In the US, there is an organization called "Meetup" that lists group meetings for different interests, including language discussion groups. I'm in four French discussion groups, and I've noticed the improved fluency of people who regularly attend the same groups with me. Once you get the hang of speaking, language learning becomes vocabulary building and learning nuances of expression. Supplementing participation in these groups with with trips to France and Quebec is *le cerise sur le gateaux* (cherry on the cake).🙂

Yes those kinds of situations can really help. I wasn't aware there is an organization like this in the States. Thanks for the tip.

Very good video Maaike. Ah, the trap of trying too hard to phrase too long sentences.... Most of the time keeping it short and simple works better. Interacting with people and trying and making mistakes is the way to improve your skills. I think here in the Netherlands we are luckily enough to have at least two years of foreign languages tought in school. And being exposed to shows and movies being broadcast in the original language with subtitles is another benefit we have compared to some of our neighboring countries. I like both your English and Dutch voices but would not have guessed your Dutch accent by just hearing your speak English. I agree that a thank you, please and politeness will open a lot of opportunities to have a conversation in a language that you are not fluent in. Funny that you mentioned the different cheeks as I was trying to figure out what was off.

Sorry but that would be a breech of contract with my employer. I have a non-compete clause in my contract.

Merci Maaike. Je suis une Américaine qui apprend le français. I recommend the application Tandem for language exchange. Especially if, like me, there are no Meetup groups locally.

Also I will say this in French so that the masses won't lambaste me in the comments. Eddie Izzard a fait la transition. Elle s'appelle Suzy.

What would be your advice for increasing fluency in a technical field, like one of the sciences? Thanks Maaike!❤

Do you mean fluency or proficiency? Proficiency (= building vocabulary) which requires different strategies than just being able to speak. So it depends on your goal.
