clock early roll up the back. Thumb at one o'clock later hook. Thumb at twelve to eleven o'clock later hook.

@chasbari

Yes, hand position.. but.. layouts make a huge difference. When your Pro Shop Operator isn't good at dual angle stuff and ends up laying everything out so that you have a bag full of proverbial five irons, you can end up overdoing things and developing bad habits just trying to get the ball to move when someone else with minimal hand but the right layout is shaping the shot and hitting. Now, if we were back in the non dynamic pancake weight plastic ball era, it would give everyone a baseline of relative comparison. It would be easy to see the difference between a full roller, semi full or spinner release. Now, it's all confounded by dynamic cores and dual angle layouts. When you finally get a ball in hand that doesn't overlap everything else in your bag, then releases start to make sense again.

I tried tucking my elbow but after a few games, my shoulder started hurting. My average is low 190’s and the way I normally bowl is by starting at the middle dot and standing perpendicular to the lane.m ( yes, sideways!). I throw over the first arrow and I don’t know why it works, but my ball hooks right into the pocket and strikes most of the time. I’m a lefty. Any thoughts?
