For the curious. Humans have harvested bear meat since time began, both First Nations and non First Nations here in North America. Bears are in the pig family, meat is same as pork but more lean. Bears also reproduce like mice, never a shortage. Also take note, meat eating non hunters PAY OTHERS to kill, butcher and package their meat. Hunters do it themselves. Hunting is not a statement or a contest, it is a natural act used for sustenance.

Still a little early here in cold Manitoba for hunting bears but soon. Need the green grass to grow, that's the first thing they need to eat. Then the hunger pangs drive them. One of the big mistakes beginning bear hunters make is not during the hunt, its when it comes time to clean the meat. Many people are familiar with cleaning deer meat and bears arent much different until it comes to the fat. Make sure and get rid of every single piece of fat off the steaks, bear fat isnt like deer fat and a very small amount will spoil a pan of meat. Theres a reason they used to save all the bear fat and render it down for oil, its just different from deer fat and makes for a nasty taste in the pan. Im so picky I used paper towels to pluck every bit of it off I can before freezing.

Steve, thank you for sharing your bear hunting knowledge.I agree, I think that bear meat if prepared and cooked correctly taste a lot like pork. I also have to admit. that when I was in Korea as well as in Northern China, that I have eaten dog meat and that too can taste similar to some cuts of bear meat. I am sorry for all those that are offended or are going to get upset with me for eating dog but as they say, when in Rome, "do as the Romans do". I have been all over the world and to truly know and understand a people, I have tried to partake of the food of that country. Some good, some not so good, but at least I have tried to see for myself. Steve, stay safe out there, as always keep up the great work.
@claudiodominguez.4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that cultures are different and what's taboo in some is A okay in others. Also agree that to really get to know a different culture you need to "do as the Romans do". I also know that because of some cultures and their lack of common sense due to superstition, false beliefs and irrational thinking many animals are being hunted to extinction. These animals are unscientifically perceived to give the person that consumes certain parts of them an aphrodisiac effect. This same culture eats dogs commonly known as "Mans Best Friend". So knowing all of this I seriously question the true need to eat "Mans Best Friend". IMHO, everyone else is welcome to their own.

Bear and even feral boar(wild pig) doesn’t have the same amount of fat as an industrially fattened domestic pig. I highly recommend you at least try elk, deer or whatever local ungulate you have. it’s like a richer sirloin steak. Bears are omnivores and their diet can change really change the taste. if they are feeding on fruit recently they can be sweeter. If they are mostly eating fish, carrion or human trash, they can taste more like that.

Bears are not part of the pig family. Bears come from the Ursidae family, while pigs are part of the Suidae family. Both bears and pigs have the same infraclass, Theria, which includes all mammals the have placentas such as tigers and horses. Bears or the Ursidae family are close relatives of dogs, seals and skunks because they are all in the Carnivora order. The Ursidae family consists of five genera, including Ailuropoda, Helarctos, Tremarctos, Melursus and Ursus. The four species in the Ursus genus include American black bear, brown bear, polar bear and Asiatic black bear.

Why would anybody in a wheelchair want to go out there and shoot a pretty little bear that's been baited with donuts? I mean I'm sympathetic with you being in a wheelchair but I mean where's your brain and were your ethics removed whenever your legs gave out? You know what; it's probably cruel for me to say this, but I just can't resist: how about that we trained bear to pull a wheelchair and put some reins on the bear and teach you how to drive the wheelchair out into the woods and then we give you a gun and some bullets should you decide if you want to shoot that there bear then and there where you end up in the woods. And then we just leave you and the 🐻 to work this out? I mean it's actually a really good ethical chance for you to f****** get some ethics again. Far too many people are in hunting for entertainment. As if taking a life is somehow going to relieve your sense of desperation or bore dumb. I mean how many people have helped you if you're in a wheelchair.? I mean do they value your life or you somehow? How are you then valuing the bear? why should he sacrifice its life? just because you're in a wheelchair? I've never hunted anything for any of your reasons so I guess i just don't understand and I definitely don't want too.

Steve: How much did that 8' boar weigh, and do you personally have anything in Boone and Crockett?
@imabeliever2444 жыл бұрын
He said in a recent video that he's never weighed a bear but he's also talked about blacktail/moose scores so maybe he has a B&C log?

In Washington the meat is so greasy. Is that why heat makes them more active?
@sehingfrancis5424 жыл бұрын
A lot of hunters don't know about this because they aren't aren't farmers who have rendered Pigs... Which is the second grossest job to deal with for both PIG and BEAR. You got to go get all the lard out of the bear I'm not an expert at it I always saw it done a few times and hated watching it and hated smelling it so I never had the stomach to do it myself but a butcher can handle that process for a bunch of bucks. I can feld dress and do the skinning & handle the butcherin part but that's it . If you take it to the butcher after that and have the lard removed you will have tasty bear.

Optics, optics, optics! Quality glass is really important. Don't go cheap, one of those things where you get what you pay for. You see what Steve has around his neck. There is a reason!

Soap made with just a bit of rendered bear fat is NICE! No more than 10% or it will be too greasy

Steve: Thank you for your interesting and informative channel format. What size optics do you recommend for glassing all day long, 10 x 50's or greater?

Hey Steve, do bears ever die in their hibernation spots?
@unfairfight36254 жыл бұрын
Death usually happens before or after hibernation because of starvation,, bears hibernate because of lack of food not because of the cold, this is why they pack as much as possible fat during good months,,,den death is very rare, old, sick, injured, might cause it

Hailed as a classic, Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? explores the oddities and complexities of animal cognition-in crows, dolphins, parrots, sheep, wasps, bats, chimpanzees, and bonobos-to reveal how smart animals really are, and how we’ve underestimated their abilities for too long. Did you know that octopuses use coconut shells as tools, that elephants classify humans by gender and language, and that there is a young male chimpanzee at Kyoto University whose flash memory puts that of humans to shame? Fascinating, entertaining, and deeply informed, de Waal’s landmark work will convince you to rethink everything you thought you knew about animal-and human-intelligence.

Last year we saw 8 bears in a week. My buddy ended up taking one. Also saw a wolf and a cougar. Not too many deer and that figures right! Predator week.

Hey Steve, big fan. One thing I want to stress ... DON'T FUCKING STRESS. Nobody gives a flying FUCK about those that have the brain capacity of a GOTTDAMN GRAPE. I watch all your videos and I actually get stressed watching YOU get stressed. YOU, MY MAN are doing GODS work. I love what/and how you do your videos. We will never change the thoughts that are narrow-minded. All we can do is educate those who seek the knowledge. You, my friend, have made it very clear, what you know and what you DO NOT know. YOU ARE GENUINE. GODSPEED my friend, and happy hunting.
