Thanks! I was taught that same throw! Only using the two fingers and no thumb. It’s crazy the amount of hook it makes. It’s pretty much bowling out from over the left gutter, rolls out to the right, and hooks before nearing the right gutter. So much fun!
@karlfortuin57942 жыл бұрын
As a league bowler myself I dont.use my thumb & when I plant my ball usually down the 2nd & 3rd mark & yes my ball has a wicked hook & the only time I use my thumb is when.im working on my spares 🎳
@Cripplified2 жыл бұрын
I taught myself how to hook the ball, and I agree no thumb is the way to go. Only downside is when you want a straight throw, it feels awkward to use your thumb, and depending on your handedness, the 7 and top 10 pins can be very difficult to spare. I'm right handed and my strategy for the 10 pin is to start far left and do the lightest hook so it rides the right gutter. Honestly I'd prefer a 5 10 split or a 1 to 10 split than 10 solo.

How do you keep control of the weight of the ball wouldnt the weight of the ball put more pressure on ur fingers without using the thumb?
@G-gnome Жыл бұрын
@@PrinceTrexus if you’ve ever watched 2 handed bowlers, it’s a matter of using both hands and the releasing hand is always under. There’s a way to make a pendulum swing without having the hand underneath, it’s by cupping the ball from hand to bicep.

I’m in high school bowling and I started last year so I’m still new and just learning, all these helpful things make this so much more fun to try it out. Higher end balls hook/curve so much easier. I tried my uncles ball and it takes such little effort to make it hook/curve a lot. Crazy how fast I learned and got good at curving the ball in one night. Never tried curving because it looked difficult but I told myself to try and now I know how to. Got my score from 70-120 to 171. Curving is more consistent.

What adjustment should i make if the ball is hooking too much? I used to have a decent release but as of recent the ball gutters to left before it gets to the pins. I bowl without the thumb for comfort. Should i release later/earlier, angle myself differently, etc? Thanks!
@fishgutz42722 жыл бұрын
My wife, at 62, is taking her first lessons. One thing the coaches told her is that due to the arthritis, rather than starting with the hand under/ behind, start toward the side. This adjustment worked great for her. She is now curbing the ball more than she ever could before. The coaches are USBC cert too. Great way to learn or improve one's game.

it should be noted that if you have weak wrists holding the ball up in the "cupped" position during the throwing motion before release can be quite difficult and tiring. To remedy this problem get a a couple of dumb bells and practice wrist curls every couple of hours to start strengthening your wrists. It will take some time to develop that strength but in the end it will make it A LOT easier to spin the ball.
@stevejefferson39292 жыл бұрын
Good tip, I’m a carpenter, so I’m guessing my wrists aren’t too weak but I still found the “cupped” position really tiresome whilst trying to flick the wrist with a 13. Dumbell evenings it is 👍

Me and a mate basically just tried a technique we heard about maybe 15 or so years ago and that was it. Instead of bowling with 3 fingers like everyone does when they first go bowling, we just used middle and 4th finger, barely in the holes, literally just enough to curl it at the last second. Stand more to the left, bowl slightly towards the right and it curls left into the centre pins. I'm not saying either of us were great at bowling but it took all of about 5 minutes to learn this new technique and we both got over 100 each time. Went bowling 2 weeks ago for the first time in about 8 years, tried that technique and still got it

We bowl weekly and enjoy practicing the hook/curve mostly without using the thumb. Lighter balls hook sooner and speed is only affected by the amount of hook put on the ball combined with the weight of the ball. I.e. When I use my 16lb ball it roes slower and hooks toward the end whereas; my 9lb ball goes faster and hooks about half way. There's a lot of options to practice with. Every week is a new experience and we're HOOKED!! ;)

Good drill to reinforce the hand rotation at the bottom: get a mini-Nerf football, and throw underhand spirals, but without flaring your elbow away from your body. Also promotes releasing the thumb first, then lifting and releasing the fingers.

Totally changed my game.
