Brilliant video and I think your daughter will be helping you next time! That’s a nice size bird in 8 weeks. My hubby made me a plucking machine last year for about £30 with a plastic water barrel, the rubber plucking fingers, a simple motor and a round metal plate.. it works fantastically well and a chicken is plucked in about 30 seconds. The plucking fingers were the most expensive part of it!

Great video very informative for those not in the know. I rear light sussex for eggs and meat but I dont have the patience for dry plucking so i dunk them in hot water and stick them in a plucking machine i got off ebay for £20. It came with a pair of crocodile clamps so you can run it off a car battery out on the croft

Thanks. Scalding definitely makes plucking a lot easier, I should invest in a plucking machine. A 12v machine sounds perfect for the job. 👍🏻

That has shocked me pal, never thought a bird would be table ready in 8 weeks, that is a great result. We had a coq au vin 2 weeks back as the cockerel had a pop at my wife one too many times.Scalding the bird makes plucking so much easier. Great work pal, and it was good that you showed virtually the whole process, it isn't pleasant but it's a whole lot better than what happens to shop bought birds. Top man.

It’s amazing how fast those Ross Cobb birds grow! If you don’t want extra large birds I’m sure you could harvest at 6 weeks and still get a large bird. Scalding before plucking is definitely the way to go. Did you enjoy the cockerel? Did he have much meat on him? And your right dispatching/processing a bird for the table isn’t pleasant but necessary if you want to eat meat. Thanks for your support 👍🏻

Was down the garden this morning and my cherry plum tree is in full blossom and it reminded of the vid of yours i commented on a while back and I realised you hadn't posted on here for a while. Hope all is well pal and you are gearing up for spring.

Everything is good thanks Paul, and my cherry plum is in bloom too! definitely a sign that the growing season is upon us. I’ll hopefully put a video out soon, with work the farm and family life I’m a bit stretched for time so KZbin has had to take a back seat but I’ll be back in front of the camera soon, there’s been lots happening down the farm!

I done 30 birds this year and average was 6lb and cost £5.50 a bird I put mine on grass as soon as I could to keep the costs down
@doingoutdoors875
@doingoutdoors875 11 ай бұрын
£5.50 is more like it. I fed mine chick crumb for too long because I thought I needed the higher protein content. Also not getting them out on grass early cost me. Lessons learned. 👍🏻

Hello joe, I’m ok thanks for asking. I’m still doing it all but been super busy with work commitments so the KZbin thing has had to take a back seat once again, hopefully have a video out soon. I’ve not heard much about the Bresse? I’ll look into them. I know that Cyril Bason has ceased trading which is where I got my meat birds from last year but I did get a letter from another company saying they could supply Ross Cobbs. I’ll be wanting some chicks early April.

My mother used to use a method involving a wooden structure crafted for it. (She'd put the head into a triangle-shaped hole and once it was in place at the very bottom of an edge, she'd pull the chicken up so the neck would break against it.) It seemed like it would be a bit easier in my opinion. Have you ever tried using something similar instead of your hands? Another method I hear about is using a gas chamber. Apparently, people are putting chickens in a room and slowly replacing the oxygen with nitrogen, so the chickens peacefully fall asleep and die instead.

I’m eating a chicken as I watch you dispatch one .. I felt kind of sad watching But if you are going to eat them you should be prepared to’ dispatch ‘ them. I want to grow my own bird so that I know what they have been fed. If you eat chicken you are essentially eating what they eat if you breed your own Then no pesticides. No antibiotics. No. Gmo corn. Just clean. Naturally fed Chicken …….😊. By the way. Not sure If you set up a Wormfarm, but I’d recommend it, as once you get it scaled up it will produce you unlimited, balanced food for the chickens and all natural and organic

No worm farm just yet but something I’d be interested in creating. And it is sad to see animals die but like you said, if you want to eat meat you should be prepared to dispatch these animals. 👍🏻
