Is there an online version of that manual? My house is exceedingly old, and has been band-aided to death by people who (apparently) didn't really know what they were doing. My house is old enough that the bathroom had to be added on to the back of the house. The way the shower got put together is almost frightening. 😱 I'm certainly going to have to visually identify possibly mismatched parts. EDIT: Nevermind... I went to the website and it practically IS the online book. 🤣 THANK YOU so much for the direction to look!

Great detective work here in identifying the manufacturer of the valve; superior approach. And the joy at getting the old seat out is something I can relate to. Though I haven't done it, I've read that doping the seat threads is a good idea.

You’re the man! Yeah, I got a question. How come you don’t just replace the washers if that’s possible. Also, how do you know if there’s a seat in there? I was thinking that you can always just pull those stem valves out and replace those. I have only done Moen stem valves before and I had no idea there was a seat in there or maybe there isn’t Any ways great job! Thank you.

You should turn them on without the sleeves to see if you need to tighten the stem packing. The ones I just installed were squirting water until I tightened (gently and no more than than you need to stop the water from coming out around the stem) the packing nut.

I wish I knew who you were in person so I could send you a picture of what I have going on here in a garage from the '50s with an added on mother-in-law suite as a second floor and they used God knows how many different name brands and products but I've ordered everything down to just wanting to replace the sleeves and knobs for a 12 spline hot and cold knob. Just aesthetic so I wasn't planning on redoing the brass but it does look like it's pretty old so should I just get a cheap set of chrome sleeves with knobs with the 12 point spline star and forget the brass or buy a kit that will work with a new faucet where you pull the plunger up for the shower to come on except on the side of the faucet there is a screw in for a hose line for a shower head so if I pull up on that knob with no hose line connected for a shower head it's just going to come out of the side of the faucet with nothing attached. But there's also the fact that you can put a normal shower head up and pull that plunger up and take a normal shower. My question is I guess tell me what kit I need to buy that's under $50 , Chrome or stainless steel, with new sleeves and knobs, 12 point knobs, already have a overflow and drain assembly I can use to replace that make it look new. Basically I'm trying to replace everything and keep the shower head that is a Moen brand and is new like it is just on a normal shower and then changing out the faucet and when you pull the plunger up on the new faucet there is a chance that the water is going to go out the side on that port you can screw in a hose for a shower head or it will have a part built inside of it that will block it off like a check valve and it will go directly up the pipe in the wall to the original shower head which has been changed out. Bottom line please just tell me what I can get on Amazon under 50 bucks not being a very experienced plumber but definitely no my way around enough to do the jobs. I'm trying to make it where I'll have a stationary shower head pointed directly at me around the chest neck area and then a separate shower head I can connect to the side of the faucet for the tub, and hang that on the new shower head hanger came with it. Connect that one with the hose to the side of the new faucet and screw it on tight, then use the part you would screw the other end of the hose on normally underneath the shower head holder, or the water would normally come out from the wall and put a Moen stationary 5-in or so shower head there so it will be like having to shower heads as long as there's a hanger for the shower head and that existing shower head that is new can screw on the bottom where the hose for the new shower head should be going but won't be because it will be plugged or screwed into the side of the faucet where the water comes out into the tub. Heck I don't care I have a Wi-Fi phone number so text me if you don't mind or call me if you would like anytime any day or night I'm always up but I am disabled and just trying to simply fix up the only place I have to live and making it nice looking new paint and new toothbrush holder, soap dish holder, hand towel holder, paper towel holder, 24-in towel holder all Moen and chrome. The overall length of the brass that is in the wall now for the tub for the hot and cold knobs after taking the sleeves off, are shorter and fatter looking I have the step down kit that came with the new shower knobs but the shower knobs were way too little for that shower even though they were 12 point and do work, they didn't send the sleeves so I'm going to order whatever you suggest or whatever I can find on Amazon. The diameter is the same on the hot and cold. 3/4-in brass with a half inch and then I think 3/8 step downs but the long brass piece that's thin with a 12-point star deal on the end looks just like what I have but the skinny brass part is much shorter than what is in this video. Anything you can suggest that I could look at would be great if I could give you my number somehow let me know I'll message you back on your comments and throw my number and name in a sub comment or something after you've replied and I can reply back. I'm not feeling well right now so things might not make sense but maybe there's just a generic kit that fits everything for 12 point that comes with the collars and knobs normal sized ones not for a RV or something. Thanks for your time

Try putting some vinegar in the screw hole of the handle. After that soaks in for a bit, start wiggling the handle while simultaneously pulling gently (you can use a channel lock (with jaws taped for non-scratching) for this).

everything seemed straightforward to me except for removing the valve seats -- the part where you are inserting the large square tool and removing those recessed components. Is this something that all shower valve stem replacement jobs will require? I was under the impression that if I simply remove the stem with the large cylindrical wrench, and then thread in a brand new stem, then the job will basically be done. is this incorrect?
@TxFireRescue81
@TxFireRescue81 9 ай бұрын
Technically yes. But you should inspect the valve stem seat for burs or deformities prior to installing the new stem. It was explained to me about 98% of plumbers leave the old seat in there if its good.

Ok so my bathroom is about 20 years old the other day I turned off the water and the water was still running! it's always dripped, but never like it was still on! so, my dad checked it out and said I needed to replace stems, cool! So he didn't find the stems exact match, they looked longer but they fit. He replace everything and everything is working amazing However now there's water dripping in the bedroom below the bathroom.😫 I looked at this video and others and what I've discovered is that he didn't replace the seats🤦🏾‍♀️ could this be why it's now leaking downstairs? Please help! my Dad is very stubborn, looks like I need to do this myself b4 I have a bigger problems.

Sorry none of this worked for me - I shoulda gotten to conclusions much sooner = buy the whole 2 or 3-handle shower bronze valve assembly with valve stems, trim, knobs etc. cut out the old, install new. I used copper to pex connectors for flexibility in fitting install in tight space. This, of course, is the $250 worth of parts fix instead of $40 in valve stems but it woulda saved me 3 days of parts hunting. BTW, AI visual recognition/ ID apps on iPhone (great idea if only) did not function at all. I also plowed through catalogues at Plumbing distributors and visited multiple plumbing stores with my old valves in hand.
