Got excited when I found purslane growing among the pavers in my yard. Haven't seen any in about 6 or 7 years. Guess it finally rained enough. Scrambled egg with chorizo, onion and verdolaga (purslane) for breakfast.

We have it growing wild on our ranch in New Mexico. When it rains, we have an abundance. This year I could pick two bushel baskets in an hour. It was considered a poor mans salad. It does have a crunch and water content similar to ice berg lettuce.

Hi, I personally don't know anyone that cooks it at all. We either pop the leaves in our mouths and crunch away, or toss them and some chopped stems in loads of salads. If you chop it all up and add it to any soup, it will impart a bit of a gelatinous quality (not a lot), and help your soup be more of a stew. :)

Never saw it until it showed up as a weed in Central CA about 6 years ago. Now it grows everywhere on any bare patch in the lawn or garden. I'll try eating it. Research found it has long been eaten in the Mediterranean and Asia, though often more of necessity than preference. But, then lobster was once poor-people's food, and even shrimp when I grew up in coastal FL before refrigerated trucks opened a wider market.

I can't understand why you would cook such a vitamin enriched plant. It has great qualities better enjoyed raw. I understand it has medicinal properties as well. I'm trying to learn how to harvest it, right now my garden area is loaded with it and I feel that I should be gathering it. Does anyone know if a tincture can be made from this?

Got a question ....I have what looks to be purslane and picture this app says it's common purslane but I've notice they seem to have yellow flowers and mine are a hot pink color? Just trying to find out if the ones with those flower colors are the same as the yellow flowered ones.
@cityfoodiefarm2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about eating the one with pink flowers. I've only seen the yellow ones. I googled it and it does show there are ones with pink flowers. I would do more research before eating the one with pink flowers though.

If you have a LOCAL nursery that sells plants (not a retail nursery), take a stem to them. If you do not, you can call your local County Agriculture Department (every county should have one) and ask if they can direct you to the person who can identify plants; then ask if you can either make an appointment or if they would rather, you can drop it off in a baggy with your name & phone# so he/she can call you at their convenience. Good luck!
