How to Improve Video Quality in Final Cut Pro

Look, you’re not a bad editor and I’ll show you how you can improve your video quality in Final Cut Pro. I’ve been there before. Someone gives me some low quality video or more likely I shot some bad video and now I have to fix it. But you and I, we’re not bad video editors. We got this!
In this video I’ll show you how to jump your video quality up a level and fix problems like blurry, overexposed or grainy footage. You’ll walk away with high end video quality that looks and feels professional.
If you’re just starting out, I’ll show a trick for crisp video playback and if you’re an expert, I’ll show an advanced luma trick. Stick around till the end for a blurry video fix I’ve only seen in one other place.

Hello! I found this video extremely helpful! Here you say we should go from “fit” to “none” on the spatial conform tab, then reduce the image to 50% to fit it again on the 1080 timeline and then zoom to the desired reframing in order not to lose any pixels or resolution. Nevertheless, on one of your previous videos you said that we can safely zoom to 200% a 4K clip on a 1080 timeline. So, my question is: which of these two methods is technically correct? Thank you in advance!

I don't know which is technically correct but I suggest using the first method. I like to set my media to the original dimensions before I start zooming in. That way I make sure I'm working with uncompressed footage.

you dont need to disable "fit" conform to zoom in on 4K footage in a 1080p project. Just zoom in on the footage thats it.

My canon R6ii video was 8gb but then when I export using it's source format, the file size is 3.3 gb and has worse quality than the original

Hmmm. Sounds like it was compressed too much. What settings did you use?

@@StupidRaisins the video was originally 4k 24ps and it's mp4 format. On my mac it also says the codec is h.624. The export settings that I used were, Format: Computer Video Codec: H.264 Better Quality Resolution: 3840 x 2160 Color Space: Standard - Rec. 709 Regardless of what option i choose, the file size is never the same or even close.

When you export the dark areas of your video clips get compressed and you may see some artifacts or pixelation.

@@StupidRaisins Yes, but how do you fix this? I changed the export to pro res 422, which was a much larger file (literally went from 800MB to 32GB), and that solved the issues. However, now I have a 32GB file which is huge and not ideal for submission and transfers...

Yeah you fix it by compressing it less like you did with Pro Res 422. Test out different export settings to find a balance between size and compression. Try Format at Computer and Codec at Better Quality. You can also try bringing up your shadow levels so they aren't so dark.

Yes a good microphone will improve your videos quality. I use the Blue Snowball and Rode Wireless Mic Go but sometimes I forget to turn them on. Forehead slap!
