What an incredible painting! Honestly, Maine's IFW should use your arctic char painting instead of the current one for the fish ID on their website. This is by far the best one I have ever seen for the species

What a process, Phew!! I worked in an internationally known natural history museum, and I have to say your scientific illustration ranks right up there. But it's exhausting even to watch. So do tell, from start to finish, how many hours did it take? Congrats, way to go!

Chase that is amazing. The time, effort and dedication thrown in with a load of talent are what can bring a fish to life on paper using the Artist as it's catalist. Great work.

That’s dope chase!! I like the trick with using the paper towel. I’m ashamed I’ve never thought of that lol. A helpful tip for Timelapse I’ve found is shooting in aperature priority then removing the flicker in post. Love your guys videos. Cheers!

I remember reading (during the pond name reveal debates) somewhere in a thread that viewers don’t always watch the entire film. I was surprised by the number. I couldn’t look away watching this, once the drawing began. From the scales; oh man. To the anal fin detail and around all the fins to the tail; so impressively detailed. Anyway, I was glued to it the entire process and plan to share with some aspiring artists (including my mom who recently started sketching and is now dabbling in watercolor). I have an Arctic Char mount from a trip north of Great Bear Lake in Canada’s NWT and always wish the taxidermist had captured it’s beautiful details better. Bravo Chase. Beautiful work. You and Amy have many talents and I appreciate you sharing them with us.

Beautiful Chase! I’ve tried doing a trout with watercolor and though it turned out ok it is really inspiring to see how you went about the process. Especially the super fine details of the scales and the layers of colors to get the head right on point. I learned so much and I’m looking forward to seeing you do more illustrations in watercolor. I just tripped over your KZbin page looking for fly fishing videos and can’t believe my luck of finding a fly fisher like myself who also does watercolor of his catch! Super pumped!!

Incredible to observe the process through the artist’s eye. Obviously a labor of love and I will be sharing this to all my artist friends on IG/FB. Chase, do you sell your OGs? And/or accept commissions? It would certainly be a privilege to hang one of your originals on a wall with other masters’ works. Thank you for sharing. Agree with another poster’s sentiment that this was a great way to start Sunday!

Well done, Chase! I'm a professional artist and fly angler myself, but I could never make it though painting all those tiny scales (or hairs or blades of grass either, for that matter). Look me up if you're cruising the CA coast in the future, and I'll show you how to catch surf perch and stripers on our beaches. Tight loops 4eva.

That was absolutely fascinating Chase! As an amateur illustrator myself, I was really interested in watching your process. I use colored pencils, and primarily illustrate brook trout. I'm curious, do you actually count the scales on your reference and replicate that in your illustration? I'm looking forward to more like this...

Love your work and am learning so much from your videos. If I may ask? What is the program you use on your computer to help with getting proportions right? Thanks for sharing your work and your methods.
@TightLoops
@TightLoops Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I’m just using photoshop, with an overlay of a ruler I made from scratch (using the pen tool, and exterior grids for spacing reference). I then scale that ruler to fit my photograph. Getting good flat images of a fishes profile is key for this working. I then just move the ruler around in photoshop to get measurements, then transfer them to my real life ruler on the page. This is the best workflow for me being mobile with nothing but a laptop. If you had a printer at home you could print images, use grids etc to transfer proportions as well.

Thanks Chase for this. Like you, it is what I am looking for, when wanted to get into fish illustrations. I did start my first illustration attempt with a Windermere Arctic charr; using colour pencils (watercolours scary me abit) but work and my landscape drawings took over, so after seeing this, I must get back on it. I guess I am in the Paul Vecsei school at the mo. I look forward to the rest of the bts vids, especially the new mexico/red bands 😊 P.S: is it photoshop/light room for the digital rule?

I'd be so tempted to drawn the outline in a vector programme so that I could create a scale pattern to copy/paste and build up, then print onto the watercolour paper😬I suppose that's the problem with working in a digital would. However, there's just no substitute for watercolour and I'm really looking forward to the next video in this series. Nice work indeed.
