This is a great video, thank you so much. I have a Craftsman with the same transmission and did my fluid change today. A couple of points for interested readers: 1. The skid plate requires a 3/8" socket. 2. The fill plug is best removed with an 11/16" stubby wrench and there really isn't much room. 3. The Hydro-Gear manual says to remove the oil level check port plug prior to filling. It looks like it should unscrew with an allen key but I was not able to budge that thing at all. 4. I drained my oil, and had the tractor tipped a bit to the left to get all of it out (put your right side jackstand on a piece of 3/4" plywood is all it takes). I measured how much oil drained, and filled with that same amount, plus maybe 50mL to account for spillage. It really is a nuisance to fill because there is so little space. I ended up having to buy more tubing so I could hold the funnel above the wheel well.

Just did this job on my 2014 Craftsman G 5500 Tractor. A Few Things to know, After you pull the Filter and let the oil Drain out. Let the Tractor drop a same on the side you pulled the Rim, that will let more oil drain. Replace the Filter. Then remove the 1\2 inch plug on the side of the transmission, Then fill the Transmission from the vent plug and watch for the oil to start to flow from the side plug. Hydro-Gear has this Transmission holding 93-96 0z. Right at 3 Quarts. One more thing More sure your Tractor is Level when you refill the Transmission, Mine took almost the 3 Quarts.

Pristine tractor that is getting the manucured treatment. Meanwhile the Honda, to the side, looks like it's been jacked & left on stands... Ha Ha! Although, I don't have a garden tractor, I own a 08' Craftsman Pro "Yard Tractor", I really enjoyed the video. I think we can agree that the video shows you taking care of your mower & so long as you stick with it the unit will give many years of solid service.

Thanks for the video. Changed out the hydro fluid on my Husqvarna GT52XLS. Mine held 2 1/2 qts before reaching the bottom of the check port. Purged system and took off to mowing. Great help!!!

David Baird were you having issues with being able to go uphill? I just replaced the motion/drive belt and I can go forward ok on flat but the minute I hit a hill, no power from the trans. Also, do you know if you drive belt goes around the steering shaft (pull it to replace) or to one side. Conflict between what was installed vs what the manual shows. I got this tractor used, so I don’t know if it’s been changed before. Your help would be really appreciated!! Thanks!

David, thanks. Glad yours is working so well. That’s what I’d expect. Do you know if your motion belt goes around the steering shaft (have to pull it to replace) or to the side of it?

Thank you, for the first time I changed my transaxle oil, book said, I never had too. I still having problem with full power in reverse. There no power going backwards. But, I need to change oil and you show me where and fitting and how. Thank you !

The G700 service manual is on the Hydro Gear website. Has very clear instructions and also the purge procedure.
Wish my older Craftsman had a filter there. - Did you use spray silicone, or PAM, on the underside of the mowing deck after cleaning? It's that time. Doing oil change on the motor, and replacing tranny fluids this week.
@michaelcherr6 жыл бұрын
I have the same transmission. Did you need to purge the air? Purge procedure involves bypass valve. Mine doesn't work. I've been holding off on the oil change because I can't do purge procedure.

That is how mine is on my Cub Cadet GT 1554. Just take the filter off and it all dumps right out. Mine is also a Hydro-Gear transmission so there is a chance that it is the same one. Mine even has that shield over the filter. It collects a lot of dirt and grass clippings.

Is this a sealed hydrostatic transmission? I have a craftsman 2006 ys4500 with a "sealed" hydrostatic transmission that supposedly I am unable to be able to change the filter and fluid. Thank you for the video.

Excellent video. I have one I purchased new back in 2009 and have never changed the fluid yet. I only have 163 hours on it though. Do you still have yours? How many hours? How did you purge the air out of the system after refilling it with the 20w 50? Thank you for a great video.

Glenn Francis thanks for watching! Very nice you have low hours on it. I never purge the air out and works fine. I have 526 hours on it and still going

@@amtrobia Thank you so much for replying. What filter are you using when you change it? Brand does not matter to me I just want something I can order and will fit.

I can’t get my 2006 gt5000 to roll forwards or backwards even when I pull back neutral pin backwards. All controls move freely. With rear wheels & jacked up, the wheels go in opposite directions. Any help?
@kensommerville7 жыл бұрын
What did you use to remove the vent/fill plug? My setup is nearly identical with the same hydro-gear transaxle as you're showing, but I'll be darned if I can't get the plug removed.
@Glenn_1234 жыл бұрын
I know this was 3 years ago but in case anyone is still wondering. Remove the little rubber vent cap and then it is a 11/32" socket.

I have this same machine and it has been amazing. I have 400 hours on it and only very minor issues so far. So quick question, do you have a bagger attachment? I cannot find the product number for it anywhere. I ordered one, but the lower chute doesn't fit my deck..... Frustrating!
@amtrobia4 жыл бұрын
Eric R great to hear! No I don’t have a bagger. Sorry can’t help. I still have the tractor and it runs great

@@amtrobia Thanks for the reply buddy. I found the attachment via an online chat with a Sears parts rep and ordered it through them. They even price matched the price I found on Wallmart's website - even after telling me they wouldn't! I was like, come on man, I'd LOVE to give the business to Sears and you think during these times they'd be flexible! They were! :) Hope you're well and staying safe.

How much did you put in?

Hydro-Gear shows 92.9-96.3 ounces in a G730 which comes out to just shy of 3 quarts. Why did you only put 2 quarts in? What filter did you use?

Are all Craftsman equipped with "Hydro'Gear " Transmissions ? Why did you have to remove the mower deck ?
@gary00506 жыл бұрын
Ricky Hildebrand they didn't have too. They are idiots
@DayClanTribe4 жыл бұрын
@@gary0050 calling them idiots is pretty arrogant of you. they did a pretty nice job on the video although not perfect. They pulled the deck to service it. Take a hard look at yourself my friend.

Deck was clearly removed for servicing only an idiot would miss that.

Well you missed 2 things first that trans holds 3 litres of oil not 2 and 2 it has another plug that you pull out for the level I have the manual for the trans.

+amtrobia That's pretty interesting. I've never drained the oil from any Hydro-Gear and NOT had to purge the system of air. You got lucky on that one! ;)
@amtrobia8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Romanko I do it every 100hrs
@JohnDoe-gm5qr8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Romanko It looks like that may be the same transmission I have on my Cub Cadet GT 1554. All I have to do on that is fill it til it just starts to run out a bit. It helps to keep a few paper towels laying under the fill hole down on the ground to catch any excess oil, it can make a mess. The hardest part of filling that is getting to the fill hole. I find that taking the left rear tire off on mine makes it much easier to get to the fill hole. You may be able to do it without doing that but it is easy to take a tire off. I just make sure to keep it level by not raising it too much, I don't know if too much oil will damage these and I don't want to find out.
