Hey Gary, this maybe too late now but, if your water heater is easy to access there will be a hose bib valve at the bottom of the tank. If you use that for hot water you will also be flushing out the water heater of any sediment and make the water heater work more efficiently. and you'll have a lot better flow.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN9 жыл бұрын
***** I would have to learn what that is but it is in the basement and I would need 3xs as much hose. Super hot water though.
@jus4funtim9 жыл бұрын
You would recognize the valve' Its the same as a hose bib fitting outside your house, they put one at the bottom of the water tank to flush or drain the tank if it goes bad- lot easier to move an empty tank.
@eveny1199 жыл бұрын
***** Question for you? Do you have to turn off gas before or relight pilot light afterwards, or can you drain it while still running? Ive been wanted to drain w.h. but I know it is hard to relight (due to plumber having a hard time doing it in past) ?
@jus4funtim9 жыл бұрын
You don't need to drain the tank unless you are going to replace it, in which case you would shut the gas off and disconnect all the plumbing. If you want to flush the tank leave everything the way it is, connect a hose to the hose bib fitting and open the valve, be careful not to force the valve if the tank is old, work it back and forth . watch the end of the hose and when the water runs clear turn the valve off. P.S. some times you need to open and close the valve a couple of times to clear out any rust or sand in the valve seat.
@eveny1199 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks, when I bought the house the inspector told me to flush the tank out once in a while, but I didn't know if I needed a plumber so I never did.

I'm amazed the greens survived. FYI:We in upstate NY hit below 0 most nights, its been a very hard frozen Feb.... frozen pipes, neighbors had no water for past week, I had a flooded basement, other neighbor had 1 foot thick of ice on roof that leaks during sunshine melt...If Phil* is right, it will hopefully warm up and stay that way soon. I haven't even started planting my transplants. But Im going to be listening to all your videos to get me motivated! Happy Daylight savings!

Hi Gary Have you ever tried a flame weeder? You can get them at harbor freight for a few dollars. There is little concern of actually burning anything (deck) just waving the flame over the ice melts it rather quickly and you don't have to run hot water for 2 hours. Just a thought, I have used this many times up here on my side of the Mason-Dixon line, its fast and easy. I'm getting a serious itch to start growing something outdoors, I have micro greens running inside now and will start indoor transplants soon as well. Thanks again for sharing.

Make sure the hook a backflow preventer to that faucet. the garden hose can harbor millions of bacteria that can back feed into your drinking water system inside the house. code dictates that if a garden hose is connected to a house it needs a backflow installed at point of connection . Most hose bibs are equipped with it if not then there is a threat on device that you can install. a kitchen faucet does not come with one on the spout. If you have a hand sprayer it has a backflow in it. awesome idea just want to make sure everyone stay safe.

Cold water would work better, it takes less energy to get snow/ice to melting point. This is why you use cold water baths to thaw frozen meats or a whole turkey. Also, you could have shoveled 90% of that snow off the deck in a few minutes and melted the bottom layer of snow/ice with the hose. Thanks for the video!

I have tried this but wanted to add that folks might consider the global warming footprint of using your water heater as a snow melt, especially if you have an electric water heater. Also, don't hit your car with it - it can break the windshield glass from the heat shock, etc. And of course, you should assume the faucet is male/female from appearance without asking...
