Hey, last week I was diagnosed with OCD, I suffer a lot with intrusive thoughts and am starting treatment for them in a couple weeks, seeing Nathan's painting made me feel seen and I really enjoyed watching the process. P.S. If you have intrusive thoughts and you're seeing this, you're not a bad person and they don't represent you. You'll be okay.
@swiftlymurmurs
@swiftlymurmurs 4 ай бұрын
Genuinely very helpful to imagine my intrusive thoughts as just a nasty little freak neuron that's getting its grubby little hands all over my thoughts. Like, that guy isn't representative of me, he's just a weird little shrimp getting into places he doesn't belong

I also love how often times the tactic that is given for intrusive thoughts is to just let it be and learn to live with them and that is really shown in the artwork and it’s process of just letting things be.

There's a lot of jokes at Julia's expense about how hard it is for her to draw characters without reference but the accuracy and life her referenced portraits have is really incredible. You can tell that's Daniel Craig even at the earliest stages. It's actually so hard to do this and she makes it look effortless

It’s cause they have different skilllz. You gotta admire all of their different abilities and areas of expertise. Julia is amazing at faces and drawing from reference. Nathan can whip out animals and characters from memory. Jacob makes characters come to life and Karina is Karina. It’s really cool and it’s what makes them such a great team.

I probably have commented this somewhere before, but I think a "digital pancake art" challenge could be fun. You kinda do all your layers in reverse order, covering up your details, lines, and shading with the flat colors at the end, then flip the layers and invert the order for the final reveal.
@dothedo3667
@dothedo3667 4 ай бұрын
I like this idea. Maybe more like painting on the inside of a window/glass, I'm sure there's a name for that sort of thing. Since pancake art involves the first part being darker than the later parts and there's an element of time to worry about.

Nathan's painting just GOT me. Holy shit that's an amazing image. This is such a good representation of what intrusive thoughts are like, I want to print this and hang it on my wall but every time I'd look at it I'd get anxiety, because it's too good at depicting anxiety. I'm so glad he decided on adding the depth as well, the whole thing is such simple shapes but SO effective.

I felt really validated seeing Nathan's piece, because I can barely draw/paint in my little free phone sketch app and while his level of skill is something I can't match I have in fact drawn that exact kind of vent-the-bad-thoughts piece with that exact color scheme and similarly spiky shapes. It felt like a professional version of what I do to get out of a bad emotional spot, and my sketch app version suddenly felt a lot more important. I'm glad I watch Drawfee so I got to have that experience. Also, because I love the Drawfee crew's art in general and it's really nice to see what great work everyone makes on challenges like this.

The like, vent-art, "automatic drawing" mindset, the monstrous nature of the piece and the heavy contrast in the colours he used in it all vibe with me. I just wanted to tell you that the moment Jacob started talking about his troubles, my painting table fell to literal pieces, which to me was honestly so beautiful and also a little profound, because y'all are always the reason I’m sitting down to make art. I want to make art, but I need drawfee playing in the background to feel better about it because I need a community I don’t have yet. What I’m trying to say is thank you and bless you for this ‘stupid’ and profoundly spiritual work you do.

Karina, when getting frustrated take a break and work on parts that you enjoy, and use mirrors and rulers when needed, also the pose may not feel right later but it’s ok to fix it. 20:51 4. Julia, how to render and paint human faces and see colors, and that the mouth is the 2nd most noticeable thing next to eyes when painting 29:01

On #4, I don't think it's just when painting. It's just how facial recognition works for our brains. You see someone's eyes, and then you see their mouth. Hair can be inconsistent, and people don't look at ears or nose or chin as much, so it's eyes and mouth that really capture a face. :)

that’s such a fun idea!! if it’s too difficult logistics-wise for Nathan and Karina, it could be just Jacob and Julia doing it since they live together

I think jacob gets a pass on his undo's, he did it on a sketch layer, and thats realistically something you can do because there's no paint on the canvas yet. Well not undo, but erase, and through erasing you can undo the last line. you get it.
@frankie9754

i agree that jacob should get a pass bc i love him but he TOTALLY undoes his paint layer in the early stages, there's a point where a giant splotch of blue appears and then disappears. but ur right, there are totally types of traditional art with an "undo" and that should be taken into account here!

Wow. Julia KILLED it. Amazing work by the others, too, but I could immediately see Leyendecker in that portrait early on, and it turned out so well for a challenging piece (glasses, no visible eyes, etc. ). I love the vibe of Jacob's, too, with the haunting eyes depicting the personality of someone who's just decided to step into the corpse identity of his brother, burn down his home, and start afresh as a fraud. I love Karina's Luce, and I LOVE the graphic and creepy automatic painting Nathan put out. You all did so well!

I loooove these!! I particularly like Nathan's because it feels more, like, personal than we often see from Drawfee, in a way? Not that the crew never gets personal/emotional with their art but idk, this one just hit different for some reason I can't quite put my finger on (plus it just looks so rad).

I can relate to Karina when she keeps going back to render the face because it's her joy when struggling with the rest of the body. You're cruising along doing a drawing, minding your own damn business and you get hit with a road block, and then another, and another and panic ensues. Every artist has a favorite part of the body they go to to find solace and then regroup to get over those road blocks. Hopefully you have and end result you like. In this case, the Drawfee crew never disappoints. Love yous guys!

Suggestion: four artists make ONE painting on one layer. The first person does the under drawing and blocks in the colors for the background. The second does the background details. The third does the foreground under drawing and blocks in the colors. The fourth does the foreground detail. Something like this is what I thought this episode was going to be. Lol

9:26 I know the “infantilizing Nathan” thing is both a real thing, but also the bit of “I really think Nathan has been improving, I’m so proud.” And like, not to perpetuate that or anything. I’m just saying, I REALLY love this Nathan piece and I think it’s one of my favorite renders/ digital paintings he’s done. I forget how good at rendering Nathan is, (especially with intricately large pieces like this) UNTIL I watch a speed draw and see the Timelapse. It’s so freaking cool!!

nathan- i love love love the shapes and strangeness. it really has a concept art feel like who are they where is place what do they do do they make sounds i want to see them move. i love making brain espresso with my bad thoughts and just pouring it out on a canvas to deal with emotions too. i think it was in highschool when i did an anxiety painting of watercolor bleeding trees and that held me over for another couple of weeks. jacob-you captured such a specific emotion like it feels crazed. the colors really make the situation feel extreme and the eyes are such a cherry on top . it adds such an unnerving quality karina-the way you render clothes and drape them on human form is so [chef's kiss] the fabric feels like it has dimensions and powering through all those ab adjustments only to cover most of it up is so real. also always love another luz drawing julia- your understanding of colors is insane. deciding to do a straight up face and color study when you cant retroactively change proportions or adjust tones without redoing the entire brushwork/blending???? are u crazy. it made me want to do more color studies aaa it's always so satisfying when things start to transition from "theres no way that's a color on someone's face" into everything clicking into place with color relativity ya'll killed it :D one my favorites things about drawfee is how different everyone's art style is and now differently you guys choose to tackle prompts ((also i'd love to see another songs into art episode!!))
