Dr. Webster, I am a first year medical student in a very good institution and they have thrown a bunch of text at us to learn anatomy. I think I was having an anxiety attack before I found your channel. I have to demo my part of the dissection tomorrow and our first anatomy exam is friday. Hopefully it'll be ok with your help. Keep doing what you are doing and hopefully you recover from your illness (not the one you had when you made this video but the one you currently have).

Would there be much difference to the lumbar spinous processes, if you had abdominal wall defects? For instance, if you didn’t have any obliques at all, and just an abdominous rectus. Aren’t all those processes shaped by the tension put on them ? If those lumbar regions aren’t holding onto any muscle, would you have smooth areas instead of spinous areas?

Hi Sam, thanks for all your videos! They're great for shaking off holiday rust. If I may ask, what is the function of the long, angled thoracic spinous processes? Is it to prevent excessive bending, so as to avoid compressing the lungs?
@SamWebster5 жыл бұрын
The spinous processes' main roles are in muscle attachments, so I would guess that their varying lengths relate more to maintenance of posture and aiding movement rather than limiting it (compare to cervical spinous processes and consider the muscles that hold the head up, and the curvature of the cervical spine). The attachments of the ribs (or their costal cartilages) to the sternum limits compression of the lungs by the thoracic cage.
