Honestly the easiest way to impress a German and to get him talk is to know Soccer very well in all aspects especially when it is related to the German Soccer League DBL..and then additionally if you are not in the Bavarian area just to hate FC Bayern München...then you will be loved for sure everywhere outside of Bavaria, you can bet your life on it..but when you are in the Bavarian area you obviously have to love FCB of course..and that will work at least by 8 stereotypical Germans out of 10. And I had to laugh my ass off when you at the end mentioned "northern pole, southern pole whatever what´s up there in the north"...C´mon don´t exaggerate..the names "Northern pole" and "Southern pole" are already self-explaining, aren´t they. And by the way we Austrians share a border with Croatia...and Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Rep., Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Slovenia and with the Germans...that are 9 countries although we have just a so small country...and 6 of them (unless Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany) were part of our lost Empire respectively Austrian crownlands...just to give you a historical geographical inside.

Very good advice. One important point to add: Be straightforward and don't be afraid to make take initiative when flirting, regardless of your gender, if flirting is what you want to do. We Germans are not so much about subtle hints and when in doubt we will often assume that a stranger who talks to us just wants to be friendly.

Some foreigner being able to speak German (my native tongue) isn't something that has a great impact at me; not anymore, I should add, this was very different 20 years ago. I'm impressed with anyone who is able to adapt to their surroundings in the shortest amount of time. Getting an idea of your surroundings and acting accordingly. Still being yourself, but in an unknown environment without causing offense. That's very impressive. And you don't even have to leave your native country to accomplish this, it can happen in your own society as well, e. g. whenever you are thrown in a layer of society you are not normally accustomed or related to. Being yourself and adapting and being brilliant at it ----- that's very impressive!

@@HayleyAlexis I once read somewhere that every language brings a specific way of thinking with it and that you have to adopt this way of thinking in order to speak the language correctly. I think you really slip into this "German mindset" when speaking because you really hit the right tone. I can even hear that slightly sarcastic undertone that many Germans have permanently. Hence this fascination: when I close my eyes while listening, I almost think I'm sitting opposite two people, when you change the language seamlessly. It's not creepy or anything, just fascinating. As a German I'd be impressed by American ppl. (esp. younger ones) who had more than just rudimentary knowledge of geography. Being able to point your finger on a map, indicating your current location is such a basic feat - it boggles my mind to hear that some ppl.. are not able to do this. I do consider a basic understanding of how the world map is built up to be a sign of respect for other folks of other countries as well as a thing of self respect, too. The struggle you have with Mike on this topic I know too well; my gf is not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to geography, only that her difficulties would even begin at telling left from right... - verbally plotting a way from A to B for her is a very adventurous thing ;-)

What impressed me most was the fact that you were very open and curious about our culture., and occasionally also mercilessly honest when it came to holding the mirror in front of us Germans. You ask what I would prefer, someone trustworthy, or someone who understands my sense of humor. Since I am not a perfect person myself and occasionally shoot past my target, I prefer a person who tells me his honest opinion in the face than someone who laughs with me at inappropriate or bad jokes.

From my experience, this is all true, and you just have to be yourself. My German friends have told me that they like how honest and transparent I am with my emotions, since a lot of people tend to “be fake” in America. But I also have had numerous people tell me that I apologize way too much 😅 even when it’s not my fault, and my friend says, “why are you sorry? How to impress a German ... Well, I actually don't care if someone speaks German or not because more often than not it seems easier for me to switch to English instead. If someone said "Hallöchen", I'd laugh though, that's so cute. Aside from that, this video is pretty accurate, really well done! Out of that, my top 3 reccomendations would be: 1) Have something to talk about. Be interesting and if you can't, just smile at someone (as a form of greeting) and let it go. Staying silent is an option. Sometimes literally, seriously, don't be loud, a lot of Germans dislike that. ESPECIALLY on sundays and after 10 p. m. It is considered _very_ rude. If you want to tell jokes, I sometimes feel like a lot of men like jokes about the french military like "Not even Actimel can activate France's defences". Or "Why are there so many rivers in France? Because water will always take the path of least resistance." Ask them first if they like these kind of jokes though. Germans can even post some of their favourite jokes below that comment, just to help out. Also please remember: Germans are slow with developing friendship because a lot of Germans tend to be very loyal friends. This is why it usually takes a while. It doesn't mean they don't like you, it just means you're maybe getting there, depending on the chemistry. Germans are more honest, instead of faking emotions they don't have, they just take their time. Down to earth. 2) Be yourself. A lot of Germans do NOT like phony, boasty, overly girly or dramatical behaviour. Just behave natural. It's who you are and this is what most Germans care for - a human with flaws. To attitudinize might be _real_ dealbreaker for some as well. 3) Be polite and respectful. Always leaves a positive impression when people behave well (I feel like a lot of Germans care for good manners when meeting someone for the first time - and down-to-earth-behavior). Be genuine though.

Jokes about the Frensh? Where have you been in Germany? That's completely new to me. However, I've read about an university that wanted to find out which country is the most funny. So they asked people from various countries to send their best jokes and put them on a website for people to vote for the best jokes. Germans laughed about the most jokes. But that doesn't mean Germans are funny people, they are just easy to amuse. Telling jokes can be quiet boring. It has to be a very good joke. Telling a real life funny story is something different.

My husband, who is a German Rocket Scientist who worked for NASA and other space agencies and companies, just kept on asking me out. I am from Miami and my parents are Cuban/ Ecuadorian. I lived in several countries including Ecuador, and Holland. I speak three languages and tricultural. I had to tell him that I was not interested in the German language though I know their history and art. I married him because he was so different from the other Germans I had met and he loved Latino culture. We moved to Switzerland and visited his family a lot. I learn languages really fast and Spanish vowels sound a lot alike. I learned the language easily. I guess his family understood I was different when they heard I was from Miami and I was training to be an Ambassador or Minister of culture for Ecuador. I always ask my husband why we, Americans, need to know so much European history when they know nothing of South American culture. They can’t even tell you the difference between Incans, Aztecs and Mayans. In the end I understood that they have the amazing habit of lumping in all Americans together even though cities such as Miami, New York, Los Angeles( where I lived) has thousands of culturally diverse families who speak other natives tongues as home. His family always amazes me by their lack of insight on how diverse the US is.

A (German-speaking) comedian once quipped that while both men and women list a ‘sense of humour’ as an important attribute they look for in a partner, men understood this to mean that their female partner laughs at their jokes and women saw this as their partner making them laugh. I wonder whether that is just applying gender stereotypes or if their is some truth to this.

Understanding a joke in another language is already a challenge. Unless you have very good language skills and know the culture too, it is best not to try to tell a joke. I have been to the USA between 15-20 times on holiday trips, so I have had some exposure to the US culture. Based on that, I would suggest for Americans to avoid geography and history, because the average European will be much better educated on these topics, so don't make a fool of yourself. I am Belgian, not German, but the tips you gave are probably also applicable for most other (West) European countries. We are also mostly annoyed about this elevator chatter (at work I ride the elevator in complete silence almost every day), be silent unless you have really something useful to say.

I don't really care if anyone speaks German or not. As long as we both speak English it should be fine. That elevator story though... I can definitely relate 😂 I was grocery shopping just a few hours ago and there was this woman that told the cashier all kinds of things like why she needed a certain product, or why she stopped buying another one. Then she turned around, looked at me and told me how she thinks medical gloves are overpriced. The cashier and I just gave each other a look and smiled at each other. This happens a lot. It's a way to show the other person "I'm not weird, I think it's annoying too." 😂 This might seem crazy to other people and I know that it's not uncommon to start random conversations with strangers in some cultures, but growing up in Germany that definitely irritates me.

I really doubt if there is such a thing as the ultimate way to impress a German. So I can only speak for myself, and in combination with about 80 million other answers the picture may become complete. I am impressed when people have a dream and strive hard to achieve it. When they fight for freedom and risk their lives on the streets. When a single mother raises her children and successfully keeps them away from the drugs and crime in the neighborhood. When someone tries to remain human in a barbaric world. And it even impresses me when someone doesn't try to impress others. And last but not least, it also impresses me when people take the risk to leave their homeland, expose themselves to a different language, culture and geography (:-))and effectively run a youtube channel with relevant and interesting content.

I made a brief trip to Germany, and in preparation, studied a German phrasebook beforehand. I already knew the phrases, ,,Danke," and ,,Danke schön." In the course of my brief study, I learned the phrase, ,,Vielen dank," and bore it in mind to express my gratitude every time I received assistance from anyone in Germany. It was my phrase of choice. Do you think I impressed anyone with this?

I think that geography is a thing for most Europeans. Germans love to travel and they are known to be one of the most respectful tourists. In exchange they expect people coming to Germany to at least be aware where they are on the map. No offence though, just saying it generally.

That's very true, Germans get impressed when foreigners know about them, their language, show respect, work and are reliable and really know things in general. May it be geographically or anything else we consider common knowledge, put substance behind what you say! I really like your new video and I am so impressed that you won the fight with your waving hair. And if I wouldn't have a big disgust for people who are know-it-alls, which Germans are also famous for, I would actually paste more comments. Well, to me, it´s usually not the clothes, that reveal someone to be from the U.S. (except - of course - the basecaps) but the overly expressive mimic and gesture and the loudness. And not neccessarily in a negative way, for it´s quite entertaining, but only in certain doses. ;) I´d say, your list is very accurate. Most points are things, Germans expect from other Germans and value very high, when non-Germans do it. An additional point is efficiency vs. effort. While most Americans seem to value effort, Germans prefer the exact opposite: Finding ways to get the result witht as little effort as possible. But beware: That doesn´t mean just half hearted surface work (like it´s called "the American way" in a Simpsons-episode). The quality standards should remain high. It´s not primarly about laziness (as it may appear to Americans), but about good planning. And planning is a very relevant point. Although we usually are impressed by the U.S.-improvizing talent and envy you for it, we usually see it as too risky and unpredictable to realistically think, we could do it ourselves. You are the McGyvers of the world. We´re rather the Hannibal Smiths: "We love it, when a plan comes together.". What leads to my last addition: Being late because of an overcrowded calender or a constantly ringing cellphone may - in some parts of the world - let a person appear "important". Not here. Here it just means, that that person is unorganied.

I have to agree with the whole geography thing. I knew where European countries that weren't part of the USSR was, but the countries that were part of USSR I had no clue where they were. Asia and Africa I really don't have a clue where things are. I learned geography before the Soviet Union collapsed (yes I'm that old), and I didn't learn about the world again. This was before everyone had a computer or internet in their home. My teacher would say that's USSR and that's it. When I took my first German course we had a lot of people from Russia (I did know where Russia was), Belarus, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Armenia, etc. Yeah I got schooled on where the countries were.

I am German (m). I can only speak for myself and the male friends I have, obviously. At first looks, taking the picture from above, Hayley is highly attractive to us. Her sportive- elegant way of dressing herself is a first eye catcher. Nothing over done. The same applies to face make up. We see it as most beautiful if you scarcely notice it. A little bit of touch up here and there, maybe. A no go for us are overly long claws ( sorry ) as finger nails. Again, Hayley´s fingers as our beauty standard. ( Yes, I know that she is taken XD ). Hayley already mentioned general knowledge as a very important point. Some geography, history of the world. Some knowledge about technology, also at least to know how our solar system is set up. There is nothing more embarrassing than when a friend tells you : " Your new acquaintance was beautiful until she opened her mouth and said something. " It also includes using foul language, that really turns down. ( F.. words and the sort ). When it comes to making acquaintances, there is some difference in geographic location. It is generally said that we in the northern part of Germany are a bit cooler. There is this joke about Ostfriesland, the coastal region in the Northwest of Germany : 2 friends meet at 04:00 AM to go fishing. After an hour of sitting and waiting, one of them says : " Ja, ja " An hour later, the other responds, slightly annoyed, with : " You old chatterbox ! ". I don´t know about Bavaria, but it is noticeable that in the Cologne / Düsseldorf region people are a bit more open. On the other hand, it is said that contacts are more superficial in the Cologne area, whereas once you make friends in the North, it is more solid, reliable. As to jokes, there seems to be quite a difference to the USA. But then, every culture has it´s own sense of humour. The typical British humour also stands out, and is well taken in Germany. What is absolutely not acceptable in Germany is playing with food. Like when a cake is thrown into somebody´s face. I have never witnessed a German laugh at the sight, it rather makes us cringe.

It just may not always be compatible with other peoples'. Also, so much in humour depends on language and culture. ok maybe my question sounds funny to you….. but *how can I left a permanent impression **_in a good way_** in the heart of an American?* I'll try to tell you my story why I have ask you this: once upon a time I met a man named Freddy. Freddy was a singer at the US Army Europe Band. He is brilliant in what he is doing! He's a great singer. I had the honor, to meet him after the show and I was so exited, that I asked him if we could take a picture. He seamed happy about it too and wanted also takin' a picture of us. around two weeks after this, a friend of mine told me that Freddy shared his picture of us in Facebook and told our story. So I thought, I'd have a new friend and I was happy about it. at first me and Freddy became friends on Insta & FB. but some day he turned his back on me - out of the blue….. :'( I mean, I know that Americans can be sometimes friendly, without a deeper meaning behind it. but after Freddy shared our Story, I really thought, we would be friends. but for him it had no deeper meaning, as I could see. *PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG* but for me as a German, it's sometimes hard to see, what is just the "small-talk kindness" and when is an American really impressed.
