for this you need to be in a cool place and this applies not only to Russian pronunciation but also to Swedish, Norwegian, Irish, Finnish and Scottish, this appears because the vocal cords work in cool air and this means they lose less water (by the way, in some areas of central Africa you can also hear the same guttural voice in the foothills of Kilimanjaro where there is high humidity and moderate temperatures around 20°С

Very thorough! Thank you! By chance is the "ou" sound in english words like "mountain" or "fountain" pronounced different with a russian accent?
@RussianwithTamara3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I tried to keep it short and covered only most typical moments in this video. While consonants are quite obvious, vowels are somewhat tricky to explain. We don't have diphthongs in Russian, so "ou" like in "mountain" would sound like two separate sounds, when we pronounce "u" we protrude our lips.
@pitabreadboi82483 жыл бұрын

You missed the pronouncing of the English short "e" as the Russian "е" like in the word "help". "hyelp me!" And also pronouncing the English short "a" and broad "a" as the Russian "я" like in the word "has". "hyas"
@RussianwithTamara4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Well actually I didn't miss the first one, it's tip number 7, it's called palatalization. The second one as well. In Russian we only have one sound э, which is something between English [e] and [æ], so we do often palatalize consonants before these vowels. So "has" might sound like "hyes" (but not like hyas, that's wouldn't be typical Russian)

@@ame7165 Very possible! In fact when I had to teach one actor how to imitate Russian accent he had to unlearn first what he had learnt from TV 😂
@maxkho003 жыл бұрын
@@RussianwithTamara You did miss pronouncing English "e" as Russian "э" (e.g. help --> хэлп, has --> хэс), though, as it is a great alternative for palatalising every consonant, which is very difficult for native English speakers (especially for those whose accents don't feature palatalisation at all, such British English). Also, perhaps more importantly, you didn't mention the hushing sounds "sh", "j", /ʒ/, and "ch", the first 3 of which are pronounced "harder", i.e. with the tongue retracted, while "ch" is palatalised. P.s. The standard way of pronouncing "champion" in a Russian accent would actually be with reduced "ion" (so something closer to chyempien) and not like at 8:54.

Прикол в том, что их приходится не учить, а переучивать, потому что в основном они копируют акцент из американских фильмов, где русских играют американцы. 😂 Получается в итоге испорченный телефон.

I already had a pretty decent "Russian" accent. But this did help me get it a little better. I looked it up because I'm doing a skit later for a faction recruitment video in a game that takes place in a semi-fictional Soviet bloc nation during a zombie apocalypse. (DayZ is the game). I even cooked some Bryndzove halshusky tonight to feel more "Russian" though I can't get Bryndzové cheese here so I had to substitute with feta and yogurt.
