Would a lighter or darker base color make a difference?

No the base color will not change this

Props to the camera person on those hard to get angles when Brian was demonstrating what to look for, i.e. matte vs. shiny, etc. Also, these instructions can be used for most films, yes?

Yes but this video is definitely geared towards the silver back films which can be a little tricky
