A fantastic comparison with animation that comics are giving the "illusion of movement". Animators study cinematography, but it helps artists study those theories too, of course. Actually, screenwriters like myself also study cinematography and implement that in our writing. Personally, I think it helps a lot to script first before jumping into the filming or drawing part. From there, an illustrator can decide where the movement is in the scene and start brainstorming shot types for frames. Looking at a blank page and putting random boxes is where I think a lot of novice webcomic artists go wrong. Start with the script first. It's like the pre-sketch phase for artists haha XD

Some very good tips and tricks in here, I need to try to get more conscious about word balloon placement. I've gotten MORE conscious of it, but I'm by no means an expert. Something I like doing in my comic is treating the page like storyboards: I'll often have 3-4 panels of the same size, and the "camera" stationary while showing the action unfold as if I'm "filming" actors. Once in a fight scene I did that while having the person struck by a weapon still falling in the next panel, across 4 panels, to show how little time had passed between the panels while simultaneously giving a "slow-mo" effect. I was really proud of it.

My nemesis is drawing complicated backgrounds, I always struggle with them. The idea of drawing a comic is so enticing, but the moment I sit down and realize "oh, I have to draw a laptop and that includes the keyboard" my body melts into a lazy puddle of procrastination lol

God, watching this video has me itching again to work on the comic for a Homestuck roleplay I'm in! It's something I promised my fellow rpers there I'd do, that if we actually manage to make it to the story's end of this iteration of the roleplay, I'll turn it into a comic and maybe even print off copies to send to folks! It'll be a very long while before we get there, but I have hope, and a deep love for the world we have and the folks all in it! If we do reach the end, before starting on the full comic, I'd do a scene or two from the last iteration of this rp for practice, to get down a style and better figure out how to do comics- been my plan even before seeing this! Even if we don't reach the end I may still do that for fun, because OUGH some of the events that happened... They deserve love shown to them for sure I know it'll be a BIG project, but it's a passion project I'd love to do someday even if I wouldn't go n anything but enjoyment and making the others happy, and GOD am I chomping at the bit to do it! At least until then, I have plenty of time to practice, learn, and get better with my art! (Also, at the very least, comic-ifying a roleplay removes the need to write the story and figure out the plot XD)

This actually helps me out a lot! I'm trying to work on a novel or two and had planned to have certain scenes/events drawn into one comic page (such as an important event that is a sort of main event of the story, if that makes any sense) But my issue has always been pacing the comic page and knowing how to add tension, so this video really cleared things up for my ADHD self lol Also, just a thing that I find helps me in comic making, storyboarding, and even story writing-is to write/sketch the main scenes, for example: Let's say we have 3 steps or panels, of course start with step 1; but sketch out or rough hand steps 2 and 3 before going through doing in between steps. I do this on scrap paper or when I'm in my storyboard phase as to not overwhelm me and I can change the in-betweens as I please before drawing/writing the final result; it adds breathing room for me! In less words, main frames first and in-between frames last when coming up with panel/writing ideas or executions. I say again that this is what helps me pace myself and it may not work for anyone or everyone, I figured that if it helped me-it could help someone else and save a lot of anxiety and frustration

I've been a small webcomic creator for the last ten years and have started to struggle getting my comics done on time and have been thinking about changing up my style to ease up on work time. I do a film strip style so basically each panel is the same size requiring lots of background work. I'm unsure if I have gradual become more complex in my work so it's taking longer or I'm getting older and no longer can work like I use to. Fun and timely video for me.

These videos seem cool, I've been making a few comics from time to time, nothing amazing, especially since I'm not a writter, and I'm not that good at drawing either, but I confess that sometimes I struggle planning short comics, like I have this very clear idea of a plot, and then I find out that I have to simplify it into something that is like a short single-page comic..... and the results are..... interesting... to say the least... Also I find hard to get feedback for them to be honest... I also don't know how to handle speech bubbles, those sound-effects texts, (I forgot the word for them, but I think you know what I mean) or even ways to sell the idea of movement. (And I'm not talking about super dynamic movement, like a punch in the face or something, could be something as simple as a character turning around.)

Something I’m curious about both as a general artist and as a comics artist, I hear a lot about how we should be experimenting with style and now we do things but I find it difficult to actually cultivate or learn how to prepare a proper experiment set up. Hey! Thank you so much for the tips, this was very insightful! I was looking for art advice towards comics, and I came across this video I started working on my comic (I'm only on the script part, so no drawings yet) and your tip about imagining the comic as some sort of drawn movie is really clever! My story is mostly based around characters interacting, (it's some sort of drama with psychological horror) so I've been struggling about all the panel placement and composition part, and I never found any good info on it, so this was a life-saver! I hope you do more videos like this one :)

Would you recommend this newer Lite over the Elite version? Cuz I saw the other video you guys did for tourbox, the price difference is huge tho ngl, so any advice from you will be great!
@Wingedcanvas
@Wingedcanvas 11 күн бұрын
Both have their advantages but if you're looking for something more affordable the lite is the perfect alternative. You don't feel like you're missing out; it's complete. The Elite version does have added benefits, but they're added benefits as opposed to making the Lite feel incomplete. It's hard to compare them both exactly because two different Instructors own them but that's what seems to stand out the most to me.

Ok, but like, the most important part, it really doesn't look leftie friendly? The buttons are all made with the right handed people in mind and it's already a hastle to put my computer on a 90° angle to my right for me to use the shortcuts on the keyboard and draw at the same time lol, for me this seems really unintuitive for lefties, seems good for anyone else though lol

Hello! I am someone who has just started digital art, and wants to make a career out of it! I have this great idea for a long-running comic series, and my preferred method of bringing my characters to life is by drawing them digitally. As mentioned though, I am still a beginner and not an expert when it comes to the fundamentals of art. I have been practicing drawing and watching lots of videos to educate myself, including yours! I do feel like I am slowly making progress with my art, but i still feel like there's this big gap of how my art is now, and how good I actually want it to be I am willing to be patient though. I know I won't become a pro artist overnight, but I would still like to take some type of action to speed up my progressive just a little. I was wondering if there are any cheap art courses or programs available that really goes in depth about anatomy, lighting and shadows, lineart, rendering, perspective, coloring, values and forms. As mentioned I've watched a lot of videos to try and help me understand, but I still feel like there's something that hasn't clicked for me in a way where i properly understand how and why these fundamentals work, and what you should do and shouldn't do in digital art. If there is any way you can reach out and some courses i can take for these things, then it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for reading this comment and still being a big help either way with the videos you provide! Thanks!

🤓 the 180° rule isnt so important in comics. Its a rule for cinematography. In comics, the reader has time to puzzle out the images.
@Wingedcanvas
@Wingedcanvas 11 күн бұрын
Absolutely, you make a great point! The 180° rule, a staple in cinematography, doesn't necessarily apply directly to comics. That said, while it's true that comics afford readers the luxury of time to decipher and absorb images, there's still value in understanding the principles of visual continuity, similar to those found in cinematography. Even though comics aren't bound by the strict rules of camera angles and perspective shifts, maintaining consistency in the visual flow can enhance readability and comprehension for the audience. Imagine a comic where characters suddenly switch positions or orientations between panels without any clear narrative reason. This could confuse readers and disrupt the flow of the story. While readers have more time to process each panel compared to frames in a film, maintaining a cohesive visual language still aids in storytelling clarity and immersion. So while the 180° rule may not be as rigidly applied in comics as it is in cinematography, principles of visual consistency and coherence still play an important role in creating an engaging and effective visual narrative.
