The point I really wanted to make during this video is to get your room temps under control before buying a chiller, yes your plants will most likely benefit from a chiller no matter how dialed in your room is but if your room is 85 degrees and you want to fix your hydro system with a chiller instead of fixing the room first then you may never see the full benefits of buying a chiller. Thanks for watching! Gary

In a stirponics/rdwc system is there any reason you can't use the same pump to recirculate the water around the system and the chiller. So essentially put the chiller in line with the buckets.

That's a very helpful video to learn more about a hydroponic nutrient chiller. I grew with DWC hydroponics in Minnesota indoors for 9 months of the year, because of the cold winters in Minnesota. But in the summertime, I grew outdoors for 3 months. I never had a problem with the nutrient temperature becoming too warm in Minnesota. I moved to Florida, where I can grow all year outdoors. The DWC hydroponics worked well outdoors from December through February, but when the ambient warmed up to 80 to 95 degrees in the summer months, the nutrient was 86 to 91 degrees. The DWC hydroponic plants weakened and died, probably due to the high nutrient temperature. I would prefer to do the hydroponic gardening outdoors in Florida, rather than setup an air conditioned grow room in the house. To give you an idea how the ambient temperature and sunshine effects a large body of water, I have a 15,000 gallon swimming pool. In the three winter months, December, January, and February, the water temperature was 68 degrees, and the summer months, the pool water is 83 to 88 degrees. It sounds like a nutrient chiller might be the solution for doing DWC hydroponics outdoors in Florida, in the summertime. The 1/4 hp model sounds like it might be the correct size for up to 80 gallons of nutrient. I'm not sure how much it would cost to run the chiller. If the chiller had to run 12 hours a day, it would probably consume about 150 KWH per month, which would cost about $20 a month.

When you are in a situation where zones temps are disparate and condensation is occurring, and the environment is passive .... modest insulation for the reservoir(s) is a good idea (likely before a chiller. This means that the reservoirs are heating up from the lights and air ... it is a thin BLACK PLASTIC element. Luckily for it doesn't move and there is plenty of room at the 15" lower level. A sheet of insulation board (like the "formular" pink sheets ... which has a reflective "foil face" side to it) is 4'x8' ... you can easily cut it 4x4 or 4x4x2 thick, then cut out bifricated brims for the tops for your buckets (its so thick that it can be cut into sliced brims for each bucket and sit there and be removable while plants are there) Then there is a "chill zone" 15" and lower for your tent. You should easily be able to see this area will be radically different in temperature ... think of how well a shower curtain works the next time you removed it after a shower and the bathroom is cold. Note that your tent inlets need to breathe, but the chillzone does not, so you want to vent pocket that a little bit, but since we aren't taping the insulation to the wall, not to worried, it has lots of leaks to pull air. If the chiller were laid out like in the video, a small partition between the reservoir and the chiller would be great. Just a sheet of cardboard to keep that passive hot air from being counter productive. I know "near is good" was stated, but if you can toss that chiller a bit away and use a foam insulation around the outbound tube that condensation is going to be removed. This is the same thing we would use in the northern states for hot water heater pipes so you don't have to run the water forever in the winter to heat up ... or what you would see on a air conditioning pipe ... its enough to make that temperature contrast some distance and not form condensation. This is all very common in laser chillers (welding and so forth) and so forth where you don't want your worker electrocuted or slipping.

I had a dehumidifier that I got on special for under $50. It malfunctioned due to a common issue of the coils icing over. I noticed how cold these coils were getting so I made it into a water chiller. It can cool down 3 x 50 gallon reservoirs at once and has been working great for years as a water chiller. This icing over issue turned out to be a substantial upgrade since those water chillers are way more expensive than dehumidifiers.

mini fridge $45, small coil of copper tuning $10, tubing and pump $30 = $85. Drill a hole in both SIDES, not top and hook it up. Keeps mine at 69 with the fridge on the 1 setting. 1 being the lest cool setting. $500 for this way, way over the top water chiller that cost more than the tent, buckets, your little DWC system, the lights , even seeds combined. This dude is high af. Im looking at this for salt water fish tank, and its still way over the top. (Still liked/subbed/notifyed) ;)

You can chill your RDWC to 68 deg for under $100. Buy a used water cooler, one that you would put a 5 gal jug in the top, for around $30. Then you need a device that monitors the water temp and turns the cooler on and off at what ever temp you set it at for about $50.

I know this is an older video, but might setting up the reservoir for a top off tank, and chiller simplify things for users? That way they wouldn’t need to be cutting into their res, and instead just they would just pull the plug off the correct fittings and attach the top off tank and float valve, or chiller and pump. As an added benefit for you, if customer’s ordered a system with a top off tank, or chiller, you wouldn’t need to customize one specific unit. Of course, I have no experience with these systems, so I’m just guessing here.

@bobseason4668
@bobseason4668 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you.. once you start passing 70 degrees you are at risk of pathogens.. Keep it in the mid to high 60's... water holds more oxygen at that temp.. going past 75 you really want to use small doses of bleach or peroxide.. bleach I only use for cloning aeroponically..

I noticed you mentioned Cannazym as an option to keep the water chiller and everything nice and clean and I grow in a similar system and I've read and been told that cannazym is a waste of money in a hydroponic grow because the product cannot survive in a salt based medium (I'm using General Hydroponic nutrients among other products) Can you explain which I should do because I do have a bottle of cannazym sitting in my closet from when I used to grow in coco and if I could use it and it will do something I'd love to use it. I have clearex which isn't the same at all but I do plan on running it once I upgrade my dwc setup to rdwc next week. Just to break down salt build up and whatnot.
@bobseason4668
@bobseason4668 3 жыл бұрын
cannazym is an enzyme.. It will do just fine in your setup and it will eat at your dead roots and recycle nutes back to your plant.. get yourself some food grade peroxide. (hydro store) 30% or higher... use about 2.5 to 3 ml per gallon and that will work like an enzyme and then sum. adds oxygen and sanitizes too.

I’ve got a dwc setup, not a rdwc, is there anyways to get a water chiller that can chill the individual buckets, or even a splitter for the water chiller?
@wileecoyote8661
@wileecoyote8661 8 ай бұрын
I’m thinking of doing the same thing with 5 gallon buckets. Look into stainless coils used in beer making. I’m thinking about running one coil in each bucket then back to the chiller. It would be a closed loop system so no nutrient goes through the chiller.

Was wondering if you could run a 1000 watt light in a 1’ extended gorilla grow tent with good aeration. I’m concerned if things will get a little hot or my buds will bleach.
@PAHydroponics
@PAHydroponics 4 жыл бұрын
I have customers running them in 5x5 with extensions and it works but I would say you should be in a good cool area for it to keep under control. If you keep temps right it will rock, and High power LED's can do more bleaching than this. Hope this helps! Gary

Hey Gary I’m running a portable Ac unit attached to a temp controller that’s going to cycle the tent or the surrounding area. Not sure if I want to put it in the tent or not because it has a dehumidifier attached to it. Where I’m at I need all the humidity I can get. Thanks again man!

Could you have just plumed the lines into the pump and then into the chiller without drilling the holes? What I’m saying is you all ready had a pump circulating in the hydro system why not just add the chiller to the existing circuit? I’m not an expert just wondering? Thanks for the info 👍🏻

The pump has a 3/4 out and doesn't have a 1 inch out on that pump, it does have a 1 inch input just not an output. G

Hello, when you first plant into it you will have to run the water up high so it touches your starter roots, the clay rocks dont wick up much so untill the roots are going down then after that the roots are down into the system you can run your water down lower, I would still keep it to about halfway up on these 8 inch netpots. Hope this helps. G

What size of you two buckets do you recommend 8 gal or the 13 gal for a 4 plant system in a 4x4 tent for max yeild ?
@PAHydroponics
@PAHydroponics 3 жыл бұрын
There is nothing mini about the 8 gal system. We are told frequently about how large peoples plants have grown in any of the different sized bucket systems. A four plant system in a tent with a little experience will outgrow your tent easily.

A quick question off topic, hope you don’t mind. The EC x 50= Ppm’s It’s kinda confusing, so is that the true value, even if you don’t know which chart there calculating from. The 500 or 700.

Hello, yup you can do that but they dont last long, I would use a 2 liter or gallon for that, the chiller is better so the plants have consistent water temps but you can get away with the bottle if need be. Thanks for watching! Gary

medhatgrower Sure, go ahead and use water that is too cold to grow plants in because it holds more oxygen. Why waste money super cooling your system when running at 19°C to 20°C pounds out huge crops? What’s to point of diminishing returns with regards to plants being stunted due to cold root zones?

Hot water will remove the kinks and make the hose very pliable. We receive a lot of bulk hose and will rework it through a steamer to remove kinks. We recommend doing the same when installing fittings. Hot water will do fine.
